"I swear it my love," Caleb promised with a firm eyes and warm smile. He stepped back, picking up the heavy gun belt and buckling it flawlessly around his waist. The heavy steel revolvers settled against his thighs. He picked up his hat, turning toward the door. The tycoon was gone. The warlord was marching.
The heavy oak doors of the mansion closed behind Caleb with a solid, echoing thud, sealing the warmth and the quiet anxiety of his home away from the cold, violent reality of the night. He stood on the marble portico for a brief second, adjusting the collar of his heavy canvas tactical coat against the biting autumn wind. The twin M1911 pistols rested with a comforting, heavy familiarity against his thighs.
Waiting for him at the base of the steps was a young capo, holding the reins of Caleb's prized, pitch black Arabian horse. The beast was practically dancing in place, its breath pluming in the frigid air, sensing the aggressive, electric tension rolling off its master.
Caleb descended the steps, taking the reins and swinging smoothly into the custom tooled leather saddle. He didn't look back at the glowing windows of the master suite. If he looked back, the husband would hesitate. The warlord could not afford to.
With a sharp click of his tongue and a spur to the flanks, the Arabian surged forward, tearing down the gravel driveway and bursting through the iron gates of the Garden District.
Caleb rode hard through the winding, cobblestone streets of Saint Denis. The city was alive with the evening's aristocratic revelry, but as the black Arabian thundered past the high end theaters and the crowded outdoor cafes, conversations abruptly ceased. The sight of Caleb Thorne, stripped of his tailored suits and armed for an absolute massacre, sent a chilling ripple through the populace.
He reached the western perimeter of the city, where the cobblestones gave way to the packed dirt roads leading out toward the Scarlet Meadows.
The staging ground was a terrifying testament to the industrial and martial might of the Thorne Holding Company.
Nearly three hundred men were gathered in the darkness, a massive, heavily armed battalion stretching down the road. A fleet of transport wagons, pulled by heavy draft horses, stood ready to haul men and recover stolen supplies. Interspersed among the cavalry were six pitch black Model T motorcars, their brass headlamps piercing the gloom with brilliant, steady beams of artificial light, casting long, monstrous shadows against the tree line.
At the head of the column, sitting atop their own horses, was the inner circle.
Arthur Morgan sat on a massive, scarred Missouri Fox Trotter, pulling the lever of his customized repeating rifle to check the chamber. John Marston, Javier Escuella, Bill Williamson, Lenny Summers, Sean MacGuire, and Kieran Duffy were formed up in a tight, lethal half circle behind him. They were the original blood of the gang, the men who had survived the mud and the snow before the empire was ever built. Tonight, they looked less like corporate executives and exactly like the hardened, ruthless outlaws they had always been.
Vincenzo and Silvio, mounted on tall thoroughbreds, rode forward to meet Caleb as he pulled the black Arabian to a halt at the front of the army.
"The perimeter is locked, Boss," Vincenzo reported, his voice tight with adrenaline. "The capos are loaded with surplus ammunition from the foundries. We have fifty men in the wagons, twenty in the motorcars for rapid response, and the rest mounted as light cavalry. The scouts have already pinpointed the primary staging camps of the targets."
"Everything is ready, Caleb," Silvio added, a dark, eager grin splitting his face. "Just give the word."
Caleb looked over the assembled army. He looked at Arthur, who gave a single, firm nod. He looked at Bill, who was practically shaking with anticipation, holding a massive pump action shotgun resting against his thigh. He looked at the hundreds of Italian and Irish enforcers who now wore the Thorne insignia, their eyes burning with a fanatical readiness to bleed for the man who paid them.
"Then what are we waiting for?" Caleb said, his voice cold, carrying effortlessly over the low rumble of the motorcar engines. "It's time to move out. We clear this state today."
Caleb turned the Arabian, facing the dark, open expanse of the frontier, and kicked his spurs into the horse's flanks.
The army moved.
The sound was apocalyptic. The synchronized thunder of hundreds of hooves, combined with the mechanical, guttural roar of the Model T engines and the grinding wheels of the heavy transport wagons, shook the very foundations of the outer city.
As the vanguard rode past the final checkpoints of Saint Denis, the civilian reaction was immediate and chaotic. A late night streetcar screeched to a halt, the driver abandoning his post and running into an alleyway. Patrons in the Bastille Saloon pressed their faces against the plate glass windows, their eyes wide with panic, convinced that a riot or a military coup was underway. The local Saint Denis police officers, clutching their wooden batons, took one look at the sheer scale and firepower of the Thorne army and wisely turned their backs, walking rapidly in the opposite direction.
Panic rippled through the streets, but as the roaring column pushed past the city limits and disappeared into the darkness of the countryside, the panic slowly morphed into breathless, frantic gossip. The city realized that the king of the South was not burning Saint Denis, he was riding out to wage war on the outside of the city.
The night air grew colder as the army pushed deep into the Scarlet Meadows. The rolling plains and scattered groves of trees offered little cover in the moonlight.
Caleb pulled the column to a halt a mile outside of Bolger Glade, an old, ruined Civil War battlefield featuring a bombed-out church and miles of deep, defensive trench networks.
Vincenzo rode up beside him. "The scouts report the Lemoyne Raiders have heavily fortified the old church, Boss. They have at least eighty men dug into the trenches. And they have the surgical steel they hijacked this morning stacked in the center of the ruins."
"They think they are fighting a war that ended thirty years ago," Arthur grunted, spitting into the dirt. "They're dug in deep. It's going to be a bloodbath if we just charge the trenches on horseback."
"We aren't charging them on horseback," Caleb replied, his tactical mind dissecting the battlefield. "We are going to introduce them to twentieth century mechanized shoot out."
Caleb turned to Silvio. "Bring the Model Ts to the front. I want three motorcars on the left flank, three on the right. Keep the headlights off until we are within two hundred yards. When I give the signal, you flip the headlamps on, blinding their trench lines, and the men in the passenger seats open fire. Arthur, you take the center with the mounted capos. You push straight up the middle while the cars pin them down."
"And you?" John asked, checking the cylinder of his revolver.
"I am going to break their line," Caleb stated simply.
The army dismounted where necessary, the tactical formation shifting flawlessly. The six motorcars crept forward in the darkness, their engines idling as quietly as possible, rolling over the soft earth of the meadows. Caleb rode at the absolute front of the center column, the black Arabian moving like a ghost through the tall grass.
Through the gloom, the jagged, broken stone walls of the ruined church finally appeared against the night sky. The soft glow of campfires flickered from within the deep trenches, accompanied by the loud, boastful laughter of the Lemoyne Raiders, completely unaware of the industrial army currently surrounding them.
Caleb waited until the column was exactly two hundred yards from the primary trench line.
He raised his hand.
With a synchronized, mechanical click, the six Model T motorcars simultaneously engaged their brass headlamps.
Six piercing, brilliant beams of pure white light violently shattered the darkness, sweeping across the battlefield and illuminating the Lemoyne Raider trenches with blinding intensity. The sudden, unnatural light caused absolute chaos. Shouts of alarm and confusion erupted from the ruins as the Raiders scrambled for their weapons, shielding their eyes against the glare.
"Now!" Caleb roared.
The roaring engines of the Model Ts spiked as the drivers slammed the pedals down. The cars surged forward on the flanks. From the passenger seats, the elite capos opened fire with repeating shotguns and surplus military rifles. The deafening roar of the volley tore through the night, ripping into the confused Raiders before they could even aim their weapons.
Caleb kicked his horse into a dead sprint, leading the center charge.
"With me!" Arthur bellowed, kicking his own horse forward, firing his custom revolver over the head of his mount. Bill, John, Javier, and a hundred capos surged behind them, a tidal wave of horses and gunfire crashing down upon the old battlefield.
The Raiders, desperate and fanatical, began to return fire from the safety of the deep trenches. A capo riding to Caleb's left took a heavy rifle round to the chest, violently thrown from his saddle to die in the dirt. Another horse screamed, its leg shattered by a stray bullet, sending its rider tumbling into the grass.
The reality of war was immediate and brutal. Men were dying.
But Caleb did not slow down. He did not seek cover. He became a force of nature.
As his Arabian leapt effortlessly over the first line of trenches, Caleb drew the twin M1911 pistols from his thighs. The moment his hands touched the cold steel grips, his Max Level Dead Eye engaged.
The chaotic, deafening roar of the battlefield instantly fell away, replaced by the heavy, rhythmic thud of his own heartbeat. The world slowed to a crawl. The muzzle flashes of the Raider rifles looked like hovering, frozen stars in the darkness. Caleb's vision sharpened to a supernatural degree, painting his enemies in stark, undeniable clarity.
He saw a Raider aiming a repeater at Arthur's chest. He saw two more operating a heavy Maxim gun mounted in the window of the ruined church. He saw five men scrambling out of a trench to his right with shotguns.
Caleb moved faster than human biology should allow.
Crack crack crack crack crack.
The semi automatic M1911s barked in rapid, flawless succession, the slides cycling faster than the eye could follow. He didn't aim, he simply willed the bullets to their targets.
The Raider aiming at Arthur fell backward, a neat hole perfectly centered between his eyes. The two men manning the Maxim gun slumped over the heavy iron barrel simultaneously, their lives extinguished before they could even pull the trigger. The five men climbing out of the trench collapsed in a tangled heap, each taking a perfectly placed .45 caliber round to the heart.
Caleb's Dead Eye faded, the explosive roar of the battlefield rushing back into his ears. He dropped the empty magazines, slamming two fresh clips into the pistols with a metallic snap, and kept firing.
The men of the Thorne syndicate watched their boss work, and a terrifying, fanatical courage seized them. Seeing Caleb ride through a hail of bullets completely untouched, delivering death with mathematical perfection, drove them into a frenzy.
"Push the line! Push the line!" John screamed, vaulting his horse over a sandbag barricade and firing his repeater from the hip, dropping two Raiders into the mud.
Bill Williamson leapt from his horse directly into one of the trenches, letting out a wild, booming roar as he pumped his shotgun, clearing the narrow earthen corridor with devastating, brutal efficiency. Lenny and Sean fought back to back near the ruined church doors, their rifles barking in unison, providing covering fire as Javier scaled the crumbling stone wall to flank the remaining snipers.
The Lemoyne Raiders were entirely outclassed. They were fighting a modern, highly disciplined army led by a man who moved like a demon.
Their arrogance quickly fractured into absolute, whimpering terror. They tried to break. They threw down their weapons, turning to flee into the woods behind the church.
"No quarter!" Vincenzo shouted, firing his pistol into the back of a fleeing Raider. "Burn them out!"
The capos showed absolutely no mercy. The men who had hijacked their supplies and murdered their teamsters were hunted down in the grass and executed.
Within twenty minutes, the deafening roar of the firefight faded into the heavy, ringing silence of the aftermath, broken only by the groans of the dying and the sputtering idle of the motorcar engines.
Caleb holstered his steaming M1911s. He guided his horse to the center of the ruined church, where the heavy wooden crates of surgical steel sat untouched.
Arthur rode up beside him, his chest heaving, his face splattered with mud and blood that was not his own.
"The Raiders are done, Caleb," Arthur reported, his voice raspy from the cordite. "Every last one of them in this camp is dead. We lost eight capos in the initial charge. Four more are wounded."
Caleb's jaw tightened. Eight men dead. It was a heavy cost, but it was the price of empire.
"Load our dead into the wagons," Caleb ordered softly, staring at the stolen surgical steel. "They will be buried in Saint Denis with absolute honor. Their families will receive a full pension for life. Load the steel into the other wagons. Then, we burn this entire camp to the ground."
The capos moved swiftly, dragging the bodies of the Raiders into the trenches and dousing the remaining tents and wooden barricades in kerosene. A single match was struck, and the ruined church of Bolger Glade erupted into a towering inferno, a blazing beacon of Thorne's wrath that could be seen for miles across the plains.
"Where to now, Boss?" Silvio asked, riding up alongside Vincenzo, both men looking energized by the slaughter.
Caleb turned his horse, looking east, toward the dark, oppressive tree line that marked the beginning of the swamps.
"The surgical steel is secured," Caleb stated, his eyes cold and focused. "Now, we recover the copper. We ride into Bayou Nwa."
The army remounted. The wounded were secured in the transport wagons, and the column moved out, leaving the burning ruins of the Lemoyne Raiders behind.
As they crossed the territorial threshold from the open plains of the Scarlet Meadows into the dense, suffocating swamps of Lagras and Bayou Nwa, the entire atmosphere of the night changed.
The biting wind died completely, replaced by a thick, stagnant humidity that smelled of rotting vegetation, sulfur, and stagnant water. A heavy, creeping fog rolled in off the bayous, clinging to the knees of the horses and drastically reducing visibility. The towering cypress trees, draped in thick veils of Spanish moss, looked like skeletal hands reaching down from the dark canopy.
The boastful, loud bravado of the capos evaporated. The swamp demanded a fearful, nervous silence.
The Night Folk did not boast. They did not shout. They were a terrifying, silent cult of killers who coated themselves in mud and ash, utilizing machetes, poisoned arrows, and the absolute darkness of the bayou to slaughter their victims.
"Keep your eyes peeled, boys," Arthur warned, his voice low, his repeater resting across his saddle pommel. "These swamp freaks don't fight like normal men. They hide in the mud. They drop from the trees."
Caleb ordered the Model Ts to the front of the column, utilizing their headlights to cut through the dense, swirling fog. The beams of light illuminated the twisted roots and the murky, still water of the bayou, casting eerie, shifting shadows that made every tree stump look like a crouching man.
They pushed deeper into the swamp, the only sound the squelch of hooves in the mud and the low hum of the engines.
Suddenly, a terrifying, unnatural clicking sound echoed through the fog. It sounded like someone clicking two pieces of bone together.
Click click click click.
"Hold!" Caleb ordered, raising his fist.
The column ground to a halt. The capos raised their weapons, their eyes darting nervously into the impenetrable gray mist.
A sharp, whistling sound sliced through the heavy air.
With a sickening thwack, a heavy, crude arrow embedded itself deep into the throat of a capo riding near the front. The man didn't even have time to scream, he simply choked on his own blood and tumbled backward off his horse into the swamp water.
Panic instantly seized the street soldiers.
"Where did it come from?!" Silvio yelled, firing his pistol blindly into the fog.
The swamp erupted into absolute, silent violence.
Dozens of terrifying, ash covered figures exploded from the murky water and dropped from the low hanging branches of the cypress trees. They didn't yell. They didn't roar. They rushed the column with terrifying speed, wielding rusted machetes, heavy cleavers, and long, jagged knives.
A Night Folk warrior dropped directly onto the hood of a Model T, shattering the windshield with a heavy axe and dragging the screaming driver out into the mud. Another leaped from the water, pulling a capo from his saddle and driving a knife into his ribs before slipping back beneath the murky surface.
The capos began firing wildly, their shotguns blasting blindly into the fog, often hitting the trees or nearly hitting their own men in the chaotic and terrifying close quarters ambush.
"Hold your fire!" Caleb roared, his voice cutting through the panic like a blade. "Form a defensive ring around the wagons! Do not break formation!" Caleb knew that conventional tactics were useless against an enemy that used the environment as a weapon. He needed precision. He needed to be the apex predator in a swamp full of monsters.
