Rebirth: Saving the Lovely Girl from the Start

Chapter 569: "Well-behaved Version" Gu Muxue (3)

Xue Rui chose to lavish praise on her cooking technique. It was all stuff he had overheard in the back of restaurant kitchens; all he had to do was say the opposite of how a master chef would scold an apprentice.

“Oh, Ruoxi was the one who added the vinegar. I was in such a fluster I forgot it needed any,” Gu Muxue said, her rosy lips turning down slightly.

Xue Rui turned to look at Lin Ruoxi with an expression of utter despair. ‘This kid really dug me a huge hole!’ he thought.

Knowing she had messed up, Lin Ruoxi meekly buried her face in her bowl.

“Let’s just eat. It’ll get cold if we don’t,” Xue Rui said, hastily changing the subject.

‘A few more wrong answers,’ Xue Rui thought, ‘and I’m the one who’ll be toast…’

Watching Xue Rui’s nervous expression, a faint, almost imperceptible smile touched Gu Muxue’s lips.

Although Xue Rui’s praise had been wide of the mark this time, she could still feel how much he cared.

After dinner, a fidgety Lin Ruoxi was forced to sit on the sofa and play on the computer. Gu Muxue was “supervising” her, while Xue Rui was in the kitchen washing dishes and scrubbing pots.

After scrubbing the pot and washing a few bowls, Xue Rui paused to take a break. He took the opportunity to open the JD.com app and order a Siemens dishwasher.

Suddenly, Xue Rui glimpsed a figure out of the corner of his eye. He hastily shoved his phone into his pocket and diligently lowered his head to wash the dishes.

Xue Rui feigned a casual glance up and saw Gu Muxue walk into the kitchen, her head bowed. She silently picked up a greasy plate and began to rinse it.

Gu Muxue said in a low voice, “Xiaorui, I’m just starting to learn, so I’m not very good at it yet.”

“Muxue, I’m already so touched that you’d even step into a kitchen for me. I know you don’t have to do any of this,” Xue Rui said sincerely.

The same act carries a different weight depending on who performs it.

With Gu Muxue’s family background, being chauffeured around in a Maybach was a luxury many entrepreneurs who’d worked their whole lives couldn’t even dream of.

Gu Muxue had no need to expend energy on such matters. A bit of money could easily hire a whole team of chefs and maids, yet she had chosen to do it with her own hands.

Now, she was even in the kitchen washing plates with him. Was this really something a pampered heiress was supposed to do?

He hadn’t forgotten Gu Qingshan’s recent strange behavior—the man was clearly planning to recruit him as a live-in son-in-law!

Even Gu Muxue’s own parents wanted to find an obedient son-in-law for her, yet here he was, shamelessly enjoying being doted on by her.

‘If Gu Qingshan found out about all the things Muxue was doing for me, all the ways she was ‘suffering’…’

‘Sheesh, dying eight hundred times wouldn’t be enough to atone for it!’

Xue Rui gently moved behind Gu Muxue and wrapped his hands around hers. “From now on, I’m on dish duty.”

“Xiaorui, could you maybe not use my hands as a dishrag while you’re saying that?” Gu Muxue chided laughingly.

“But you’re wearing gloves, aren’t you?” Xue Rui said with a smile, inwardly thinking, ‘I’ll just cancel that dishwasher order later…’

Xue Rui leaned forward just as Gu Muxue tilted her head back. Their eyes met, calm and steady.

Gu Muxue blinked a few times, her long lashes fluttering as if to brush away motes of dust from the air, leaving her eyes looking remarkably bright and clear.

‘How can a girl this cute be so clever?’

Unable to resist, Xue Rui leaned in and kissed her.

Gu Muxue’s body went ramrod straight. She gave the tip of his tongue a light nip. “Jerk, Ruoxi is in the living room.”

“It’s fine. She can’t see.”

‘Well, that’s that,’ Xue Rui thought. The cards were on the table. There were no more barriers between him and Gu Muxue.

He could finally ask about the things he hadn’t dared to broach before.

Xue Rui couldn’t resist asking, “Muxue, I’ve always been curious about something. Back in high school, there was that time you got jealous and ignored me for a whole month. How were you so certain that there was something more between me and Lin Ruoxi? Did you have me followed?”

“I had a DNA test done with a strand of Ruoxi’s hair. It was a perfect match to a hair that fell off of you,” Gu Muxue stated calmly.

A sudden chill ran down Xue Rui’s spine. ‘Gu Muxue is exactly like Zhao Lizhen!’

‘Mother and daughter are cut from the same cloth—they only apply pressure after they have irrefutable proof!’

“From now on, you don’t have to go to so much trouble, Ms. Gu. Just ask me directly. I’ll tell you anything and everything,” Xue Rui said, raising three fingers as if swearing an oath.

“Hmph. As if you’d dare not,” Gu Muxue grumbled.

She thought for a moment before adding, “And that goes for how you treat Ruoxi, too.”
