Chapter 1022: Chapter 1016: Gaining Command Authority_1
Jing Xin and his team were on the other side, participating in the rescue operation. As soon as they arrived, they were assigned to this area. Beneath this expanse of rubble, they had no clue where they might find people who were still alive. They searched meticulously, eager to find even faint signs of life. They hoped to locate as many survivors as possible.
However, their equipment was sadly lacking; they didn’t even have a detection dog. Trying to find survivors under these conditions was far from easy.
“Deputy Head, do you think anyone beneath this pile might still be alive?” Li Dabao spoke, watching everyone’s concentrated efforts to locate those who were trapped underneath.
“Da Bao, stay quiet and concentrate on the search. Listen carefully for any sounds that may indicate someone is alive. If you talk, you might drown out their calls for help,” Liang Shaohui advised, standing beside Li Dabao.
“Captain, I understand. I just feel so helpless seeing them like this, so I wanted to ask,” Li Dabao replied, his tone echoing his low spirits.
“We all feel the same way, and that’s why we need to search even harder. Each person we find is a tiny victory. Any delay may cost lives,” Ding Xi advised as he walked past them.
The team members who had been training together were now assigned to search for potential survivors. Their long-standing camaraderie allowed them to cooperate seamlessly.
“Alright, everyone stop talking now. Listen, I think I can hear someone calling out for help,” Jing Xin interrupted their conversation.
Upon hearing this, everyone stopped and listened intently, hoping to detect what their commander had heard.
“Deputy Head, you’re right! It sounds like it’s coming from over there,” Li Dabao said pointing to a large piece of rubble.
“Let’s go check it out.” Jing Xin led a few of his comrades to the indicated area. They squatted to examine closer and found a significant difference between this area and the others.
Underneath the piles of bricks, a large beam was set in place. Carefully, they removed the bricks. To everyone’s surprise, they found a girl around fourteen or fifteen hiding beneath it. She didn’t seem frightened at all; she was calmly waiting for help.
“Don’t be scared, little girl. We are here to get you out,” Liang Shaohui advised, moved by her courage, which even surpassed many of the boys they had encountered.
“Sir, please rescue my mother and brother first. They are right next to me,” Zhuo Mengling implored, relieved to finally see her rescuers.
“What? There are others here with you?” Li Dabao was taken aback by her selflessness. Her first thought upon seeing them wasn’t to ask for her own rescue but that of her mother and brother.
“Yes, they are next to me,” Zhuo Mengling replied, her eyes indicating their position.
However, Jing Xin and his team became increasingly disheartened as they looked in the direction she pointed out. They had a dreadful hunch about what they might find and hoped that they were wrong.
How would this little girl face the traumatic loss of her loved ones? She had mentioned her little brother was also there, which could mean an even more heartbreaking outcome. They felt a heavy weight on their hearts. They detested such tragic circumstances brought about by natural disasters, but felt powerless to do anything about it.
