Rebirth: Pampered by the Lord
Chapter 2723: Moved
They were all secretly trained confidants of the Prime Minister. With the Prime Minister dead, naturally, they obey the Empress. No one comes to the Cold Palace, so it’s quite convenient for them to come here for meetings.
The man kneeling on the ground cautiously asked, "Empress, are you not having a good time in the palace?"
The Empress’s once exquisite face had become extremely haggard, as if she had aged ten years overnight. She sighed and said gently, "Everything else is alright, it’s just the food that’s too awful. Either it’s gone bad or it stinks, and on the rare occasion when there’s a good meal, I’m afraid it has been poisoned. Alas, I don’t know when these days will ever end."
The man was extremely angry. No wonder the Empress asked him for silver; it turned out she was living worse than pigs and dogs in the Cold Palace.
These people in the palace are too self-serving. How much kindness did they receive from the Empress before, yet they’ve all forgotten — truly no conscience at all.
The man, kneeling on the ground, spoke angrily, "Empress, people in the palace are just so self-serving. You need silver to smooth things over for better food. Next time I come, I’ll definitely bring more silver notes so you can bribe a bit and not live so miserably."
The Empress nodded, moved. Still, her father’s former subordinates take good care of her, unlike her own people who almost poisoned her.
Thinking of that last time with the maid, the Empress still felt a lingering fear. Fortunately, she was reluctant to eat those meats herself, otherwise, she wouldn’t be standing here alive now.
Empress: "Oh, right, how did you handle that maid who tried to poison me last time?"
The man wilted instantly: "Reporting to the Empress, since that incident, the palace maid disappeared into thin air. Your subordinate couldn’t find her at all."
The Empress was shocked. It seems this palace maid has a new master, thus betraying her. Who could it be? Who wants her dead?
Could it be Noble Consort Wang?
Hmm, it’s possible. That little cheap person dreams day and night of her son ascending to the throne. Now, the Fourth Prince didn’t die but went to Wei Country instead.
Though she was deposed as Empress, Noble Consort Wang must still be wary of her, fearing the Fourth Prince’s return to Moli Country. If she were killed, even if the Fourth Prince came back later, no one would aid him, and she and her son could do as they please.
This scheme is really well thought out!
The more the Empress thought about it, the more likely it seemed that Noble Consort Wang wanted to poison her.
"Come over here, I have something to tell you." The Empress beckoned to the man kneeling on the ground.
The man got up from the ground and walked closer to the Empress.
The Empress whispered a few words in his ear.
"Yes, Empress, rest assured, your subordinate will handle it perfectly."
"Hmm, this is the Cold Palace, you can’t stay too long, or you’ll be discovered."
"Your subordinate will leave immediately!"
"Be careful not to let anyone find out."
"Yes."
The man agreed and with a flicker, disappeared from the room as if he had never been there.
The Cold Palace returned to its desolate state.
Since the Empress’s two closest palace maids were poisoned to death, only she remained in the Cold Palace.
The Empress was even lonelier than before.
In the Cold Palace, daytime is a bit better. Although there’s no one around, light is everywhere, making it seem less eerie and terrifying.
At night, it’s pitch black all around, very eerie and terrifying. Cold winds blow, feeling like many wrongful spirits weeping.
The Empress’s feelings were quite normal, after all, the Cold Palace had incarcerated many nobles before. Once they entered, they never left, dying inside the Cold Palace.
