Chapter 1773: Chapter 1326: Am I Obligated to Do This?
Xu Chunxia heard Mrs. Xu’s words from inside the room, and finally felt a bit better. She was eager for Mrs. Xu to go make trouble for Kang Li—best if she could scratch Kang Li’s face, so she could vent the anger in her heart.
...
Kang family.
"Is this the child?"
Cai Xiufang saw Kang Li walk into the door holding Xiao Yuhang, and asked gently.
Kang Li nodded: "I’ll go get a basin of warm water to wash the child up, and then help him change clothes."
The room was heated with a kang bed and connected to the radiator pipes, so it wasn’t cold at all. You could sit there in just a thin sweater and wouldn’t freeze.
Kang Li put Xiao Yuhang down on the kang, then left the room. Soon after, she came back carrying a big basin of warm water.
"Come here, Auntie will help you get nice and clean."
Kang Li reached out her hand, smiling at Xiao Yuhang.
"Thank you, Auntie!"
Xiao Yuhang was a little shy, but he was a polite kid.
As time passed bit by bit, Kang Li quickly washed the little guy up. Even though it wasn’t cold in the room, it was the middle of winter outside, so better to be quick so the kid wouldn’t catch a chill.
She changed him into a full set of Bun’s clothes. They were a bit too big, but with base layers inside and a sweater over the top, there was no need to worry about drafts at all. As for the jacket, she rolled up the sleeves and pant legs—turned out it actually looked quite a good fit.
"Yuhang, come here, sit by Sister, and I’ll tell you a story."
This was Guoguo’s voice. She and Bun and Tangyuan were all sitting on the kang. The little girl blinked her big, grape-like eyes, waving to call Xiao Yuhang over.
"Okay!"
Xiao Yuhang answered, then took little steps onto the soft quilts, and sat down next to Guoguo.
"Yuhang, Brother Tangyuan can tell stories too!"
Tangyuan joined in the fun.
Bun just sat there in the covers, calm as ever, holding a book and reading.
"Are this child’s family coming today, do you think?"
Cai Xiufang glanced at Xiao Yuhang and asked Kang Li.
"They must be in a rush to find him. Now that there’s news, I’m sure they’ll fly over."
Kang Li said as she picked up the basin, getting ready to pour out the water. At that moment, Min Rui came in: "Mom, let me do it."
"No need."
Kang Li shook her head.
But Min Rui still took the basin from her hands.
"Big brother, where are Bun and the others?"
At the door, Min Wei asked Min Rui.
"Sitting on the kang."
Min Rui replied, then carried the basin out to the front yard.
"No more homework?"
Kang Li smiled and asked when she saw Min Wei come in.
"I just finished English. I’ll do math tomorrow."
All the teachers gave a huge pile of winter break homework, but Min Wei wasn’t fazed by it at all.
"Your second brother—I don’t know who he learned it from—now that he’s back in the village, he actually likes to do homework at night."
Kang Li muttered.
Min Wei laughed: "My second brother says it’s quiet at night, doing homework feels better."
Kang Li: "Is it really that noisy at home during the day?"
"I don’t think it’s noisy at all, but what goes on in my second brother’s head, only he knows."
As she spoke, Min Wei took off her shoes and climbed onto the kang, sitting down next to Cai Xiufang. She asked Kang Li, "Mom, aren’t you coming up?"
"No."
Kang Li shook her head.
Just then, Mrs. Xu’s angry voice rang out from the yard: "Li Bao! Li Bao, you come out here—your aunt’s got something to ask you!"
"I’ll go take a look."
Kang Li said to Cai Xiufang, then stepped out of the room.
"It’s cold outside, Aunt Xu, come in and have a seat."
Walking out of the living room, Kang Li politely invited Mrs. Xu in. But Mrs. Xu didn’t appreciate it at all: "Your Kang family’s threshold is too high, I couldn’t possibly get over it. Let’s just talk right here."
Kang Li was speechless at that.
If her Kang family’s threshold was so high that people couldn’t get in, what exactly was Mrs. Xu now doing standing in their yard?
Kang Li grumbled internally, then heard Mrs. Xu ask: "When Chunxia left home that year, did she go straight to North City? And didn’t you run into her in North City more than once—isn’t that right?"
"Aunt Xu, for your first question, all I can say is I don’t know. After all, Xu Chunxia never told me where she was going—I’m not a mind reader. As for your second question, yes, I did run into Xu Chunxia more than once in North City. But what’s wrong with that?"
Kang Li didn’t need to think to know this was a trap laid by Xu Chunxia.
Since that’s the game, she might as well talk a bit more herself.
Mrs. Xu said, "Of course there’s something wrong. If you ran into my Chunxia, why didn’t you call our village and tell me and your Uncle Xu?"
"Was it my obligation?"
Kang Li’s tone was cold. She said, "Xu Chunxia and I aren’t friends anymore. I just happened to bump into her—why should I poke my nose in? Besides, in North City, Xu Chunxia had found herself a rich new mom. When she saw me, she didn’t just call herself Jiang Lei,
She said she wasn’t your or Uncle Xu’s daughter, and said you were just her foster parents, and that you’d never treated her well since she was little, and she didn’t want to have anything to do with you ever again. She told me to mind my own business, and as for who she was and her threats, I really didn’t care—but I knew better than to meddle, so I wouldn’t get myself into trouble."
