Rebate King: Every Beauty I Spoil Makes Me a Billionaire
Chapter 509: Changes (3)
The researchers became increasingly uncomfortable as the behavior continued.
They tried making noises to determine whether the birds were reacting to a sound outside the range of human hearing. They tested for nearby disturbances and examined the surrounding environment for anything that might explain the unusual gathering.
Nothing produced a satisfactory answer.
Then reports began arriving from other locations.
At a zoo thousands of kilometers away, several birds of prey had begun exhibiting almost identical behavior. Golden eagles, hawks, and owls repeatedly turned their attention toward the same empty section of the sky.
The species were different.
The locations were different.
The environments were different.
Yet their behavior was remarkably similar.
They were all watching something.
Something that human eyes could not perceive.
The internet reacted almost immediately.
Videos of the strange animal behavior spread across social media platforms at an astonishing speed. Within hours, clips of whales changing direction, wolves abandoning their territories, and birds staring into apparently empty skies had accumulated millions of views.
Online discussions became increasingly chaotic.
GLOBAL FORUM — TRENDING
"Why are animals acting strangely?"
"Is anyone else’s dog refusing to go outside at night?"
"Whales are changing migration routes. Scientists need to explain this."
"Athletes are breaking records everywhere."
"Hospitals are reporting faster recovery times?"
"That monastery video is creepy as hell."
"Something is happening."
The comments multiplied faster than anyone could moderate them. Some people blamed climate change. Others argued that unusual solar activity was responsible. A few claimed that Earth’s magnetic field was shifting.
Then came the more extreme theories.
Aliens.
Government experiments.
Secret military technology.
A hidden biological weapon.
A new virus.
A dimensional disturbance.
Some people insisted that the strange monk from the viral video had predicted everything. Others claimed that governments already knew what was happening but were deliberately concealing the truth from the public.
Conspiracy theories spread faster than verified information because they offered something that official statements could not: an explanation.
People wanted to know what was happening.
They wanted someone to tell them why athletes were suddenly becoming faster, why patients were recovering sooner, why animals were behaving strangely, and why ancient religious figures were speaking about the return of something called the "breath of heaven."
Governments released carefully worded statements urging the public to remain calm.
Scientists requested additional time to investigate.
Religious leaders offered their own interpretations, each drawing from their respective traditions.
Influencers turned the phenomenon into entertainment, producing videos with increasingly dramatic titles and thumbnails.
Meanwhile, ordinary people argued.
Some laughed.
Some panicked.
Some ignored everything.
And some began preparing for a disaster they could not define.
But while the majority of humanity debated what was happening, there were people who did not need to debate.
They had been waiting for this day.
They were scattered across the Earth, hidden within ordinary society and separated by generations of secrecy. They did not possess a single organization or a common leader. In many cases, they did not even trust one another.
Some families had spent centuries protecting their knowledge from outsiders.
Others had forgotten large portions of their own history.
Some possessed only fragments of ancient records that had been passed down from one generation to the next.
There were even families who had spent generations dismissing their own ancestors as superstitious fools, unaware that the strange stories contained within their family archives had once described real events.
Yet despite their differences, the surviving records of these families contained a recurring name.
The Strange Families.
The name was not an official title, and most members had never heard it used outside their own ancestral records. It was simply a term that appeared repeatedly in old documents, often surrounded by warnings about an age when the world would once again become saturated with Qi.
According to those records, when that day came, the world would begin to change.
Four houses still carried enough of that ancient legacy to matter.
The Sinclairs.
The Wens.
The Volkovs.
And the Steins.
None of them knew exactly what was happening.
That frightened them more than anything else.
For generations, these families had possessed fragments of knowledge that ordinary humanity had forgotten. They understood that the old stories were not entirely myths, but even they had never expected to witness the return of Qi themselves.
Their ancestors had described the possibility.
Their records had warned them.
But knowing that something might happen was very different from watching it actually begin.
Among the four families, the Sinclairs were the first to realize that the old records might be awakening.
Deep beneath an old Sinclair estate was a vault that had remained sealed for decades. The room was narrow and cold, constructed from thick stone that had been deliberately chosen to withstand moisture, fire, and the passage of time. There were no modern decorations inside. Instead, shelves covered almost every available section of the walls.
Ancient manuscripts rested behind protective glass.
Some were written on ordinary paper that had yellowed with age. Others were preserved on thin sheets of treated leather. A few were made from materials that modern members of the family could not identify with certainty.
The oldest documents were covered in symbols that had never been completely translated.
For generations, the Sinclair family had maintained the vault as a sacred inheritance. Every generation was instructed to preserve the records, even when their meaning had been forgotten.
Most members considered it a duty rather than a source of useful knowledge.
That changed when Edmund Sinclair entered the chamber.
Edmund was a distinguished man in his late fifties. His hair had begun to gray around the temples, and his normally calm expression carried the restrained authority of someone accustomed to being obeyed. Despite his family’s wealth and influence, he dressed simply, wearing a dark suit without unnecessary ornamentation.
He stopped in front of one particular cabinet.
For several moments, he simply stared at it.
Then he reached inside and carefully removed a small wooden case.
The case itself was old, its surface darkened by decades of handling. Edmund placed it on the table and opened it with deliberate care.
Inside was a compass.
It was unlike any modern compass.
Its brass casing was tarnished, and the glass covering the dial had become slightly clouded with age. The markings around the edge had faded considerably, and the craftsmanship suggested that it had been made long before modern manufacturing techniques existed.
For generations, the compass had been treated as little more than a family heirloom.
According to the records, it had once served a purpose.
Nobody knew what that purpose was anymore.
More importantly, the needle had never moved.
Not in Edmund’s lifetime.
Not in his father’s.
Not even in his grandfather’s.
The compass had always pointed in the same direction, regardless of where it was taken.
Many Sinclair family members had eventually concluded that the artifact was simply broken.
Edmund had believed the same thing.
Until now.
As he watched, the needle trembled.
His expression changed immediately.
The needle moved once.
Then again.
Edmund froze.
For several seconds, he did not even breathe.
The needle slowly began rotating around the compass face.
At first, the movement was almost imperceptible. Then it became faster, turning steadily until it finally slowed.
The needle settled.
It pointed toward the south.
Edmund stared at it in complete silence.
