Rebirth: Saving the Lovely Girl from the Start
Chapter 356 285: If Only I Could Create a Group Chat
"Xue Rui, let me take you to lunch," said Yang Xing.
Xue Rui shook his head. "Uncle Yang, I had a bunch of snacks on the way, so I'm not hungry. I want to get to the university and register as soon as possible."
Yang Xing nodded and drove Xue Rui toward the University of Posts and Telecommunications. The two chatted and laughed all the way there.
"Xue Rui, did you get your driver's license yet?" Yang Xing asked.
"I just got it a few days ago, but it's no use."
There was a hint of disappointment in Xue Rui's voice, which made Yang Xing even more curious. "Why?" he asked.
Xue Rui chuckled. "Because this car of yours has a yellow plate, and my license is only for blue-plate vehicles."
Yang Xing burst out laughing. Before the semester even started, Xue Rui was already clamoring about wanting to be the one to drive Gu Muxue around, and now he was bringing it up again. He chuckled and chided, "Why are you always trying to steal my job?"
"Because you've got a great gig! You only drive for Muxue, and I bet your total work hours for a whole month don't even add up to ten."
"Plus, you get to drive a luxury car every day. What are the requirements for a job like yours, anyway? Height? Degree? Years of driving experience?" Xue Rui joked.
Yang Xing grinned. "You don't need any of that. It's all about your blood type."
Xue Rui was speechless for a moment. "So you're a goddamn nepotism hire?"
Yang Xing just gave a noncommittal smile. Just as he was about to drive onto the campus of the University of Posts and Telecommunications, Xue Rui urgently called out from the back seat, "Quick, back up! Just stop at the gate!"
"You want to be low-key, too?" Yang Xing looked at him in disbelief.
'Weren't there only two things on the mind of a boy his age—girls and showing off?'
'He'd been planning to give Xue Rui the full VIP treatment today, help him make a grand entrance, but Xue Rui clearly had other ideas.'
Xue Rui just said calmly, "It's too flashy."
Yang Xing nodded slowly. 'Gu Muxue wants to be low-key, and now Xue Rui does too?'
'They really are a good match for each other.'
"A luxury car is a bit flashy," Yang Xing said.
"No, I'm worried that people with ulterior motives might become fixated on my stunning good looks. What am I supposed to do if Muxue gets jealous?" Xue Rui added.
Yang Xing's grip on the steering wheel tightened. 'So Xue Rui thinks he's a bigger deal than the Maybach?'
'Huh? No, that's not quite right. Considering the second half of his sentence, he must be worried the Maybach will attract a lot of gold diggers.'
'He had to admit, Xue Rui was quite devoted. Even without Gu Muxue around, he was still being so considerate. It seemed this wasn't just an act.'
The truth was, Xue Rui's actual destination was the high-speed rail station. He hadn't even brought his admission letter or ID today. If Yang Xing insisted on accompanying him to register, his cover would be completely blown.
Besides, Yang Xing wasn't very talkative, but Xue Rui knew that 'the little lady' often chatted with the driver about him. What he'd said was also a way to show his devotion in front of Yang Xing, on the off chance it might get back to her.
With that, Xue Rui opened the car door, shouldered his backpack, and started to feign walking onto campus.
"Hold on, Muxue prepared something for you," Yang Xing said, walking toward the trunk.
Xue Rui followed him. Inside was a large package.
Xue Rui unzipped it and saw a latex mattress, a set of bedding, and even sunscreen spray...
'That girl is so thoughtful,' he mused. 'Even though she's swamped with her own stuff, she still took the time to get him everything he'd need for the new semester.'
As Xue Rui lifted the bag, he also swiped two packs of cigarettes from Yang Xing's stash in the trunk, making the driver's eyebrow twitch.
"You can call me if you need anything. President Zhao's orders," Yang Xing said earnestly. He didn't really mind Xue Rui taking the cigarettes; after all, someone else would be reimbursing him for them.
"Alright, I'm heading into the university now." Xue Rui waved, signaling for Yang Xing to go ahead and leave.
Once the car had slowly pulled away from the university gate, Xue Rui ambled onto campus. He looked at the fountain near the entrance, which had been turned on to welcome the new students. In its center was a cluster of pigeon sculptures. Xue Rui was left speechless. 'No wonder the students nicknamed it "Boiled Pigeons,"' he thought. 'It has absolutely zero aesthetic appeal.'
Even though he had tried to be low-key, someone getting out of a Maybach was bound to attract attention. Sure enough, a male student immediately came over, ready to help him with his luggage.
Xue Rui couldn't help but think how cheap this student labor was. 'The university probably only pays them a few dozen yuan a day to stand out here in the sun.'
"Hey man, you a freshman?" the male student asked.
"So, the 'Boiled Pigeons' fountain is running again, huh?" Xue Rui said nonchalantly.
Hearing Xue Rui use the fountain's nickname, the student instantly lost interest. This guy was clearly an old hand, not a freshman, which meant there was no chance of selling him any campus service cards.
Xue Rui paid no mind to the other students and, like he'd been there a hundred times before, found his way to the security office.
"Old Ji, I'm just going to leave my stuff here for now. I'll be back for it tomorrow." Xue Rui called the guard by his nickname as if it were the most natural thing in the world. With so many students, how could the guard possibly remember who he was?
Besides, the photos and names of the on-duty staff were posted right inside; knowing a last name was hardly a surprise. He casually tossed the two packs of cigarettes onto the desk.
It was clearly overkill as payment for stashing his things, but his main goal was to make a memorable impression.
The guard had been thinking that he'd never seen this kid's face before, yet the kid somehow knew his name. He was still trying to figure out who he was and whether he should do him this favor when he saw two red packs of cigarettes land on his desk.
A wide grin spread across his face as he pulled out a pen and paper. "Don't you worry, my friend. I'll watch it for you, guaranteed. Just leave your name."
"You got it." Xue Rui coolly scrawled his name on the paper. As he finished, he caught a glimpse of Qian Huabiao being cornered by an upperclassman out of the corner of his eye.
"No, no, I've got it myself!" Qian Huabiao said, pushing through the crowd with his rolling suitcase.
'When someone offers to carry a pretty girl's bags, they're after her looks. When they pester a guy, they're definitely after his money. The world isn't filled with that many good Samaritans, after all.'
