Silas left the Sunless Throne on the forty-sixth day.

The journey to Valor's Hold took three days by horse. The trade road wound south through the mountain passes, then east across the central plains. Maren rode with Silas — the intelligence officer had insisted on escort, citing security concerns. The coordinator was traveling without the old law's institutional protection, into the territory of a power that had demanded the meeting on its own terms.

The first day's ride was through the mountain passes. The provisions hummed in the binding, weaker now — the distance from the source reducing the coordinator's sensitivity. Silas could still feel the institutions, still feel the iron flowing, but the feeling was thinner. The source was farther away. The binding stretched.

"The source's fatigue," Silas said to Maren. "The iron flow is the source's output. The output is declining. The decline will affect every institution on the continent — less iron means weaker provisions, weaker provisions mean weaker institutions."

"Weaker institutions mean the Crown's governance declines. The Dawn Assembly's holy grid degrades. Everyone loses."

"Everyone loses. But the source gains rest. The source has been tired for centuries. The rest is necessary. The rest is the care."

The second day's ride crossed the central plains. The plains were agricultural — grain fields, livestock, small villages. The villages were poor. The merchants who bought the plains' grain had less credit, paid less, and the villages received less for their crops.

"The faces," Maren said. The intelligence officer was looking at a village they passed — stone houses, a market square with three stalls instead of ten, children watching from a doorway with the blank patience of children who had learned that strangers rarely brought anything.

The third day's ride entered the Dawn Assembly's territory. The border was marked by the holy grid's presence — the iron filaments in the buildings changing from the shadow grid's dark filaments to the holy grid's bright. The light was different. The light said: you are entering a different jurisdiction.

Valor's Hold appeared at midday. The cathedral's spires were visible from miles away — the converted religious structure that served as the Dawn Assembly's administrative centre. The spires were the continent's tallest buildings outside the Sunless Throne. Seraphina built upward because building upward said: we are here, we are permanent, we are not going away.

Maren looked at the spires. "The coordinator is riding into a rival's capital with a different agenda than the rival expects. The rival will be surprised. The surprise may be welcome or hostile."

"The preparation is the source's history. The old law is an imposed system. The imposition is what Seraphina has been fighting. Seraphina called the old law a cage. Seraphina was right. The source confirmed it. The cage was built by the first emperor to exploit the source. Seraphina has been fighting the cage without knowing the cage's full purpose. "Will Seraphina believe the coordinator? The coordinator is the cage-keeper. Why would Seraphina believe the cage-keeper's account of the cage?"

"Because the source confirmed it. The source does not lie. The source showed me its history — biological, physical, verifiable. Sable can examine the source's tissue layers. The confirmation is biological evidence from a living thing, not the coordinator's word."

The riders entered Valor's Hold at sunset. The city was clean, organized, the streets planned with the precision that characterized everything Seraphina built. The citizens moved with the purposeful gait of people who believed in their institutions. The belief was visible — maintained buildings, functioning markets, children in school uniforms.

The coordinator had arrived. The negotiation was tomorrow.
