Rebirth: Pampered by the Lord
Chapter 2580: Showing Off
"Nanny, don’t sleep outside tonight. Stay in the room with me. I’m scared."
Gu Lingqiao recalled last night’s events and felt a chill run through her heart.
Who knows if the little ghost will appear again; it’s safer to have someone accompany her.
"How can that be? Big families are most particular about rules. A maid can’t break these rules, or people will laugh at the master’s servants for not knowing their place."
The Old Maid’s smile was a bit smug, hoping to scare her half to death. No way she’d keep her company.
"But...!"
"No buts. Miss, hurry up and freshen up. Breakfast is getting cold."
"Alright!" Gu Lingqiao gave up, resigning herself to take it one step at a time.
"Ouch, it hurts so much. Why is my face hurting so badly? Nanny, bring me a mirror." Gu Lingqiao felt pain all over, especially on her face, as if even her teeth hurt.
"Yes."
The Old Maid turned around and secretly chuckled.
Soon, she picked up a small mirror from the dressing table and respectfully handed it to Gu Lingqiao, "Miss, here it is!"
Gu Lingqiao took the mirror, looked at it, and screamed in fright, dropping it as she stammered, "Nanny, what... what... what’s going on? How did my face become like this? Why didn’t you tell me?"
Waking up disfigured was too much of a blow.
Gu Lingqiao saw both her eyes blackened, her cheek swollen high, and her lips turned into two fat sausages, as if poisoned.
Oh my, is this even a person?
She had looked in the mirror before bed and was a full-blown beauty then. How did she wake up looking like a ghost?
The Old Maid too, she had been inside for a while yet hadn’t mentioned it.
The Old Maid, looking innocent, said, "Miss was already like this when I came in. I feared you would be upset, so I didn’t dare mention it."
Finally, she added mysteriously, "Miss, were you beaten by that ghost you saw last night?"
Gu Lingqiao blinked, thought for a moment, and agreed that besides that ghost, there wasn’t anyone else.
She immediately cried miserably, "What did I do wrong to provoke this little ghost?"
The Old Maid spoke mysteriously again, "Miss, I’ve heard that ghostly matters depend mainly on luck. If unlucky, you can encounter them at any time."
Gu Lingqiao cried while saying, "Nanny, do you believe now that I was beaten by a ghost? Last night you said you didn’t believe it. I really encountered a ghost, how am I this unlucky? Boohoo...!"
"I know Miss speaks the truth, but with the steward around, we can’t speak badly of the War Prince’s Mansion, only to put Miss in an awkward spot."
"What bad words? I’m just stating the truth."
"In front of others, even the truth can’t be spoken. Who wants others saying their Mansion has ghosts?"
The Old Maid’s triangular eyes shifted, "Miss’s bad luck, could it be because of the pregnancy?"
"Nonsense! This is the Master’s child. How could it bring bad luck?"
"Shh! Miss, keep your voice down. Don’t forget our plan."
"Hmph!"
Gu Lingqiao was furious. The Old Maid was too wicked, suggesting her unborn child was causing her bad luck.
After breakfast, Gu Lingqiao stayed in her room, not venturing outside.
The servants in the Mansion found it strange that this woman, who usually loved flaunting her prowess, didn’t come out to strut today.
