Chapter 41: Chapter 41:The Hunter in the Mist

Night came earlier than expected.

Dark clouds gathered above the valley, covering the moon and turning the settlement into a world of shadows. The wind carried fine snow across the ground, reducing visibility beyond the defensive wall to only a few dozen meters.

The Blackfangs doubled their guards.

Every hunter had been ordered to remain alert.

The cubs were kept inside the largest dens.

Even the elders stayed awake.

Nobody wanted to admit it, but fear had entered the settlement.

Ash lay beside Lyra inside the main den, listening to the wind outside.

He could hear the guards moving along the perimeter.

He could hear the occasional crack of branches.

He could hear the anxious breathing of the younger cubs.

Then he heard something else.

A soft whistle.

Ash opened his eyes.

It came from outside.

Three short notes.

Then silence.

He slowly stood.

Lyra looked at him.

"What is it?"

Ash did not answer immediately.

Something was wrong.

The sound had not come from any of the Blackfang guards.

Before he could move toward the entrance, a distant cry suddenly broke through the night.

"WATCH THE EASTERN SIDE!"

The settlement erupted into movement.

Hunters rushed toward the defensive wall.

Ash heard several sharp impacts from outside, followed by growls and the sound of something moving rapidly through the snow.

But there was no enormous roar.

No crushing footsteps.

No sign of the Guardian.

Whatever had entered the settlement was much smaller.

And much faster.

Rowan’s voice thundered through the darkness.

"Protect the dens! Keep the cubs inside!"

Ash remained near the entrance.

Then another shout came from the southern side.

"Two of them!"

The guards moved.

Ash caught a glimpse of dark shapes slipping between the trees.

They moved low to the ground, but their movements were coordinated.

One distracted a guard while another approached from the opposite direction.

They were not attacking randomly.

They were studying the defenses.

A hunter lunged at one of the figures.

The creature twisted away before the strike could land.

Another Blackfang attempted to intercept it.

The figure disappeared behind a tree.

Ash’s heart began pounding.

This was not an animal.

It was a hunt.

And the Blackfangs were the prey being studied.

Suddenly, a cry came from outside the western den.

Several younger cubs had become trapped when part of their shelter collapsed during the commotion.

Ash heard their frightened voices.

He looked toward the adults.

Everyone was already engaged in the defense.

Lyra grabbed his shoulder.

"Ash, don’t."

But he had already moved.

He ran through the snow.

Aren followed him immediately.

The two reached the damaged den and found four cubs huddled beneath a broken wooden beam.

"Stay calm," Ash told them.

The cubs were trembling.

Ash pushed against the beam while Aren used his claws to clear the snow and debris around them.

It took several seconds, but the opening became wide enough for the cubs to crawl through.

One by one, Ash guided them toward the safer part of the settlement.

Then Aren suddenly stopped.

Ash looked back.

The Silver Lynx was staring toward the ridge.

"What?"

Aren did not answer.

His body had become completely still.

Ash followed his gaze.

A figure stood on the distant ridge.

At first, the snowfall made it difficult to see.

Then lightning briefly illuminated the clouds.

Ash saw it clearly.

The creature was tall.

Not enormous like the Guardian.

Not shaped like an ordinary wolf or bear.

It stood upright on two legs, covered in dark fur that blended into the night. Pieces of pale bone armor covered its shoulders and chest, arranged not randomly but deliberately, as though they had been crafted for protection.

Its face was partially hidden beneath a dark hood.

But its eyes were visible.

Crimson.

Bright crimson.

They were not glowing like magical flames.

They were simply watching.

Studying.

Thinking.

Ash felt his entire body become cold.

The creature looked directly at him.

Then its mouth slowly curved upward.

It smiled.

There was nothing wild about the expression.

It was deliberate.

Almost amused.

Aren stepped forward and positioned himself between Ash and the stranger.

The creature tilted its head.

Then it spoke.

"So this is what the old Alpha left behind."

Ash froze.

The voice was deep and controlled.

It was the voice of something capable of thought, language, and patience.

The creature knew about the Alpha.

It knew about Ash.

Rowan suddenly appeared behind them.

"Ash!"

The moment he saw the creature, Rowan launched himself forward.

His claws struck toward its chest.

The creature moved.

Not backward.

Sideways.

The attack missed by less than an inch.

Rowan immediately struck again.

The creature ducked beneath the blow.

Another strike came from the opposite side.

Again, it avoided the attack.

It did not counter.

It did not even appear angry.

It was watching Rowan’s movements.

Learning them.

Rowan attacked faster.

The creature continued avoiding him.

Ash watched in disbelief.

Rowan was one of the strongest hunters in the entire settlement, yet the stranger moved as though the attacks were predictable.

Finally, Rowan stopped.

His breathing was heavy.

The creature remained untouched.

It looked at him almost sympathetically.

"You fight exactly as the old stories described."

Rowan’s eyes narrowed.

"What are you?"

The creature smiled again.

"You have not earned that answer."

Several dark figures appeared between the trees behind it.

There were at least five.

Perhaps more.

Ash could not determine their exact number through the snowfall.

They were all organized.

None approached the cubs.

None attacked the wounded.

Their targets had been the sentries and hunters.

That realization made Ash’s stomach tighten.

They had entered the settlement without intending to massacre it.

They had come for information.

The creature looked toward Ash once more.

Its crimson eyes seemed to examine him from head to toe.

Then it spoke slowly.

"Tell your elders that the Frostfang bloodline has been found."

Mira had arrived behind Rowan.

The moment she heard those words, she stopped.

Her face lost all color.

"Ash..."

The creature noticed her reaction.

For the first time, its smile disappeared.

It seemed satisfied.

It had confirmed something.

The next moment, the dark figures retreated into the forest.

Rowan wanted to pursue them.

Mira stopped him.

"No."

Rowan turned sharply.

"They’re getting away."

"That is exactly what they want."

Rowan stared at her.

Mira’s voice became quieter.

"They came here knowing our defenses. They knew where the hunters would stand. They knew which areas would cause the greatest confusion. If we follow them into the forest, we will be fighting on their ground."

Rowan reluctantly stopped.

The snow swallowed the strangers’ tracks within minutes.

The attack was over.

But the fear it had created remained.

Ash looked toward the forest.

The crimson eyes were gone.

Yet he could still feel them watching him.

---

The wounded hunters were treated before dawn.

Fortunately, none of the Blackfangs had been killed.

That fact should have brought relief.

Instead, it made everything worse.

The enemy could have killed them.

It had chosen not to.

Mira gathered the senior wolves inside the oldest surviving den.

Ash sat near the entrance.

Aren remained beside him.

Rowan stood near the center of the chamber, his expression hard.

"What were those things?"

Mira remained silent for several moments.

Finally, she looked toward Ash.

"There is something I should have told you much earlier."

Ash’s ears lifted.

"The ancient records contain references to a species that existed before the First Awakening. They were not ordinary predators, and they were not guardians."

"What were they?" Rowan asked.

Mira looked toward the darkness beyond the den.

"The Dreadborn."

The name seemed to carry weight inside the chamber.

Aren’s ears suddenly lifted.

"You know them?"

Mira looked at him.

"No. But your ancestors did."

Aren became still.

Mira continued.

"According to the oldest records, the Dreadborn believed that the ancient guardians had stolen something from them. Nobody knows exactly what that object was, but the conflict eventually spread across the mountains. Wolves, lynxes, bears, eagles, and several other species joined together against them."

She paused.

"The war ended with the Dreadborn defeated."

Rowan frowned.

"Defeated or destroyed?"

Mira’s eyes hardened.

"That is the problem."

She slowly looked at the blue relic hanging around Ash’s neck.

"The records never say they were destroyed."

Ash touched the relic.

It felt strangely warm.

"Then they survived?"

Mira nodded.

"Perhaps they did."

Ash stared at her.

"Why are they looking for me?"

Mira did not answer.

"Elder Mira."

She remained silent.

Ash’s voice became more serious.

"Why are they looking for me?"

Mira finally looked directly into his eyes.

"Because you’re carrying something they have been searching for longer than the Blackfang Pack has existed."

Ash’s paw slowly tightened around the relic.

"What?"

Mira’s eyes dropped toward it.

"I don’t know."

For the first time, Ash could hear uncertainty in her voice.

Then the relic moved.

A faint blue light passed through the stone.

Everyone in the chamber became silent.

The familiar blue symbol appeared across its surface.

But this time, something else formed inside it.

A thin red mark.

It slowly curved around the blue symbol until it became unmistakable.

A red eye.

The same red eye that had been carved into the tree.

Ash stared at it.

A cold sensation moved through his body.

Aren stepped backward.

"I saw that before."

Ash looked at him.

"Where?"

Aren’s eyes remained fixed on the relic.

"In my tribe."

Mira immediately turned toward him.

"What do you mean?"

Aren struggled to explain.

"Before we left."

He lowered his head.

"The elders found red marks."

The chamber became silent.

Aren looked toward Ash.

"They were afraid."

Ash felt his heart sink.

His connection to the ancient ruins.

The Guardian.

The Blackfang legacy.

The Silver Lynx tribe.

The broken pendant.

And now the Dreadborn.

All of them were beginning to form a single pattern.

But Ash still could not see the complete picture.

And perhaps that was what frightened him

Far beyond the Blackfang settlement, deep inside the mountains, several figures moved through the snow.

They traveled without torches.

Without speaking.

Their movements were silent and disciplined.

Eventually, they reached a ruined stone structure buried beneath centuries of ice.

The tallest figure entered first.

Inside, ancient pillars surrounded a circular chamber.

Broken carvings covered the walls.

At the center of the room stood a dark stone platform.

The creature lowered itself onto one knee.

For the first time, its confidence disappeared.

A voice came from the darkness beyond the platform.

"Did you find the heir?"

The Dreadborn lowered its head.

"Yes."

A long silence followed.

Then the unseen voice asked another question.

"The Guardian?"

The creature’s crimson eyes narrowed.

A faint smile appeared on its face.

"Awake."

The chamber became completely silent.

Then the voice answered.

"Good."

The Dreadborn remained kneeling.

No celebration followed.

No command to attack was given.

Instead, the unseen presence spoke quietly.

"Do not kill the heir."

The creature looked up.

The order seemed almost strange.

"Why?"

The darkness remained motionless.

"Because he is the key."

The Dreadborn’s smile returned.

"And the key must remain alive."

Outside the ruins, the wind screamed across the mountains.

Far away, beneath Moonveil, something shifted beneath the ancient seal.

The blue crystals trembled.

The Guardian had awakened.

The Dreadborn had returned.

And Ash had unknowingly become the bridge between them.

For the first time since his journey began, the danger was no longer approaching from the darkness.

It had already found him.
