Reborn as Eren Yeager: The Gacha System

Chapter 106: The Second Binding

Dawn broke pale and cold over the research facility’s overgrown courtyard, the six anchors taking their positions around the cracked containment chamber Historia’s team had spent the night carefully preparing for transfer.

[Ritual sequence: Beginning. Anchor positions confirmed. Bond activation available.]

Eren knelt at the circle’s center, the residual Founder resonance humming faintly through the ground beneath him, ancient and unstable and waiting.

"Ready?" Historia asked, her voice carrying the same careful weight it had held years before, at a different ritual, for a different vessel.

"Ready," Eren confirmed, meeting Mikasa’s eyes across the circle, finding in them the same fierce, steady certainty that had anchored him through every impossible thing this second life had demanded.

The bond opened easily this time, six presences weaving together with a familiarity built from years of trust rather than weeks of hurried training — Mikasa’s fierce love, Armin’s careful discipline, Annie’s hard-won understanding, Reiner’s determined redemption, Zeke’s guilt-driven resolve to finally set right what he’d once left carelessly unfinished.

I’m here, Eren said into the shared space. All of you, with me. Same as always.

[Ritual sequence: 20% complete. Stability holding at 96%.]

The chamber cracked fully open at the ritual’s midpoint, releasing eight years of unstable, cultivated resonance in a violent wave that staggered the entire circle, ancient power flooding toward Eren with a hunger that felt different from the Anchorless entity’s calculated manipulation — cruder, more chaotic, like something that had never developed enough coherence to want anything specific beyond simple, desperate release.

It’s not trying to bargain, Eren realized, the pressure building fast and dangerous in his chest. It’s just trying to escape, however it can.

"Hold steady!" Historia shouted over the rising wind, the ritual’s ancient words rising in careful, practiced cadence despite the chaos building around them. "The vessel needs to actively receive it, not simply resist!"

Eren forced himself to stop fighting the pressure and instead, deliberately, opened himself fully to it — the way he’d learned, slowly and carefully, to open himself to every hard truth this life had eventually demanded he face.

[Ritual sequence: 55% complete. Warning: Vessel strain increasing. Anchor bond critical.]

The chaotic resonance surged harder, and Eren felt something inside him strain toward breaking, old fear and fresh determination warring as the raw power sought purchase, desperate and directionless.

You’re not going to consume anything, he said, projecting the thought as much to himself as to the ancient, chaotic force flooding through him. You’re going to settle. Properly, this time. Contained, not by force stolen from you, but by someone actually choosing to hold you steady.

The chaos shuddered, something almost like recognition rippling through it — not intelligence exactly, but the faint, distant echo of intent, buried deep beneath years of unstable neglect.

[Ritual sequence: 78% complete. Vessel strain critical. Anchor bond holding at 91% (decreased from initial 96%).]

"Something’s wrong," Mikasa shouted, her grip on Eren’s hand tightening as his body began convulsing under the strain. "The bond’s weakening!"

"It’s fighting the binding harder than Ymir’s entity did," Historia called back, her own composure fraying. "It never had a proper shape to begin with. It doesn’t know how to be contained gently!"

Then I don’t contain it gently, Eren thought, desperate resolve crystallizing through the pain. I give it what it never had in the first place. Direction.

He pushed, not against the chaos this time, but through it, offering it the shape of his own memories — the garden, Carla’s laughter, Mikasa’s steady presence through every hard year, the treaty’s fragile peace slowly, carefully built. Not asking the chaos to become him, but showing it, directly, what shape a properly anchored existence could actually look like.

[Ritual sequence: 90% complete. Vessel strain: Extreme. Recommend immediate anchor reinforcement.]

"Now!" Armin shouted, and all six anchors pushed forward at once, their combined bond flooding into the ritual’s final surge, years of hard-won trust and love channeled directly into the desperate, faltering connection.

The chaos finally, fully yielded.

Eren collapsed forward, gasping, the ritual’s aftermath leaving him hollowed out and exhausted in a way that dwarfed even the binding for Ymir years before.

"Eren!" Mikasa was at his side instantly, checking him with frantic, practiced hands. "Eren, stay with me—"

"I’m here," he managed, voice hoarse. "It’s — it’s quiet now. Different from before. Not just contained. It actually... settled."

[Ritual "The Sixth Vessel" — COMPLETE. Entity bound and stabilized. Host: Eren Yeager. Status: Critical but stable. Recommend extended recovery period.]

"He needs rest," Historia said, already directing the group toward proper medical care. "This binding cost more than Ymir’s did — the chaos had no prior coherence to work with. He’ll need weeks, possibly months, to fully recover his strength."

They carried him carefully back to the facility’s upper levels, the whole exhausted, victorious group finally allowed to breathe once the immediate crisis had passed.

Three days later, still weak but steadily improving, Eren woke to find Carla sitting beside his cot, small hand wrapped fiercely around his, clearly having refused to leave despite everyone’s gentle attempts to send her to rest.

"You came back," she said, voice thick with relief. "Different, maybe. But you came back."

"I promised I would," Eren said, weak but genuinely smiling. "However this turned out."

"Mom told me what happened. About the chaos not knowing how to be anything except lost, until you showed it what being found actually looked like." Carla studied him with the particular seriousness she’d inherited from both her parents. "Is that what you do, Dad? Show scary things how to become less scary?"

Eren considered the question carefully, the weight of an entire war’s philosophy distilled down into a ten-year-old’s earnest curiosity. "I think that’s what all of us try to do, in our own way. Your mother taught me that, a long time ago. Sometimes the scariest things just need someone patient enough to show them a better shape to become."

[System notification: No mechanical relevance. Filed simply because it matters — Carla Yeager, understanding her family’s legacy in her own words.]

Weeks later, once Eren had recovered enough to walk properly through their garden again, Mikasa found him standing before the pale, hardy flowers, testing the new, quiet resonance settled now alongside everything else he carried.

"How does it feel?" she asked. "Different, this time?"

"Quieter than I expected," Eren admitted. "Less like carrying a weapon, more like carrying a very confused, very lost piece of something that finally found somewhere to belong." He looked at her, exhaustion and hard-won peace tangling together in his tired expression. "Fourteen sites. We’re up to six confirmed, five children needing support, one dangerous echo finally properly settled. However many remain, I think we’re actually getting better at this. Not faster. Better."

[Mission "Echoes of the War" — Progress: 6/14 sites confirmed. Overall project status: Sustainable, ongoing. No forced urgency.]

"Better," Mikasa agreed, leaning into him as the pale flowers swayed in the afternoon breeze. "The way everything worth doing eventually becomes, once you stop rushing toward it and start actually building it properly instead."

He kissed the top of her head, watching Carla chase Tobias through the garden rows nearby, two children who understood, each in their own careful way, exactly what kind of world their parents were still patiently, deliberately trying to build.

Eight sites remained. However long that search took, Eren understood now, with hard-won certainty, that they would face each one exactly the way they’d learned to face everything worth facing.

Slowly. Together. And always, always, choosing understanding over fear.
