Chapter 407: Deep into the Demon Eye, Luo Zhan’s Secret Mission
Northern Domain, First Line of Defense, command tent.
The furnishings here were extremely simple. Aside from a massive holographic sand table and combat maps covering the walls, there was only a wide, solid wood desk.
The desk was piled high with documents, and beside them sat a set of the Four Treasures of the Study.
In a military camp filled with the reek of gunpowder and high-tech equipment, the brush, ink, paper, and inkstone seemed somewhat out of place.
But anyone who knew Luo Zhan was aware that the greatest private hobby of this “Blood-handed Butcher,” renowned for his decisiveness in slaughter, was calligraphy.
In his own words, killing too much makes the heart restless, and calligraphy can calm the heart.
Luo Zhan walked behind the desk and sat down. He didn’t speak right away, but instead sized up Chu Sheng, who had followed him in, with great interest.
“The reports say you possess immense intelligence, that you can even understand human speech and recognize written words.”
Luo Zhan pointed to the rice paper and brush on the desk.
“Since you’re here, don’t play dumb.”
“I know you can write. Go ahead.”
Luo Zhan placed both hands on the table and leaned forward slightly, his oppressive aura instantly washing over Chu Sheng.
“Tell me, what are you doing here in this godforsaken Northern Domain battlefield in the middle of the night instead of staying at Jing University?”
“And what, exactly, did you do to those Alien Race corpses?”
As he said this, Luo Zhan’s gaze turned exceptionally stern. It was a look of scrutiny, but more so, a warning.
Although Chu Sheng had earned military honors and was a hero of the Great Xia,
this was the frontline battlefield!
Any uncontrollable factor could lead to the collapse of the entire line of defense. As the commander, he had to have everything under his control.
Chu Sheng looked at Luo Zhan’s solemn expression and sighed internally.
’Tsk, these military types are so damn serious.’
’I, Lord Mosquito, just came here to pick up some scraps, recharge my system, and help you guys clean up the battlefield. Isn’t that doing a good deed?’
But he definitely couldn’t say that out loud.
’Recycling corpses to evolve an army of Insect Beasts… that’s just too outrageous. If I really told him, I couldn’t guarantee this Luo Zhan wouldn’t slice me up for research.’
’I need to think of a more high-minded reason.’
’Something that can explain my actions, establish a righteous and heroic image, and ideally, make him turn a blind eye to my “corpse collecting” in the future.’
Chu Sheng’s compound eyes shifted. He had an idea.
He slowly landed on the calligraphy brush.
For him, in his current state, controlling a single brush was almost effortless.
With a slight stir of his Mental Power, the heavy wolf-hair brush floated up on its own and dipped itself fully into the ink.
Chu Sheng controlled the brush, writing a single large character on the rice paper with a flamboyant flourish.
Although the strokes were somewhat crooked, the power behind them seemed to pierce through the paper, carrying an overwhelming, murderous aura!
“Kill!”
Just a single word.
Simple. Brutal. Direct.
After writing, Chu Sheng tossed the brush aside and flew back into the air, purposefully releasing a sliver of his ferocious aura as a Reincarnation Saint Mosquito.
The meaning was obvious:
’Don’t ask. If you have to ask, it’s because I have a grudge against the Alien Race!’
’If you have to ask, it’s because I can’t stand these bastards!’
’As for where the corpses went? Obviously, they were obliterated by the sheer force of my, Lord Mosquito’s, righteous fury!’
Luo Zhan stared at the still-wet character for “Kill” on the paper, stunned for a moment.
He had considered many possibilities.
But he had never expected the answer to be so… pure.
“Kill…”
Luo Zhan murmured the word, and then, suddenly, he started to laugh.
He didn’t believe it. Besides, the character was written extremely poorly, with no calligraphic artistry to speak of.
But that didn’t matter.
It didn’t stop him from liking this word.
The corners of Luo Zhan’s perpetually tense mouth now split into a somewhat exaggerated grin, and laughter rumbled from his chest.
“HAHAHAHA! Good! A fine ’Kill’ indeed!”
“A tiny little mosquito, yet you have quite the nerve!”
In this goddamn world, on this hopeless battlefield, reason is useless, and mercy is just asking for death.
There is only killing!
Killing until the Alien Race are terrified, killing until they no longer dare to take a single step onto Blue Star—that is the only truth!
Luo Zhan stopped laughing, his eyes narrowing as he looked at Chu Sheng.
“I know you’ve performed great deeds for the Military Department.”
“Now, I have another opportunity for merit here for you. I wonder if you want it.”
“Or rather, whether you dare to take it!”
Chu Sheng was taken aback.
’Oh?’
’Is he trying to give me, Lord Mosquito, a mission?’
’But…’
’If it’s a simple monster-killing quest, I can do that on my own. No need to listen to this Luo Zhan.’
’But this is a mission from the supreme commander of the Northern Domain’s First Line of Defense. The rewards can’t be shabby, right?’
’Besides, with this connection, won’t I be able to do whatever I want in the Northern Domain from now on? Won’t I have access to as many of those corpse resources as I want?’
At this thought, the gears in Chu Sheng’s mind began to turn furiously.
’I’ll hear him out first.’
Without hesitation, he once again controlled the brush and, next to the character for “Kill,” wrote another, smaller character:
“Speak.”
Seeing this, the glint in Luo Zhan’s eyes intensified.
He waved his hand.
VWOOM—
A pale golden curtain of light instantly enveloped the entire tent—a soundproof Barrier.
Then, his tone grew grave.
“Little mosquito, I’ve read all your files. I know your abilities.”
“Not only do you have incredible Speed, and you’re highly stealthy, but most importantly… you possess a powerful Spatial Ability, even capable of carrying people through long-distance Instant Teleportation.”
“That’s something even I can’t do.”
“Therefore, you are the most suitable candidate… No, you are the only choice.”
Luo Zhan took a deep breath, his voice dropping low, tinged with a suppressed, grim killing intent.
“Lately, something’s been off about that rift…”
“You’ve seen it too. The recent Alien Race attacks have been frequent, but they’ve all been Low Tier cannon fodder. There hasn’t even been a single decent Lord Level combatant.”
“This is highly unusual.”
“It’s like the calm before the storm, or like… they’re deliberately trying to hide something.”
“My gut tells me that behind that demonic eye, a great storm is brewing—one that could potentially wipe out the entire Northern Domain line of defense.”
“But our reconnaissance methods can’t get inside at all.”
“So…”
Luo Zhan looked at Chu Sheng and said, enunciating each word:
“We need a special kind of scout.”
“One small enough, stealthy enough, fast enough, with Spatial Ability for self-preservation, and… reckless enough to not care about their own life.”
“To go deep inside the demonic eye!”
…
’Go deep inside the demonic eye?’
Hearing this, Chu Sheng’s two antennae twitched slightly.
’The other side of that demonic-eye-shaped Alien Race rift leads to the aliens’ main base.’
’The risk is a bit high!’
’I am indeed small enough, stealthy enough, and fast enough, and my Spatial Ability is ridiculously strong.’
’But I’m not someone who doesn’t care about my own life!’
’Unless… the benefits are good enough.’
’The bigger the waves, the more expensive the fish!’
’If my safety can be guaranteed, then it’s not like I can’t accept this mission.’
’First of all, to me, the Alien Race is a treasure trove! Their corpses are, and the living ones are even more so!’
’Second, since this Luo Zhan is asking me to do something so dangerous, there’s no way he won’t offer some benefits, right?’
