Chapter 229: Love The Scent

The flying attackers that had found their way into the city’s defences were being quickly eliminated, so Kalli didn’t linger long, only remaining in the air over her hall of heroes until there were two runners waiting for supplies.

Then, she returned and let the others take care of it.

The flight suits were back within the city limits, fighting off the bugs with the heroes on the rooftops, and that should be more than enough heavy firepower for a small group of bugs.

Most were still being kept well away from the city walls by the cannons, and this wave appeared to be smaller than the one that had come before it.

Before the insects had stretched for the full fifty kilometres. This time, they had started ten kilometres away, and their numbers appeared to be much lower. It was still dark outside, and they could see the back lines of the attacking wave.

Kalli took that as a good sign.

{Achievement Earned} [I Love The Scent of Napalm In The Morning] produce and use one thousand litres of flamethrower fuel.

{Reward} [Ghostflame Flamethrower] upgrade available in store.

Kalli smiled as she read the description.

{Ghostflame Flamethrower} 30-metre range. 30 mana per minute consumption. Deals 20 damage per second as fire, stacking up to 5 times with prolonged contact.

That mana cost was prohibitively high, but the damage was incredible. With the range that it had, it could light up a whole section of the wall, and the damage would stack. That should keep the bugs from climbing even more effectively than their existing flamethrowers.

And, they were only 5 points at Rare Grade? What a wonderful deal.

Kalli sent out a whole shipment of them to the walls, along with the reloads. They could have the mages use the new flamethrowers, which had a much more compact backpack, as it was fuelled with magic.

Though, when she inspected it, the tank appeared to be filled with some sort of gel, and putting mana into the tank caused more gel to form.

So, perhaps it was liquid fuelled, with a mana-based creation system?

That was cool.

Kalli kept one for herself, and mounted it to the left forearm of her flight suit. That way, she could keep using her Pulse Cannon while it was active, and then switch to Ghostflame when there were large groups of enemies at short range.

A well-balanced combat suit.

"{ Bring the Flight Suit teams into the Hall of Heroes. I have a weapons upgrade for you. }" Kalli called over the radio, knowing that it would give a bit of encouragement to the rest of the heroes.

The suits landed in the front entry, and Kalli ran over to equip them with the flamethrowers.

"Hard mount the nozzle over your left forearm. That’s what I did, and I think it will work amazingly, while being out of the way. You’ll need the Pulse Cannon most of the time, but having fire for when the bugs get close will make any hero smile."

"I worry about you," Ivan replied.

"Don’t tell me that you don’t get a little excited when you set the insects on fire."

The blank face of the suit simply stared at her, but Kalli could tell that the Rogue was making his "See, this is what I’m talking about" face.

The other members were more enthusiastic about the new flamers as they were attached to the suits, and Kalli smiled as they took off again, hunting for intruders to the city. The area was mostly cleared, but they wouldn’t take any chances when the enemy was that deadly.

However, when they decided it was enough and made their first 300 kilometre an hour low pass over the wall to light up the front lines of the bugs, Ivan could no longer deny the smile that had crept onto his face.

That wall of flame, dropping onto the bugs like a water bomber in reverse, was absolutely glorious.

The tiny insects were nearly all gone now, annihilated by the defenders of Marimgar.

But that left behind the lines of ten metre tall improved warriors, the ones that fired spikes, and the superfast ones with four sharp forelimbs that could run on their hind legs in a bipedal manner to attack larger targets.

Ivan muttered to himself as he continued to pick his targets. "What in the seven hells were those things designed to attack? Dinosaurs? Look at it, that Ripper creature is designed to fight in a bipedal stance, but that makes it ten metres tall. What sort of predator is large enough that they need to be that large?"

He didn’t have his radio activated, so nobody answered, but the whole team was thinking the same thing.

Even an armoured personnel carrier was dwarfed by these things.

So, there was no doubt that they were supposed to fight something their own size. Perhaps the Giants? These insectoids would be a great opponent for the Titan Clans.

Unfortunately for the attackers, their size made them entirely too easy to target with Pulse Cannons, and even a ten-metre tall armoured insect was no match for a few seconds worth of concentrated energy weapons fire.

Kalli slowly turned and silently tapped the buttons on the bubble tea machine. As her drink poured she did not say anything, nor turn around for the runners at the counter.

But they also didn’t dare to interrupt her.

Only once she had violently stabbed a straw into the cup did she look up at the screens to see what they were facing now.

"You’ve got to be kidding me."

The runners all turned to stare at the screens.

The insectoid warriors were retreating, having clearly seen the same message that they had. Unlike most of the crazed monsters, the insects had enough cognizance left to know that they had lost and there was nothing to be gained by continuing.

So, they were retreating, and stomping right through a horde of Goblins, Hobgoblins and Flatfoot Hunters to do it.

"Seriously? Aren’t those things all under level three? Maybe level four at most for the Hobgoblins?" One of the runners asked.

Kalli nodded slowly.

"Unless the System did something to them, yes. There also aren’t more than twenty thousand of them. That’s not enough of them for the armies to even stack up completion quests.

I will send the scouts out to check the horizon. They might have some advanced troops, and more where we can’t see them from the city."
