Chapter 1897: Sharron Shoults
The president stepped aside, allowing the heroes to see the blue syringe up close. A suppression field was active in the room, so no one could do anything there even if they wanted to.
They could only watch the syringe with much anticipation, for it was something that could directly help them, unlike the other two things before.
“Does anyone want to test it?” the president asked.
A few hands raised immediately.
The president looked through them all and pointed to a werewolf.
“Why don’t you come up here, Sir Gravitas? You shall be our subject for today’s demonstration,” the president said.
The hero Ning didn’t recognize from any rankings stepped forward. He was a werewolf in a green and black costume with a visor covering his eyes. He stepped before them all and gave a curt nod before introducing himself as the hero Gravitas from Moira City.
“My power is telekinesis,” Gravitas said. “I can lift around two people at the same time, or about 350 pounds total. May I?”
The suppression field was gone.
He lifted his hands to the side, his powers wrapping around two heroes. When the heroes gave a nod, Gravitas lifted them off the ground, clearly straining as the two heroes were his limit.
“You two weigh more than what I safely lift each time,” he explained, before turning to the president to continue.
“That’s good. It’s nice to have a base metric,” she said, gesturing for the people behind her to approach.
One of the scientists approached with the syringe and administered the injection. Gravitas rolled his shoulder, waiting for the effect to kick in.
After a few seconds, his eyes widened. He stepped back, watching his own body with disbelief.
“This power. It’s… it’s so strong.”
“How many can you lift this time around?” the president asked.
Without saying anything, he raised his hand to the side and lifted the previous two heroes with little effort this time. He was clearly not straining, and he could go for more.
His other hand reached to the side, reaching for another person. He easily lifted that hero as well. The werewolf himself was surprised at the fact that he hadn’t reached the very peak of his limits yet.
“I can feel it,” Gravitas said, his voice amazed. “My powers have become stronger. I can lift more than three people now. Maybe 500 pounds in total. It’s over a 50% increase, at least.”
The other heroes watched with growing curiosity. Ning could see the shift in their expressions as well. Excitement, interest, and greed filled their faces. The only one whose face showed no sign of changing was Godhood.
Everyone but him was already forgetting the atrocities that must have been committed to bring this syringe to life. How many prisoners must’ve been experimented on. What sort of side effects they must’ve suffered.
Ning didn’t feel particularly bad for people who were evil to begin with. But the justice system was hardly accurate all the time. Not every person who was given the death sentence deserved it.
Sometimes people slipped through the cracks. He hated the thought of those people having to give away their bodies to these experiments. It wasn’t like these scientists were going to take precautions either.
The scientists put away the syringes on the president’s command and left the room.
“This is our best creation yet when it comes to a hero. It could be deployed in emergency situations where heroes need an edge. It’s still in the experimental phase. We’ve mostly isolated any issues and gotten rid of them, and we’re trying to improve the effectiveness still, but the results are promising. So I wanted to ask: if this were to be sold, how much would you pay for a single syringe?”
The heroes looked at each other, all seemingly waiting for someone else to speak.
“A good five figures,” Bloodborn said. “I would hope I could purchase it with just four figures, but even if it is five figures, I would purchase it.”
The other heroes nodded, accepting the number as something they would agree with as well. The president smiled upon listening to them all.
“Would you like to hear how much we actually plan on selling them for when they are mass-produced?”
Everyone paused, waiting for the president to speak.
She raised three fingers.
“Three thousand Jorans?” one of them asked with a hint of awe in his voice. “That’s cheaper than we thought.”
“No,” the president said. “Three hundred Jorans. It will be no more expensive than a fancy meal at a restaurant. That is, if we get to mass-produce it as we’ve planned.”
“What’s the hurdle?” someone asked.
The president didn’t answer immediately. “I’ll explain that soon enough. It’s better if we wait until I show you our last and final product. Please follow me.”
The president took the heroes to another room.
This room was larger, with more equipment and a full team of scientists waiting. If the other rooms were just extra space that was used for today’s showcase, then this was the main working station, and they had just arrived at the heart of the research facility.
At the front of the scientists stood a woman in her early thirties, wearing a white lab coat. Her dark hair was pulled back into a tight bun, and her eyes were sharp and analytical. Pink-framed spectacles lay on her face with thick lenses within them.
President Morstell gestured toward her. “Meet our greatest scientist who made it all possible. Sharron Shoults.”
The woman waved her hand toward the heroes. “It’s great to meet you all.”
“Shoults?” Lightspeed spoke up, a surprised tone in his voice. “Like Decron Shoults?”
The woman smiled widely. “That is correct. I am the great-granddaughter of Decron Shoults.”
Ning was taken aback. Decron Shoults was the researcher who studied Aullazire decades ago, helping create the suppression field technology and the Extra-Ability Analyzer.
And it appeared that his great-granddaughter had taken the same path in life as well.
