Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat
Chapter 229 — What Fourteen Still Hides
Chapter 229: Chapter 229 — What Fourteen Still Hides
He spent the following days pushing deeper into Floor Fourteen’s kelp forest, the terrain proving considerably larger than either Eleven or Thirteen had suggested it might be.
The second day started with a stretch of open water where the kelp thinned, and he found himself grateful for the visibility after so much dense, tangled growth. A pod of River Titan Toads crossed his path there, five strong, their water-pressure attacks forcing him to work for every exchange — Steadfast Guard absorbing what Water Armor’s thickened layer couldn’t quite catch, Riverblade and Lightning Strike finishing them one by one as they overextended.
He cleared them without much drama, satisfied rather than exhausted, and pressed on.
A cluster of Crystal Jellyfish drifted through a narrow channel not long after, their paralytic sting more nuisance than threat now that he understood their patterns properly. He bypassed most of them, clearing only the two blocking his direct path, and saved the effort for whatever else the floor had waiting.
It was late on the third day, exploring a stretch of terrain the guild maps left almost entirely blank, that he found something genuinely new.
The kelp opened into a wide, circular clearing, the water here notably warmer than the surrounding current, a faint mineral scent carrying through it that reminded him, distantly, of the Ashen Frontier’s old volcanic soil.
Odd. Heat, this deep in flooded terrain. Where’s that coming from?
He explored the clearing’s edges carefully, and found the source near its far side — a cluster of jagged, dark stone formations jutting from the lakebed, faint threads of warmth visibly rising from cracks between them like something breathing slow and patient beneath the rock.
Some kind of vent. Didn’t expect that down here.
He approached cautiously, and the water around the formations shivered with sudden, violent movement as something large erupted from a gap between two stones — a creature he didn’t recognize at all, serpentine but considerably bulkier than anything he’d fought so far, its hide a deep, mottled red-black that seemed to pulse faintly with the same warmth radiating from the vents themselves.
New. Properly new. Haven’t seen anything like this on any guild record.
It struck fast, and he barely cleared the first attack, Storm Step carrying him clear by a margin thin enough that he felt the displaced heat roll past him even through the water’s cooling press.
That’s not cold-blooded, whatever it is. That’s actual heat, carried in the body itself.
He circled wide, studying it properly before committing to anything, and the creature tracked him with an unsettling, deliberate patience, the water around it visibly warmer wherever it passed.
He opened with Tidal Lance, curious how it would respond, and the bolt struck true but seemed to simply dissipate against its hide rather than wound it properly, the heat radiating from its scales apparently boiling away the water’s cutting edge before it could do real damage.
Water’s not the answer here. Different creature, different weakness.
He switched tactics, calling Emberstorm instead, half-expecting the fire to simply feed whatever strange heat the creature already carried.
It didn’t. The compressed sphere struck and the creature recoiled, a genuine hiss of distress rather than mere irritation, and Arlen understood, watching the reaction, that whatever gave it that internal warmth clearly didn’t extend to actually welcoming more of it from outside.
Interesting. Carries heat, doesn’t like receiving it. Noted.
He pressed the advantage, Bulwark Strike driving a current-formed spike into the same wounded flank, and the creature thrashed hard enough to stir the whole clearing’s silt into a cloud that briefly swallowed his vision entirely.
He fell back on Shadow Sense, trusting the ability’s quiet awareness of movement and presence to track it through the murk, and caught its next strike a half-second before it would have landed, Water Armor absorbing the worst of the glancing blow.
He finished it a few exchanges later, Lightning Strike finding a clean opening once the silt cloud settled enough to properly see, and stood over the fallen creature a long while, genuinely fascinated by what he’d just fought.
Something that lives near heat vents, this deep underwater. I don’t think the guild knows this exists.
He harvested carefully, curious about the meat, and made camp near the clearing’s warm, strange edge rather than retreating to cooler water, the vents’ gentle heat actually pleasant against the cold that usually settled into his bones after a long day’s diving.
The warmth arrived partway through his meal, different from anything he’d felt before — not the sharp, familiar gather of fire, not water’s cool, patient weight, but something dense and radiant, settling deep into his chest like banked coals rather than open flame.
A name surfaced.
Magma Touch.
He sat with it a long moment, testing the understanding bundled alongside the name — a controlled, internal heat he could channel through his own body or weapon, considerably more intense and sustained than Emberstorm’s quick, gathered bursts, built for enduring pressure rather than a single decisive strike.
He tested it cautiously against a nearby stone, and watched the surface actually begin to glow faintly where his palm rested, heat radiating outward in a steady, patient wave rather than any sudden release.
Different flavor of fire. Not an attack exactly. More like — carrying the heat itself, the way that creature did.
He reached inward, curious, and found it sitting apart from Emberstorm entirely, a new voice rather than an addition to the existing well — different enough in nature that he suspected, turning the thought over carefully, it might need its own separate path eventually rather than simply joining what already existed.
Something for later. Plenty of time to figure out where it belongs.
He wrote briefly before sleep, genuinely pleased with the discovery.
Found something new near a heat vent deep in Floor Fourteen — a creature the guild clearly hasn’t documented, and an ability unlike anything fire’s given me before. Magma Touch. Sustained heat rather than a burst. I should report the vent itself properly once I’m back at Ten; feels like the kind of thing worth having on record.
He closed the journal, the vent’s gentle warmth settling comfortably around his small camp, and let sleep take him slowly, already thinking, with the same patient curiosity that had carried him through every deliberate stage of this life, about how much more of this floor — and whatever strange, unrecorded corners it still held — remained for him to properly discover.
