"The innate Frost Holy Physique I mentioned, have you taken it to heart?" the silver-haired fairy went on, returning to the point.

"I heard you."

She lowered her gaze and nodded faintly.

"That innate Frost Holy Physique is a holy relic of the moon goddess, the same root and origin as your Grand Yin Holy Physique and mine..."

The silver-haired fairy stood with her hands behind her back, her moon pupils fixed on the three thousand Daos, and went on in that cold, unfeeling voice. "If the chance ever comes, Nangong Xi, go and kill her and take the Holy Physique."

"But..."

She started to speak.

Yet the silver-haired fairy was still lost in her own world. "If we can reclaim the Frost Holy Physique lost to the Mortal Realm, then you and I will take another step towards reforging a true body of the ancient moon goddess!"

"But Yuyan is Yino’s Dao companion..."

Nangong Xi could no longer bear to listen, and refusal rose in her eyes.

She looked back on the memory and said coldly, "Back then, Yino spared me at the Dao Testing Pavilion. He did not take advantage of my weakness to wound my Dao body."

"He has shown me kindness. How could I repay it with malice and kill the one he loves?"

At that, she raised her head again and looked straight into the main body’s eyes.

Compared with those cold moon pupils brimming with divinity, her own eyes reflected the moon’s mark as well, yet they were mixed with endless, clear-cut love and hate.

The silver moon fairy sighed, a flash of resignation in her eyes.

"Do you know why, all those years ago, the silver moon goddess split this soul of yours from her own being as the avatar body and sent it to be reborn in the mortal world? Why she left all her cultivation and Fortune to me, and had me dwell alone in the Immortal Realm to comprehend the Dao?"

Nangong Xi said nothing, only glared at her with a resolve she had never shown before.

The silver moon fairy smiled faintly, contempt reflected in her eyes. "Because only by stripping away the weak and indecisive part that is you could the main body truly rise above the human world and draw closer to godhood."

"Is that so..."

Her pupils shook violently at the words, but after a moment’s reflection she was almost driven to bitter laughter. "By your reasoning, then, I dragged the silver moon goddess down. My very existence is a sin, and I ought to cut my own throat here and now?"

"Think what you like. I act only for our shared interest. You should understand which is more precious, the Frost Holy Physique the moon goddess left behind, or one mortal boy’s kindness!"

The silver-haired fairy did not spare her another look. She simply turned away and waved a hand.

Her spirit body slowly dissolved into moonlight and faded. Before she left, though, she glanced back at Nangong Xi with her moon pupils, a heavy meaning in the look.

"Avatar, let me give you one more word of warning."

"Even if you and I share one soul, should your human weakness lead you to betray the shared interest of the Moon Cult, then I, as the holy maiden of the Moon Cult, will not be soft-hearted about cleaning house."

The silver moon fairy’s spirit body scattered.

Nangong Xi stood alone in the Sacred Ground of the First Moon.

Defiance surfaced in her eyes, and her jade hand clenched quietly beneath her sleeve. But just then, from outside the Qing Palace came the hurried footsteps of a young girl.

"Sister, Young master He Yino came to visit just now!"

"Where is he?" Her eyes went wide as she turned around.

Outside the palace gate, a silver-haired girl stood with a letter clutched to her chest, her small face puffing up in a wronged pout under her sister’s scrutiny.

"Young master... he’s already left..."

"Left?"

Nangong Xi raised a brow.

Nangong Li grew flustered and hurried to explain.

"There was nothing I could do! I tried to keep him here for you, Sister. I told him you were in seclusion, asked him to sit at the manor and have some tea while I went to ask whether you’d see him..."

"But he seemed very busy. When he heard you were in seclusion, he left a letter for me to give you, then got up and went..."

By the end Nangong Li let out a sigh, full of regret.

Nangong Xi turned it over in her mind, then reached out and took the letter from the girl’s arms. She broke the seal and began to read.

At the same time, something seemed to come to Nangong Li, and her eyes lit up as she gossiped.

"Speaking of which, Sister, when Young master Yino was leaving, I followed him out to see him off, and I actually saw Wen Ruzhi standing at the gate, holding a roasted sweet potato and waiting for him!"

"That little demoness from the Divine Abyss Gate, the one who kills without blinking and answers to no reason, actually out walking the streets with the man who humiliated her in front of everyone! Now that’s a ghost story!"

"?_?"

At those words, Nangong Xi still reading the letter, suddenly lifted her head and froze for a beat.

Confusion flickered in her moon pupils, but after a moment’s thought she guessed at something and clenched her teeth, tutting under her breath. "That’s a ruthless move from Wen Ruzhi. To lure Yino into the Divine Abyss Gate, she’d really sell her own body and stop at nothing..."

"Huh...?"

The silver-haired girl blinked, then her small face flushed red as her imagination filled in some hidden plot.

Nangong Xi sighed and tucked the letter away. "Still, it does suit Wen Ruzhi’s character."

"By the way, Sister, what did young master write in that letter?"

Nangong Li tilted her head.

Nangong Xi lowered her lashes. "Nothing much. Just an explanation that he hadn’t meant to humiliate me in the tournament... and that in two months, when the Ancient Ruins in the Northern Domain open, there may be an Opportunity there tied to the silver moon goddess’s holy relics."

As she read the last of it, the words the main body had spoken earlier rose again, unbidden, in her mind.

That was right.

As the avatar body, her main duty was to temper herself in the human world, but she also carried a secondary charge, to gather the moon goddess’s holy relics and inheritances scattered across the lands.

What truly puzzled her was that Yino had clearly been a complete stranger to her before, yet he somehow knew what she wanted, and was even willing to share the Opportunity with her so freely.

What was he really after?

Surely, he wasn’t so kind-hearted as to simply hand such an Opportunity to me for nothing?

"The Northern Domain..."

Nangong Li listened obediently, but unease crept over her small face. "But I’ve heard that the snowfield north of the Jianlan Sect was a god-slaying battlefield in the ancient age. Countless Opportunities and hidden treasures are buried there, yes, but many ancient great Monsters slumber there too. It’s dangerous beyond words! And that snowfield is sealed by blizzards year-round, a bitter, frozen land in the far north... Only for a stretch of time each year, when spring and summer come and the blizzards ease, do a few regions of the whole snowfield rarely open for Cultivators to set foot and explore..."

"To seek out the ancient holy relics the moon goddess left scattered, I’m afraid the few outer snow-boar grounds won’t be enough. You’d have to venture deeper into the Northbound Mountains..."

"Sister, do you really mean to go?"

By the end the girl pursed her small lips, her eyes full of reluctance.

Nangong Xi looked at her, and the heart that the main body had just scolded felt, for some reason, a wave of calm.

She smiled knowingly, stepped forward, and gently stroked her little sister’s cute face.

"Since he invited me in earnest, there must be a reason for it. And with such a once-in-a-thousand-years Opportunity right before me, what cause would I, the reincarnation of the moon goddess, have to shrink back today?"

"Then I’ll go too..."

"No, you stay behind in the Frost Palace and carry out the duties of Holy Maiden in my place."
