Gao Lan was eating some fruit.

When Mrs. Qin returned, Gao Lan stood up. "Mom, a really strange call came in about half an hour ago."

Mrs. Qin looked at her as soon as she heard that.

"What strange call?"

"Someone called and didn’t say a word. When I asked who it was, they just hung up. I have no idea what that was about."

Gao Lan suddenly had a thought. "Mom, do you think it could be some kind of criminal?"

Mrs. Qin: ...?

’What kind of criminal would call the house?’

’The only people who’d call the house are either my daughter or my sons.’

’But based on what Gao Lan said, it couldn’t have been Qin Wenying.’

’After all, if Wen Ying really called home, she wouldn’t just hang up without a word, even if Gao Lan was the one who answered.’

’Of course, her younger daughter-in-law, Mingxue, was also out of the question; she wouldn’t hang up without saying anything either.’

She guessed it was Qin Wenhao.

"Don’t worry about it. They probably just changed their mind about calling. Anyway, how’s your stomach? Feeling any better?"

Gao Lan had mentioned her stomach was hurting a bit when Mrs. Qin left this morning.

Mrs. Qin had tried to persuade her to go to the hospital, but Gao Lan had said she’d wait and see, so Mrs. Qin had gone out to take care of her own errands.

She had rushed back to see if the pain was still there. If it was, she was determined to take her to the hospital right away.

"Mom, my stomach is much better. It doesn’t hurt anymore."

Gao Lan said, feeling a little guilty.

The reason she had claimed to have a stomachache this morning was because she’d had a little tiff with Qin Wenze. She wanted to smooth things over but couldn’t bring herself to make the first move, so she’d lied about having a stomachache.

She hadn’t expected her mother-in-law to insist on taking her to the hospital—how could she dare go?

She could only say she’d wait and see, claiming it didn’t hurt as much anymore and that she’d definitely go to the hospital if the pain got worse.

Ever since she decided she wanted a child, she had tampered with their birth control.

However, to her great disappointment, she hadn’t gotten pregnant.

This left her on edge for a whole month—she even started to fear that the hardships she’d endured as a sent-down youth had damaged her body, leaving her unable to have any more children.

’If she really couldn’t have children, would her marriage to Qin Wenze still be secure?’

’Qin Wenze had two biological children of his own, but she had none.’

’Even though she treated Qin Wenze’s two children as her own flesh and blood...’

’...how could that compare to having a child of your own blood?’

’She had even planned to secretly find some herbal remedies to try.’

’Fortunately, she never got the chance.’

’After all, she’d need a good excuse to be drinking medicine for no apparent reason, right?’

’She couldn’t very well announce she was taking medicine for infertility.’

Thankfully, the heavens smiled down on her.

She never expected that even without taking the medicine, she’d still manage to get pregnant.

By now, it had been exactly three months.

Mrs. Qin looked at her, still not entirely at ease. "Are you sure you’re okay?"

Gao Lan said at once, "Mom, I’m really fine. It doesn’t hurt at all anymore. If I were in pain, I would definitely go to the hospital. Please, don’t worry!"

’How could she possibly let anything happen to her child?’

Before, she had been quite enthusiastic about taking the college entrance exam next year.

But ever since getting pregnant, her focus had shifted entirely to the baby.

’Life in the Qin family was just too good; compared to her past, it was like she was living in a honey pot.’

’Most importantly, her mother-in-law was incredibly easy to get along with—not one of those terrible mothers-in-law from other families.’

’She really couldn’t understand her husband’s ex-wife—how could that woman have let herself be so disliked by the Qin family?’

’She would never be like that.’

Since Gao Lan was so insistent, Mrs. Qin relented. "All right, then. But you should still be extra careful for a while!"
