Chapter 2658: Return To The Dilapidated House
Chapter 2658: Chapter 2658: Return To The Dilapidated House
"Miss Chang, whenever you are ready, please tell me everything you can remember." The female police officer said, opening a fresh notebook to record every detail.
"Yes..." Chang Shuchun nodded.
She recounted the events exactly as she had prepared. She also told the police officer that she did not know that three years had passed until Yu Qi pointed it out to her.
"So, you were kept in a room without windows? Do you recall anything the kidnapper did to you during that time? The female police officer asked gently.
"To be honest, I have almost no memory of the time in between. I simply woke up, realised I was in an unfamiliar place, and seized the chance to run away." Chang Shuchun stated.
"And there was no one guarding the house when you left?" The female police officer inquired.
"No. The house was empty. I walked along the road until I encountered Miss Tang." Chang Shuchun confirmed.
The female police officer exchanged a significant glance with her colleague.
"Do you remember that house?" The female police officer asked.
"Yes." Chang Shuchun replied, nodding.
"Do you mind if I ask you to show us the place later?" The female police officer asked.
"Yes. I will show you." Chang Shuchun nodded firmly.
"You are incredibly lucky that Miss Tang found you out there." The female police officer stated.
"You all seemed to know Miss Tang very well. Do you mind me asking who she is?" Chang Shuchun asked, her curiosity finally getting the better of her.
"Of course, we know her! She is the Chairwoman of the Qinyue Group." The female police officer said, her voice tinged with clear admiration for Yu Qi.
"Chairwoman? I... I thought she was a medical researcher." Chang Shuchun exclaimed, recalling the professional tone of the calls Yu Qi had taken earlier.
"Oh, she is indeed the Chairwoman, but she is also a doctor and researcher." The female police officer said, her tone shifting toward that of an enthusiastic fan.
The male police officer in the corner cleared his throat and coughed twice, a subtle reminder to stay professional. The female police officer flushed slightly, realising she had strayed off-task.
"I am sorry, I got a bit off-topic. We need to secure that location. Can you lead us to the house right now?" The female police officer asked.
"Yes." Chang Shuchun nodded, her voice barely a whisper as she stood up to face the shadows of her past one last time.
The police convoy made its way back to the isolated location. As the officers pulled up, they exchanged uneasy glances, taking in the dilapidated state of the structure. The house looked like it was holding itself together by sheer luck, appearing more like a carcass of a building than a residence.
"Are you absolutely certain this is the house where you woke up?" The female police officer asked, her scepticism clear as she looked at the rotting wood and overgrown weeds.
Chang Shuchun nodded slowly, her eyes fixed on the door. "I am sure."
"I see... You can wait here in the safety of the vehicle, and we will head in to secure the perimeter." The female police officer directed, her tone shifting into a strictly professional gear.
She and her colleagues stepped out of their patrol cars, the gravel crunching loudly under their boots in the oppressive silence of the remote area. They did not rush the entrance. Instead, they moved with practised caution, circling the exterior of the house first to examine its structural integrity and look for any signs of recent movement.
"I don’t pick up any signs of life. The place is completely rundown. Honestly, it looks half-abandoned." One of the officers noted, his hand resting instinctively near his belt.
"I agree." The female police officer surmised, peering through a grime-covered, cracked pane of glass. "Looking at the rot on these window frames, I find it hard to believe she was here for three years. She must have been moved to this location only recently."
"Regardless, let’s check the interior and see if we can find anything that could help us with this case." Another officer suggested.
The others nodded in solemn agreement. They approached the front entrance, and when the lead officer reached for the doorknob and pulled, the door groaned open without resistance. It was already unlocked. The inside looked exactly as the police officers had imagined, a hollowed-out shell of a home. The glasses were everywhere, and some parts of the wall were broken down.
The officers went their separate ways to begin a room-by-room sweep of the house. The female police officer entered a room at the end of the hallway and came to a sudden halt. Inside, she saw a simple bed and a standing wooden closet.
The unsettling part was the condition of the furniture. Both the bed and the closet were in remarkably good condition, polished and free of dust. A jarring, impossible contrast to the ruined state of the rest of the house. It was as if this single room existed in a different timeline. She moved closer, pulling on her gloves before checking inside the closet.
There were a few women’s and men’s clothing items hanging neatly inside, all of them in excellent condition. Sensing she was close to a breakthrough, the officer pushed her investigation further by thoroughly searching every corner of the closet. Tucked away in a hidden compartment, she made a critical discovery.
She found several identification cards. One unmistakably belonged to Chang Shuchun, and another belonged to a man named Ma Chunwei. She immediately called out to her colleagues, her voice echoing through the hollow house.
"What did you find here?" Her colleagues asked, rushing into the room.
