Chapter 5509: Chapter 5509: Family Affairs

Speaking of the household matters, Uncle Fu, who was away from home, hadn’t paid much attention when he was at home. At home, the Old Man kept a close eye on him, forbidding him to talk too much and burdening Ye Jian with worries.

Once outside, however, Uncle Fu was free to speak his mind, naturally only sharing the good news and not the worries. Mainly because, at home, there really wasn’t any bad news to tell, except for the minor concerns when the Old Man occasionally caught a cold or coughed.

"Everything is quite convenient at home. Besides me taking care of the Old Man, the security guards and their team are very attentive, too. You really don’t have to worry about the household. Take good care of yourself in the squad, and the Old Man will be even better," he said.

Uncle Fu, the duty officer who had cared for the Old Man for the longest time, had long regarded him as his own elder and, being about the same age as Chief Engineer Fu, had come to honor the Old Man as his own father due to his fatherless childhood.

Several times the Old Man had mentioned adopting Uncle Fu as a son by choice, but Uncle Fu never agreed. After all, he had a whole host of heedless relatives at home, including his underachieving son and daughter-in-law, who had once sneaked into the capital to seek a favor from the Old Man, infuriating Uncle Fu to the point of nearly disowning them.

Nevertheless, he ultimately felt indebted to his family and sometimes had no choice but to endure it.

Ye Jian was unaware of these matters.

Uncle Fu also didn’t want to mention his family affairs in front of Ye Jian and always avoided it, especially during the Spring Festival when he was worried she might ask about his family.

So, Uncle Fu started joking again, "This year is truly great. In the past, those who came to pay New Year’s visits often brought their younger family members, and the Old Man felt quite sour in his heart. But this year, with the young lady keeping the Old Man company to entertain guests, the Old Man won’t feel jealous anymore."

Ye Jian pursed her lips and smiled. It seemed that her identity as a member of the Fu family would be hard to conceal this Spring Festival. If word got out, it would surely shock many people, like Madam Li and Madam Qin.

Old Master Li had passed away, and the biggest threat had been removed. Ye Jian no longer intended to hide her identity as the Old Man’s granddaughter.

There was no need for explicit explanations; letting things take their course was best.

Ye Jian followed Uncle Fu around all morning before finally carrying bags big and small back to Dan Gui Garden. Next door, the Qin household seemed to be livening up as security guards bustled in and out.

A security officer told Ye Jian that Old Master Qin didn’t want to spend the Spring Festival in the hospital and insisted on returning home. His family couldn’t persuade him otherwise and had to let Old Master Qin spend the festival at home, but they still took special care to have a nurse and a doctor accompany him.

The Old Man laughed and shook his head, "It’s true, the older you get, the more you become like a child, so willful."

"Old Master Qin probably feels more comfortable at home during the Spring Festival. After all, having his son-in-law visit for the first time and spending the occasion in the hospital would be somewhat inauspicious," Uncle Fu said with a laugh as he consoled the Old Man. "Don’t worry. With nurses and doctors at home to provide care, nothing will go wrong. If you’re really concerned, we can visit later. An Jiaxin can accompany you."

Upon returning to Dan Gui Garden, it was usually the case that Ye Jian would not step out of the Fu family’s gate. This time, however, she had been to the Qin house, so Uncle Fu could surmise something.

The Old Man’s granddaughter no longer needed to hide.

That was certainly the case. The Old Man nodded and said to Ye Jian, "Your father must be on his way back now. Just now, Grandpa Xia mentioned to me that we should take advantage of the New Year with both elders present to set the wedding date, and have a simple engagement ceremony. Little Six must have talked to you about this too, right?"
