Chapter 143: Granny Shi Enters the Grand View Garden
Chapter 143 -59: Granny Shi Enters the Grand View Garden
Wednesday morning.
The rain seemed to have lightened up a bit, falling like fine silver threads and tiny needles in a dense, continuous drizzle. Patches of condensation bloomed on the dormitory windows, and the entire campus was submerged in a pale gray mist. Although it was just an insignificant change, for those who had been trapped in the rainy season for far too long, it could barely be considered a good omen.
At ten o’clock in the morning was Professor Chang’s advanced mathematics class.
Though broadly referred to as advanced math, this course was actually titled *Field Theory and Infinite Series*. The name sounded intimidating, but to put it simply, field theory taught you how to use mathematical language to describe those invisible, intangible “fields” in space, such as gravitational fields, electromagnetic fields, or wind speed and water currents. For example, in this very classroom, the temperature varied at every different spot. If you connected all these temperatures, they formed a “temperature field.”
Professor Chang arrived at the classroom on time for his lecture without any unexpected hiccups. However, he was from the School of Mathematics and not a professor from the School of Physics, even though this course was closely related to physics.
Yu Xian listened quite attentively.
Perhaps that bottle of melatonin his older cousin bought had worked; surprisingly, he had slept quite well over the past two days. The dull ache in his temples from staying up late long-term had vanished, and his mind felt much clearer. Following Professor Chang’s train of thought, he jotted down notes, organizing the conversion process between Green’s Theorem and Stokes’ Theorem in his notebook.
On the contrary, Shi Zuozhou, who was sitting next to him, was acting somewhat out of character today. He actually hadn’t slept for a single second. For two whole class periods, he never once lifted his head. He stayed huddled in the corner, his left sleeve rolled up a bit, while his right hand kept poking and tapping on the curved screen of the Enoch Bracelet he had just received.
They finally made it to the ringing of the dismissal bell.
The moment Professor Chang tucked his lesson plan under his arm and walked out, Shi Zuozhou let out a long breath.
“Old Yu, let me show you something good.” Shi Zuozhou leaned over secretively and thrust his left wrist in front of Yu Xian, wearing an expression like he was offering up a treasure. “Look at this. What is it?”
Yu Xian was packing his backpack. He hadn’t paid much attention at first, thinking the other guy had just found some new dynamic wallpaper or watch face style. He casually glanced at the thumb-sized screen. However, when his gaze landed on that curved screen, his movements abruptly stopped. Squeezed between rows of icons representing heart rate, step count, and weather, was an extremely familiar icon—a simple, pixel-art style white rabbit head.
“Is that Rabbit Hole?” he wondered.
Yu Xian froze for a moment, subconsciously glancing around. The people in the classroom were filing out one after another, and no one was paying attention to their corner. He grabbed Shi Zuozhou’s arm and dragged him over to the window at the end of the corridor. This was a blind spot. Outside the window, rainwater slid down the glass with a steady PATTER, while steam billowed from the nearby hot water dispenser.
“This app… can be installed on the bracelet?” In Yu Xian’s impression, the operating systems for this kind of health-monitoring bracelet were always closed. Aside from the manufacturer’s preset functions, at most they could support “watch-exclusive” apps made by certified third-party developers.
“Hehe, haven’t you seen those videos of elementary school kids playing games on their smartwatches?” Shi Zuozhou took off the bracelet and swiped on the screen. “This thing is actually an Android phone in a bracelet’s clothing! And its specs are ridiculously high. The processor and RAM are stronger than entry-level phones from just a few years ago.”
He opened the ‘About Device’ interface and showed it to Yu Xian. “Most importantly, it comes with built-in Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC. It even has a Wi-Fi module, and the signal is more stable than an iPhone’s!”
Yu Xian stared at that tiny screen, watching the monitoring data jumping on it, and that bizarre feeling surfaced in his heart once again. A free-of-charge bracelet actually came equipped with such a comprehensive Android system? It gave him the illusion of seeing the latest Snapdragon processor inside a basic calculator.
“If it’s just for monitoring health data, wouldn’t a few sensors and a low-power chip be enough? Why would they give you such high-cost hardware for free?” Yu Xian frowned, voicing a concern he had been harboring since yesterday. “Old Shi, about that data collection agreement you signed… there’s no telling how much information they’re gathering. You’d better be careful.”
“Oh, come on, Old Yu. Even those two-hundred-yuan phones for seniors from North of the Great Wall run on Android systems. It’s no big deal.” Shi Zuozhou put the bracelet back on and waved his hand dismissively. “I looked it up thoroughly last night. Yinuo Biotechnology is indeed a top-tier international medical equipment manufacturer. They collaborate with many Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine, and who knows how many clinical trials they’ve already done.” He chuckled. “Let’s just take a look at our good little bunny first!”
Yu Xian paused, not expecting Shi Zuozhou to have done such sufficient background research. He gathered his thoughts and looked at the Rabbit Hole interface that Shi Zuozhou pulled up. “This is quite an unexpected gain… In other words, this bracelet has now become a node too?”
“Exactly! Moreover, the system optimization on this thing is done really well. It almost never kills background apps!” Shi Zuozhou switched back to the main interface, then back to Rabbit Hole, before pulling down the notification panel. “Plus, it’s waterproof and has an insanely long standby time. I fully charged it yesterday, messed around with it all morning, and it still has over 90% left. Isn’t this just the perfect mobile signal tower!”
Yu Xian looked at the 94% battery icon in the notification panel, along with the “Cortisol: Low” prompt, and nodded. “We can definitely have Wen Xiao make an Enoch Bracelet-exclusive version. At least in terms of battery life, it’s much more reliable than a phone.”
