Huo Sining’s expression kept shifting, her gaze piercing through the rock layers, staring straight at the half-mermaid trapped inside.

It was a female mer, her looks actually very gorgeous; if not for those eyes full of resentment and hatred, just that face alone would be enough to bewitch people.

Huo Sining actually didn’t know much about half-mermaids, but because of Liang Ruining and her grandmother Huang Chengxiang, she still had a certain fondness for them—especially when she guessed that this half-mermaid might have been trapped here for nearly a thousand years. No matter how you think about it, that was far too pitiful. Since Huo Sining had encountered her, she felt there was no way she could just stand by and do nothing.

After all, she was here with Zhou Shitao participating in the archaeological excavation of the ancient tomb. With that thought, Huo Sining no longer cared about anything else. She directly said a quick goodbye to Zhou Shitao and then withdrew herself out of the tomb.

Since Huo Sining had already mentioned earlier that she wasn’t feeling well, when she suddenly left the tomb like that, the staff members didn’t suspect anything.

Zhou Shitao even suggested asking Director He to contact the medical team to check on Huo Sining, in case she’d inhaled some miasma or something.

Huo Sining wouldn’t dare let Zhou Shitao really call in a doctor. If a doctor came to examine her, wouldn’t she give herself away?

So she hurriedly refused Zhou Shitao’s suggestion and explained to him:

"You know I studied medicine myself, I almost went to Yulong Mountain to sit in clinic. People say a doctor doesn’t treat herself, but I still know exactly what’s going on with me. Don’t worry about it for nothing!"

Zhou Shitao recalled how Huo Sining had once cured Huang Chengyi and Chief Lu’s grandson, and had personally gone to the earthquake zone to aid in rescue. Someone that even the experts of Yulong Mountain’s medical department praised highly—Zhou Shitao understood that the doctors they’d invited here to Luofu Mountain probably weren’t as skilled as this little girl.

Thinking that, he didn’t insist anymore, just told Huo Sining to go outside and rest properly, and to come back down when he had news.

When Huo Sining came out of the tomb, Su Qingqing immediately came over, wanting to chat with her:

"Ningning, did you touch that garment inside the tomb? Do you think it’s really like Director Huang said, Jiaoxiao? Could there really be Jiaoren..."

Huo Sining’s mind was full of that half-mermaid, she had no mood to chat. She simply waved her hand, saying she felt unwell inside and needed to go down the mountain to walk around and get some air.

Seeing this, Su Qingqing noticed that Huo Sining’s face did look a bit off. She instantly grew nervous and worried: "Do you want me to go with you? Are you okay?"

Huo Sining shook her head, indicating she was fine, then walked straight down the mountain without looking back.

Su Qingqing followed a few steps, then seemed to think of something, hesitated, and turned back to continue staring at that display screen.

The Luofu Mountain Ancient Tomb was located in a remote area to begin with. Huo Sining had already discovered when she entered the tomb that her phone had no signal at all, so she had to leave the tomb. She walked all the way out of the mountains and down to the Scenic Area’s paved stone road at the foot of the mountain before she finally got a single bar of signal.

She quickly sent Gu Xu a text message: I’m at Luofu Mountain. Bring Qibao over for me, I’ve run into a special situation and may need his help.

Gu Xu was in the Magic Capital taking care of the kid. When he received the message from his wife, he reacted very quickly and immediately called her: "What happened? Are you in any danger?"

Huo Sining’s gaze fell on the group of armed police standing ramrod straight at the foot of the mountain. She hesitated for a moment, then could only explain vaguely:

"I’m fine. It’s just a special situation, not something I can explain clearly in a few words. Bring him over first, then we’ll talk."

Hearing that his wife wasn’t in danger, Gu Xu immediately relaxed. He didn’t keep asking about what special situation it was and simply said: "Alright, wait for me at Luofu Mountain. I’ll come find you right away!"

Huo Sining never doubted that Gu Xu was reliable when it came to getting things done.

Just as she expected, archaeological work isn’t like other engineering projects; its progress isn’t something people can control. There weren’t many items in the Auricle Chamber, but it was still enough to keep the archaeological team busy for most of the day.

By the time the Auricle Chamber was cleared, it was already past eight in the evening.

Although Zhou Shitao was a workaholic, he also understood that excavating an ancient tomb isn’t short-term work. You can’t work yourself to death, skipping food and sleep; if everyone really worked without eating or drinking, no one could stand it. So he waved his hand and said they should eat and rest first and continue tomorrow.

The main burial chamber and the Burial Pit were no small matter. When everyone heard they could rest, they cheered, then each returned to their camp tents to wash up before going down to the Luofu Mountain Scenic Area’s cafeteria to eat.

When Huo Sining came out of the cafeteria, a young guard came trotting up to her and said:

"Miss Huo, Young Master Gu is here. He’s gone up the mountain now; someone’s taking them over to your tent."

Huo Sining wasn’t surprised. She nodded to show she understood, then, under Su Qingqing’s exaggerated winks and teasing look, walked back toward the camp without so much as glancing sideways.

Su Qingqing assumed Gu Xu had missed his wife so much that he’d rushed over thousands of miles from the Magic Capital to chase her, so she considerately decided not to stick to Huo Sining, instead finding an excuse to go chat with other members of the archaeological team.

Of course Huo Sining was more than happy about that. Taking advantage of the fact that Su Qingqing wasn’t going back to the tent for the moment, she hurried up the mountain, wanting to explain everything about the tomb while she had this window of time. Otherwise, once that girl Su Qingqing came in, she’d lose the chance to talk.
