Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat
Chapter 232 — Not Done Yet
Chapter 232: Chapter 232 — Not Done Yet
He spent one more day at the ruin’s edge, mostly out of simple curiosity rather than any real purpose, and found the clearing’s far side opening into a stretch of pillar field considerably sparser than what he’d already crossed — the structure, whatever it had once been, apparently tapering off rather than continuing indefinitely.
That’s probably the shape of it, then. A proper edge, not just more of the same stretching on forever.
He pushed past the sparse stretch regardless, curious to confirm it, and found the terrain shifting gradually back into ordinary, unworked cavern floor within the hour — the ruin’s boundary marked almost as cleanly as a line drawn on a map.
A Cave Shark tested him near the transition, more out of territorial instinct than any real threat, and he ended the exchange cleanly before continuing on.
He reached what he judged to be Floor Fifteen’s own far edge by midafternoon, the terrain opening into a vast, dark stretch of open water that promised, from what little he could make out, something considerably different from anything Region III had offered so far — colder, deeper, the pressure against his skin noticeably heavier even with Water Armor’s steady protection.
Floor Sixteen, probably. Or whatever comes next.
He stood at the threshold a long while, genuinely tempted, the same old curiosity that had carried him through every deliberate stage of this journey pulling at him now with real insistence.
Not today, though.
He turned the thought over carefully, weighing it the honest way he weighed every real decision. He hadn’t been down here nearly as long as it felt. A month, give or take, since he’d first swum past Floor Ten’s ramp — far short of the two he’d actually given himself for this whole trip.
Plenty of time left. No reason to push into something new on a whim when I could go back, rest properly, and come at it fresh instead.
He turned back without any particular regret attached to it, the decision settling into place the same unhurried way most of his real choices did.
The journey back through Fifteen passed quickly, the ground thoroughly familiar now, and he crossed the pillar field’s full length in a single day rather than the careful, exploratory pace he’d set on the way in.
Fourteen’s kelp forest took a day and a half, the heat vent’s strange, pleasant warmth greeting him briefly as he passed near its edge, and he found himself smiling at the memory of Magma Touch’s discovery even as he left the vent itself behind.
Thirteen’s maze tunnels passed in a single day now, the passages settled firmly enough into memory that he barely needed the guild map at all, consulting it only once at a junction he’d somehow managed to forget.
Twelve’s lake greeted him with its familiar, calm expanse, and he stopped at the waystation this time, genuinely wanting a proper rest before pushing on.
"Back through already," the innkeeper said, settling his modest fee. "Didn’t expect you quite this soon."
"Reached Fifteen’s far edge. Figured I’d come back, rest properly, before deciding what’s next."
"Smart. Most people either push past their limit or stop too early. Not many manage the middle of that." The innkeeper studied him a moment, the same careful, practiced assessment he always offered. "You’re carrying yourself different than even your last pass through. Steadier."
"Feels that way too."
He ate well, slept properly, and pressed on the following morning through Eleven’s open kelp forest, the stretch where he’d once nearly died passing beneath him now with nothing more than a brief, quiet acknowledgment.
Still remember exactly where it happened. Doesn’t carry the same weight anymore, though.
He reached Floor Ten’s ramp by evening, the settlement’s warm, impossible light greeting him with the same strange comfort it always offered, and made his way to the market first, same as every previous visit, selling off the accumulated weight of weeks’ worth of materials he hadn’t yet bothered unloading.
The merchant who handled his sale whistled low at the scale of it.
"You’ve been busy," she said, working through Stonebound Veil’s source creature’s plating with obvious interest. "Haven’t seen this material before. Where’s this from?"
"Floor Fifteen. Past the pillar ruins."
"Huh. Not many venture that far in solo." She counted out a generous sum, the final total considerably more than any previous visit had offered. "Good trip, it sounds like."
"Good trip. Not finished yet, though."
He ate at his usual stall, the vendor greeting him with the same easy recognition, and found a room at the inn for a proper night’s rest, no particular hurry pressing him toward anything.
He spent the following day simply resting, restocking a few supplies that had thinned, and stopped by the guild outpost to add a brief note about the pillar ruins to the existing record, confirming what he’d half-suspected — the clearing was already documented, loosely, though his own account filled in detail nobody had apparently bothered gathering in years.
"Good addition," the clerk said, reviewing it. "Most reports on that site are decades old. Good to have something current."
He thought, settling back at the inn that evening, about how much of the two months he’d actually used. Not even half of it, by his own honest reckoning — plenty of floor still worth seeing, plenty of strength still worth earning before he called this particular stretch finished.
Home’s waiting. It’ll still be waiting in a few more weeks.
He wrote briefly that night, mostly practical.
Reached Floor Fifteen’s far edge, confirmed something considerably larger waits past it. Turned back deliberately — not out of fear, just good pacing. Plenty of trip left. I’ll rest here, then head back down and keep working these floors properly before I even think about the climb home.
He closed the journal, and let the settlement’s familiar, warm quiet settle around him, content with how the trip had unfolded so far, and genuinely looking forward, with the same patient curiosity that had carried him through every deliberate stage of this life, to however many more cycles between Floor Ten and the depths below still waited before this particular Chapter of his journey properly closed.
