Raising Yanderes to save the world
Chapter 218: Ch 217: The Calamity is not Dead
Kael decided to head back to bed after dinner, but his instincts kept screaming at him, making it impossible for him to fall asleep.
So, in the end, he decided to throw off his covers and head outside to take a short walk and clear his mind.
The outside air felt fresh and pleasant against his skin, and he was finally starting to feel sleepy when he heard a beeping noise in the back of his head. He did not know what it was, but the world magic did not keep him waiting for long either.
A familiar screen appeared in front of him with a familiar message on it.
[A new Calamity will be born soon. Time left: 1 day]
[Please stop the birth of the ’Moon-Eyed Tyrant’.]
The world magic asked this of Kael, but he was not sure what he was supposed to do. Besides, Selene was dead, right? So how could he help her?
For the first time, Kael started to doubt the world magic. Was it possible for it to be wrong this time?
But still...as strongly as he felt about this, he did not want to jump to any conclusions before he finished investigating.
’Tsk, looks like I will have to sneak out tonight and check the situation myself.’
Security around the mansion had been lax recently. Everyone was too focused on Kana and her whereabouts to pay much attention to anything else.
Besides, they trusted Kael to look after himself. But he doubted that trust would last after the stunt he was about to pull.
"Hmm, they will all understand. After all, protecting people from corruption is my current task."
Kael sighed as he jumped out of his window. He used his magic to soften the landing and started walking away, only to be caught by someone he did not expect.
"Hey, are you heading out for a walk? Let me come with you. It has been a while since we walked together."
Lyra caught up to him and quickly fell into step beside him.
It did not seem like she had any intention of causing him trouble, so Kael allowed her to accompany him.
"Sure, you can join me. I am just heading out to take another look at where Selene held me hostage. I want to make sure I did not miss any clues back there."
"Ah, you did collapse, so we came back in a hurry. It is possible that we overlooked something."
Lyra nodded as she spoke with confidence. But hearing her say that made Kael’s ears burn with embarrassment.
In the end, he decided not to give her another reason to tease him, and the two headed out of the barrier toward the place where Selene’s corpse had been left.
Her body was still lying where Kael had left it, and he immediately felt the urge to turn around and avoid looking at it.
"Oh! Looks like we forgot to clean this up. Things were rather hectic back then, so we must have overlooked it. Should I take care of it now?"
Lyra asked before using her powers to burn Selene’s corpse. But the elf’s body did not burn.
Instead, Kael was certain he saw her head move slightly.
[# A data error has occurred. World Magic’s functionality has been compromised.]
[New data has been acquired.]
[Calamity Name: Selene Asterveil]
[Mental Stability: -100%]
[Affection: ??%...0%...50%...100%...40%...?% (Raise to 100% to enter the destruction prevention route)]
[Trust: 100%]
[Congratulations, you have reached your first target...Error in data collection.]
The world magic seemed to be malfunctioning as its values continued to fluctuate. Kael had never seen it behave like this before, so he did not even know what he was supposed to think.
But he was sure of one thing—this situation was neither normal nor good.
World magic was an indication of the world’s will. If it was unstable, then that meant the world itself was unstable at this moment.
And a world in an unstable state was never a good sign.
[Congratulations, your target has caused the Calamity to evolve. The Witch Queen of the Dreaming Moon will now be born.]
Kael did not care about the title, but he cared about the fact that a Calamity was about to be born.
"Tsk, why won’t you burn? I am trying so hard here, but you still-"
"Lyra, get back here! It is no longer safe to stand beside Selene’s body."
Kael grabbed Lyra and pulled her back before she could be impaled by the spikes erupting from the ground.
The pair managed to retreat just as Selene’s body began to move.
The first thing the body did was open its eyes and look at Kael. The darkness in its expression made Kael’s body freeze.
And then the giggling started.
It was familiar and irritating. It was out of character for Selene, but at the same time, it somehow felt like a twisted part of her personality.
Selene’s sense of self and presence had been completely warped. What had once been human could no longer be called that.
"You...you made me like this. So why are you taking a step back? Come and join me here."
The entity extended its hand toward Kael, waiting for him to take it. But Kael had no intention of getting along with a Calamity.
"Sorry, but I am not in the mood to corrupt myself right now. Rather, I would prefer to slay you."
Kael told the entity, and it paused before putting on a sad expression.
Sigh
"What a pity! And here I thought we could get along splendidly. But don’t worry. I will take care of you even if you reject me. That is how deeply I care for you."
Selene was out of her mind. Not only was she spouting nonsense, but she had also lost control of her emotions.
And yet, it did not feel entirely out of character for her. Kael had mixed feelings about her presence.
Unfortunately, he had no time to dwell on them if he wanted to survive.
