Reborn as a Snow Wolf: My Bloodline Ancestor System
Chapter 33 : The Stranger in the Storm
Chapter 33: Chapter 33 : The Stranger in the Storm
The morning after the three mysterious knocks, the Blackfang settlement woke beneath a heavy gray sky.
Snow covered the rooftops of the newly built dens, while thin columns of smoke rose from the cooking fires and disappeared into the cold air.
Nobody spoke openly about the sound that had echoed through the mountains during the night, but its memory remained in every cautious glance toward the western horizon.
The disappearance of the sentry had made the situation even worse.
Elder Mira had ordered the western region temporarily closed until Rowan could determine what had happened, and no hunting party was permitted to travel beyond the marked boundaries without approval.
The adults tried to maintain their ordinary routines for the sake of the younger cubs, but Ash could feel the uneasiness beneath their calm voices.
Rowan had spent most of the morning organizing search parties.
He wanted to find the missing sentry before another snowfall erased whatever evidence remained, but the western forest was considered too dangerous to enter casually.
The veteran hunter had therefore chosen a small group of experienced wolves to accompany him while the rest remained behind to strengthen the settlement’s defenses.
Ash was disappointed when Rowan told him he would not be joining the search.
"You are still young," Rowan had explained. "This is not a punishment. It is simply my responsibility to make sure you don’t walk into something you don’t understand."
Ash accepted the decision, even though he didn’t particularly like it.
He had learned enough from Rowan to understand that courage did not mean ignoring someone else’s judgment.
Sometimes the wiser choice was to remain behind and observe.
He returned to his den after the morning meeting, but his attention soon shifted toward the black stone the Silver Lynx had left beside his entrance the previous night.
He had kept it hidden beneath a fold of his bedding, unsure whether he should show it to Elder Mira or Rowan.
Something about the stone continued to bother him.
Ash carried it outside and placed it upon a flat piece of rock where sunlight could reach it.
At first, nothing happened.
It looked exactly as it had before, dark and smooth with a faint silver reflection along its surface.
Then the clouds moved.
A narrow beam of sunlight slipped through the gray sky and touched the stone.
Ash’s eyes widened.
A faint blue line appeared beneath the black surface.
The light slowly spread into a pattern.
It was not random.
The shape resembled the strange symbol he had seen carved into the ancient ruins.
Ash carefully turned the stone over, but the blue marking remained visible.
It looked almost like an eye surrounded by several curved lines, though he could not understand what it meant.
He stared at it for several moments.
"Where did you find that?"
Ash nearly dropped the stone.
Lyra stood behind him.
He quickly closed his paw around it.
"Near my den."
Lyra raised an eyebrow.
"That wasn’t there yesterday."
Ash knew she was right, but before he could explain, a frantic voice came from the other side of the settlement.
One of the younger cubs was missing.
The calm atmosphere immediately collapsed.
Several adults began calling the cub’s name while others checked the nearby dens.
Ash and Lyra exchanged a glance before following the direction of the disturbance.
The missing cub was named Niko, one of the youngest members of the pack.
He was small for his age and had developed a habit of following anything that caught his curiosity, especially rabbits.
A few minutes later, an older wolf discovered tiny paw prints leading away from the northern side of the settlement.
The tracks belonged to Niko.
They followed a line of fresh rabbit prints.
Ash looked at the trail and felt his stomach tighten.
The northern forest led toward a frozen stream that ran along the valley’s outer edge.
"He’s following the rabbit," Ash said.
Lyra nodded.
"We need to tell Rowan."
Ash looked toward the center of the settlement.
Rowan was already preparing the search party for the missing sentry, and several adults were occupied searching the opposite side of the camp.
If they waited, Niko could be much farther away.
Ash knew what Elder Mira would say.
Stay where you are.
Wait for the adults.
But another thought entered his mind.
The cub was alone.
And the forest was becoming dangerous.
"We’ll follow his tracks until we find him," Ash said. "If we see anything dangerous, we turn back immediately."
Lyra hesitated.
Then she nodded.
They followed the trail.
The tracks were easy to recognize at first.
Niko’s small paw prints crossed the fresh snow alongside the lighter marks left by the rabbit he had been chasing.
The trail passed beneath several tall pines and gradually moved farther from the settlement.
Ash kept looking over his shoulder.
The valley seemed peaceful, but the memory of the enormous tracks from the previous night remained fresh in his mind.
They continued until the forest opened beside the frozen stream.
Ash saw Niko immediately.
The young cub stood several meters away on the ice.
He was staring at something near the opposite bank.
Ash’s heart dropped.
"Niko, don’t move!"
The cub turned.
At that exact moment, the ice beneath his paws cracked.
A sharp sound traveled across the frozen stream.
Niko froze.
Ash sprinted forward.
The ice broke.
Niko disappeared beneath the surface.
Ash reached the edge and jumped without thinking.
The freezing water struck him like a wall.
His entire body went numb.
He managed to catch Niko before the current pulled the smaller cub beneath the ice.
"Hold on to me!"
Niko clung desperately to Ash’s fur.
The current was much stronger than Ash had expected. The broken ice had opened into a narrow channel beneath the frozen surface, and the water pulled them toward a darker section of the stream.
Ash tried pushing against the ice.
It broke beneath his paws.
He could hear Lyra shouting from above, but the sound seemed distant beneath the rushing water.
Lyra tried reaching them with a fallen branch, but the ice cracked beneath her weight.
"Don’t come closer!" Ash shouted.
She stopped.
Ash’s muscles were already beginning to weaken.
The cold was becoming unbearable.
He pulled Niko closer against his chest and tried to keep the younger cub’s head above the water.
"You’ll be okay," Ash whispered, even though he wasn’t sure whether he was speaking to Niko or himself.
The current dragged them several meters.
Ash looked desperately for somewhere to climb.
Then something moved across the ice.
At first, he thought it was another hunter.
A silver shape raced along the riverbank.
The Silver Lynx.
The young lynx stopped at the edge of the broken ice and immediately understood what had happened.
His amber eyes moved from Ash to Niko.
Then he disappeared into the trees.
Ash wondered whether he had abandoned them.
A few seconds later, the lynx returned.
He had found a narrow section where the stream became shallow beneath the ice.
The lynx stood on a large rock and began calling toward Ash.
Ash didn’t understand the sounds, but the direction was clear.
The lynx wanted him to move toward the shallower water.
Ash kicked against the current.
The effort exhausted him, but he managed to move closer.
The lynx continued guiding him.
When Ash reached the shallow section, the lynx grabbed the loose fur near Niko’s shoulder and pulled.
Ash pushed from behind.
Together, they managed to get the younger cub onto solid ice.
Lyra immediately rushed forward and dragged Niko away from the broken section.
Ash tried to follow.
His legs refused to cooperate.
He collapsed against the ice.
The Silver Lynx approached him.
For several seconds, the two stared at each other.
Ash had seen the creature before from a distance, but never this close.
The lynx was young.
His silver-gray coat was thick and beautiful, designed perfectly for the winter landscape. His amber eyes were bright and cautious, but there was no hatred in them. A thin scar crossed one side of his shoulder, disappearing beneath his fur.
Ash reached toward him.
The lynx flinched.
Ash stopped.
He lowered his paw slowly.
"I won’t hurt you."
The lynx obviously didn’t understand the words.
But perhaps he understood the tone.
He remained where he was.
Ash tried to stand.
The world tilted.
The cold had reached deep into his body.
He heard Lyra calling his name, but the sound faded.
The last thing he remembered was the Silver Lynx standing beside him.
Then darkness took him.
Ash woke to warmth.
For several seconds, he didn’t know where he was.
The air smelled of stone, snow, and something faintly herbal. A small fire burned near the wall of a shallow cave, casting soft orange light across the rocky interior. His fur was damp, but someone had placed dry leaves and moss beneath him.
He slowly lifted his head.
The Silver Lynx was sitting several meters away.
The lynx was watching him.
Ash remained still.
He remembered the river.
Niko.
The broken ice.
The rescue.
He immediately tried to stand.
Pain spread through his body, forcing him back down.
The Silver Lynx rose.
Ash instinctively became tense.
But the lynx did not approach aggressively.
