The sea air had lost its salt. Here, three leagues inland from the shattered coast, the atmosphere tasted like hot iron, scorched copper, and the cold, static hum of dead magic.

Mei stood atop a jagged knuckle of basalt, the shadow-wings at her back folded into a tight, dark mantle that rippled like liquid obsidian. Her ribs burned—a dull, rhythmic ache where the Heart of the Apocalypse throbbed against her chest—but her eyes remained fixed on the churning mist below.

A sharp, metallic clack-clack-clack shattered the silence.

Out of the boiling sulfur clouds bounded Ryan, his tactical visor exploding with frantic, corrupted lines of code across his face.

"Spatial sensors are still fried, Mei," Ryan panted, wiping a streak of dark grease and ocean brine from his forehead. His breath plumed white in the unnatural cold radiating off the dreadnought's wreckage. "The system's UI is completely severed out here. No stats, no threat levels, no mini-map. We're flying entirely blind."

"Good," Mei said, her voice dropping into a low, granite rasp. "The system was just their leash anyway."

A heavy, bone-rattling thud shook the spire as Joshua crested the ridge. His shadow-forged shield was pitted and blackened from the orbital beam's thermal back-blast, his leather armor singing with the stench of burnt hair and ozone. He dragged a massive, liquid-silver gauntlet behind him—a trophy ripped directly from one of the downed Astraean vanguards. He tossed it onto the stone, where it hissed and froze the soil beneath it.

"Kael is running the perimeter," Joshua grunted, resting his forearm on the rim of his shield. "The black lightning in his blade is still acting like a lightning rod for their lingering spatial frequency. If any more of those silver ships drop out of the clouds, he'll feel the air fold before they hit."

"And Captain Shane?" Mei asked, her eyes narrowing.

"Right behind you," a deep voice rumbled from the shadow of the cliff face.

Captain Shane Williams stepped out of the dark, his heavy, scarred chest piece gleaming under the violet auroras overhead. Unlike the rest of the team, his hands were steady as he calibrated a brass-and-crystal scanner he'd salvaged from the wreck. The device clicked and rotated, focusing on the pulsing violet veins running down Mei's arms.

"The Astraean energy signature isn't mana, Mei," Shane said calmly, stowing the device in his coat pocket. "It's compressed spatial pressure. That's why their armor didn't register on our old skills. Your Heart didn't cut through their shields back on the ship—it unraveled their physical density."

Mei looked down at her hands. The black veins swollen beneath her skin thrummed with a feverish, burning heat, answering the deep, subterranean pulse of the sky above them.

"They called us cattle," Joshua growled, slamming his fist against his shield. "They built a fence around our world, locked us in a seven-hundred-year loop, and treated our entire realm like a farm."

"Then we tear down the farm," Mei said, turning to face her team.

The wind caught her mantle, snapping the liquid shadow outward into jagged, plasma-edged wings that cut the fog into drifting ribbons. Behind her, the sky remained split open—a raw, bleeding wound where the stars of Astraea burned cold and unfamiliar.

"Ryan, take the high ridge and keep your scanners on the spatial tear," Mei ordered, her voice cutting through the gale like a drawn blade. "Joshua, set the shield line at the narrow pass. Captain Shane, coordinate the Vanguard vanguard lines. If those silver sphere drones drop again, I want them grounded before they fire."

The three of them nodded, the residual exhaustion on their faces hardening into lethal precision.

"What about you?" Shane asked, his hand resting firmly on the hilt of his broadsword.

Mei looked up at the fractured sky, twin blades unsheathing from her forearms with a high-frequency, metallic screech that set the surrounding air ablaze with violet sparks.

"I'm going to teach the Empire what happens when the cattle stop bleeding."
