Reborn as Eren Yeager: The Gacha System
Chapter 88: What Breaks and What Holds
By the twentieth day of training, the sessions had grown longer, steadier, the four of them learning the particular rhythm of holding a bond that channeled grief and fear and hard-won resilience without being swept under by any of it.
Then, on the twenty-first day, something went wrong.
"Again," Historia said, watching the stone pulse faint gold in the center of their circle. "Longer this time. Two minutes."
The connection opened the way it always did now — familiar, almost comfortable, Ymir’s presence settling into the shared space between them like an old friend’s voice. Thirty seconds in, everything felt stable.
Then the stone flared, and something else came through with it.
Not Ymir’s memory. Something older. Something that didn’t belong to any of them.
Eren felt it first — a vast, formless hunger, ancient and untethered, bleeding faintly through the practice bond like static catching a distant signal. Not the Anchorless power itself, not yet, but an echo of it, drawn perhaps by the ritual’s rehearsal, testing the boundaries of a binding not yet fully formed.
"Something’s wrong," he gasped, and felt Mikasa’s grip tighten beside him, her own face gone pale.
"I feel it too," she said. "It’s not her. It’s—"
"Break the connection!" Historia’s voice cut sharp through the clearing, and Annie was already pulling back, severing the bond hard enough that all four of them staggered, gasping, the phantom hunger fading as quickly as it had arrived.
Ymir collapsed to her knees, shaking. "That wasn’t part of the exercise."
"No," Historia said grimly, kneeling beside her, checking her pulse with practiced hands. "That was the Anchorless entity itself, reaching across the distance the moment it sensed a binding ritual being rehearsed. It’s closer than my estimates suggested. Or more aware than any prior binding target in recorded history."
[System alert: Anchorless entity detected reaching toward practice ritual. Estimated distance recalculated: 61 days, not 90. Threat awareness confirmed — entity is not purely instinctual. Recommend accelerated preparation.]
"Sixty-one days," Armin said slowly, doing the grim math. "That’s a third less time than we planned for."
Ymir refused to stop training, despite Historia’s obvious concern, despite Annie’s fierce insistence that they slow down and reconsider the entire approach.
"It felt me," Ymir said, still shaking hours later, wrapped in a blanket near the fire while the others debated around her. "I don’t know how, across whatever distance separates us, but it felt me reaching toward the binding, and it wanted something. Not mindless hunger. Actual, directed want."
"Wanted what?" Eren asked.
"I don’t know. But it wasn’t trying to destroy me. It was trying to—" she struggled for the word, "—recruit me. Like it recognized what I was about to become and thought that made me something worth claiming instead of consuming."
The room went very quiet.
"That changes things," Historia said finally, voice tight. "If it’s capable of that kind of directed intent, the binding ritual becomes more dangerous, not less. It won’t simply resist capture. It might actively try to turn the vessel into an extension of itself instead."
"Then we need better anchors," Mikasa said immediately. "Stronger. If it’s smart enough to target Ymir specifically, we need to be certain our bond can actually hold against something that’s fighting back with intent, not just raw force."
[Recommendation: Increase anchor count from 3 to 5. Additional viable candidates detected: Reiner Braun (compatibility: moderate), Armin Arlert (compatibility: low, compensated by exceptional mental discipline).]
"Me?" Armin looked startled, though something determined settled quickly into his expression. "I’m not exactly known for combat resilience."
"This isn’t combat," Historia said. "It’s endurance of a different kind. Your discipline, the way you approach problems methodically instead of emotionally — that might matter more here than raw compatibility numbers suggest."
Armin was quiet a moment, weighing it, before nodding once, firm. "Then I’m in. Whatever this actually requires."
Reiner, arriving in time to catch the tail end of the conversation, didn’t hesitate either. "Same. I’ve spent two years trying to make up for what I did as Marley’s weapon. If standing as an anchor for this helps balance that, I’ll take the risk."
The expanded circle trained differently — five now instead of three, each bringing something distinct to the bond: Eren’s stubborn resolve, Mikasa’s fierce protectiveness, Annie’s hard-won understanding of her sister’s pain, Armin’s careful, steady discipline, Reiner’s guilt-driven determination to finally give something back instead of taking.
[Anchor Synchronization: Session 1 (expanded circle) — Duration achieved: 90 seconds. Stability projection: 74%. Improvement rate accelerated with additional anchors.]
"It’s working," Historia said, genuine surprise coloring her voice as she monitored the readings. "Five distinct bonds, each different, but somehow reinforcing each other instead of fragmenting the connection. I haven’t seen anything like this in any historical record."
"Maybe that’s the difference," Eren said, exhausted but hopeful. "Every prior binding probably used anchors who were assigned, not chosen. We’re not just compatible on paper. We actually trust each other."
That night, with sixty-one days shrinking rapidly and the stakes now clearer and more dangerous than anyone had initially understood, Eren found the whole group gathered around the fire instead of scattered to their separate rests — an unspoken decision that tonight, at least, none of them wanted to be alone with the weight of what they’d learned.
"We’re really doing this," Ymir said quietly, looking around the circle of people who’d chosen, one by one, to stand beside her against something ancient and hungry and aware. "All of you. For me."
"For all of us," Mikasa corrected gently. "This was never just about you carrying the risk alone, Ymir. That’s the whole point of what we’re building here."
Eren looked around the fire — Mikasa’s hand steady in his, Armin’s notebook finally set aside for the night, Reiner and Annie sitting closer together than either might have predicted a year before, Ymir’s exhausted but resolute expression reflecting firelight — and felt something settle in his chest that no system notification could have granted him.
[Party status: 6 members. Bond stability: Rising. Threat clock: 61 days.]
"Sixty-one days," he said aloud. "We use every single one of them properly this time. Together."
Around the fire, five voices answered in quiet, unshaken agreement, and above them, the autumn stars wheeled on, indifferent to the small, fierce alliance forming beneath them against a darkness that had, for the first time in its long, hungry existence, encountered something it hadn’t expected.
People who chose each other, deliberately, before the fight ever demanded it of them.
