Reincarnated as a Slave, I Built the Strongest Empire
Chapter 29: Thee Night II
The laboratory was silent except for the low hum of charged crystals and the steady rhythm of Harlan’s breathing.
Elandor stood over the restrained form of his nephew, sleeves rolled back, hands already glowing with layered preparatory magic. The final arrays had been completed. Suppression wards formed a glowing cage around the table. Reagents sat measured and ready. In the far corner, Cael remained unconscious under heavy stabilizers, a living caution that Elandor refused to look at directly.
"Once I begin," Elandor said quietly, though Harlan was already under the edge of induced sleep, "there is no pause. The core will either take hold or it will not."
He placed both palms on Harlan’s bare chest, directly over the sternum where the latent channels converged. Power flowed downward in a controlled, relentless stream.
The reaction was immediate and far stronger than it had been with Cael.
Harlan’s body arched hard against the leather restraints. The preparatory runes across his skin flared from faint lines into searing brands of light. A raw, involuntary sound tore from his throat as the forced energy met the dormant bloodline and found far more fuel than expected. The latent potential that had slept inside him for decades did not merely accept the seeded core. it seized it.
Elandor’s eyes widened slightly. He adjusted the flow at once, pouring additional stabilizers into the channels to keep the awakening from ripping the pathways open too quickly. Sweat beaded on his forehead. The crystals suspended above the table brightened and began to tremble.
Inside the storm of sensation, Harlan existed only in fragments.
There was pressure, immense, invasive, as if something vast were being driven into a space that had never been meant to hold it. Pain followed, white and total, racing along every nerve. Yet beneath the pain was something else: a recognition. The power flooding him did not feel entirely foreign. It felt like a locked door finally being broken open from the inside.
His back muscles locked. The restraints creaked. Magical energy erupted across his skin in visible arcs, far brighter and more coherent than the wild surges Cael had produced. The bloodline was answering.
Elandor worked with grim focus, weaving containment and reinforcement in rapid sequence. He had expected resistance. He had not expected the vessel to pull the core inward with such hungry force. For a dangerous moment the energy threatened to spiral beyond his control, the same catastrophic feedback that had damaged Cael rising like a wave.
Then, with a final, decisive binding, Elandor locked the core in place.
The violent light across Harlan’s body collapsed inward. The arcs of power snuffed out. The laboratory fell into a sudden, ringing quiet broken only by Harlan’s ragged breathing.
Elandor remained motionless for several heartbeats, monitoring the newly formed core with every sense available to him. It pulsed, strong, dense, and remarkably coherent. There was strain, yes, and deep exhaustion in the body that housed it, but the catastrophic instability that had plagued Cael was absent.
"It held," Elandor whispered. "By the old blood... it held."
He released the heaviest of the suppression wards and checked Harlan’s vital signs. The younger man was alive. More than that, he was intact.
Minutes passed before Harlan’s eyes opened.
They were no longer the same. A faint, residual glow lingered in the irises, the mark of a living core settling into its vessel. He blinked slowly, disoriented, then focused on his uncle’s face.
"Did it..." His voice was hoarse. "Did it work?"
"Yes." Elandor’s tone carried a rare edge of triumph tempered by residual tension. "The core has taken hold. Stronger than anticipated. The bloodline made the difference. You will need rest, significant rest, but the seeding itself was a success."
Harlan let out a weak, breathless laugh that turned into a cough. He felt hollowed out and overfull at the same time. Every muscle trembled with exhaustion. His limbs were lead. Yet beneath the weakness something new moved inside him, a deep, quiet reservoir of power that answered when he reached for it, even if only slightly.
He was no longer empty.
Elandor began unbuckling the restraints. "Do not attempt to draw on the core yet. It needs time to fully seat itself. Attempting active magic before then risks the same fractures we saw before."
Harlan nodded weakly as the final strap came free. He tried to sit up and managed only to prop himself on his elbows before dizziness forced him still.
That was when the upper hatch opened.
Antoine descended the stairs two at a time, rain-damp cloak trailing behind him. He stopped at the bottom, taking in the scene in a single glance: the discharged crystals, the scorch marks from the earlier surge, Elandor standing over Harlan, and Harlan himself, pale, sweat-soaked, and unmistakably changed.
Antoine’s expression hardened.
"You’re too late," Elandor said without turning. "The process is complete."
Antoine did not answer. His eyes were fixed on Harlan. Quietly, inwardly, he called on the system.
[Analyzing Target: Harlan]
[Race: Human (Bloodline-Awakened)]
[Status: Level 9 Artificially Seeded Mage – Core Successfully Integrated]
[Condition: Severe Post-Awakening Exhaustion – Core Stable]
"Level 9."
The number landed with cold clarity. Harlan, who had been a capable but ordinary warrior only hours earlier, now registered as a mage of higher level than Antoine himself. The core was stable, had it actually worked?
Harlan managed a faint, weary smile when he saw Antoine. "It worked," he rasped. "I can feel it."
Antoine said nothing.
He stood in silence at the foot of the stairs, the system’s data still hovering at the edge of his awareness. Elandor watched him with quiet satisfaction, as if daring him to object now that the results were undeniable. Harlan looked at him with exhausted triumph, waiting for some acknowledgment, some reaction.
Antoine gave him none.
He simply looked at the man who had once fought beside him with nothing but a spear and hard-earned skill, and who now carried a forced core that made him the strongest single combatant in the outpost. The dynamics had changed. Influence, authority, and danger had all been rewritten in the space of a single ritual.
Without a word, Antoine turned and climbed the stairs again, leaving the laboratory and its successful creation behind him.
Behind him, Harlan sank back against the table, trembling with fatigue and elation.
Elandor began the next phase of stabilizers, already calculating how soon the new mage could be made ready for the war that was coming.
