Chapter 216: Ch 215: Back to recovery

Kael woke up in a room that was becoming eerily familiar to him. And as always, he was not alone in the medical room.

"Ugh, what happened-"

He tried to get up, only to get pushed back onto the bed by Seraphina. She held one of his hands and channeled her divine power into his body.

"Please rest. You are in no condition to be walking around. The corruption managed to get into your core and disrupt your bodily functions. I am currently driving it out, but it’s a slow process. Thankfully, it is just a small amount, so it is not worth worrying about."

Seraphina assured him, and Kael felt the trace she was talking about. It was not even a real trace, but rather the residue left behind when he had gotten involved with Selene.

He was about to tell Seraphina this when he noticed the looks on her and the others’ faces. They were too serious for Kael to make them understand what he was saying.

At times like these, it was better to let others misunderstand him.

The calm silence around the room was broken by Nathan’s impatience.

"Ugh, I cannot take it anymore! Someone, tell me what we are going to do about this situation? Surely we are not going to let it remain like this?"

Everyone knew that Nathan had a point, but no one had a solution to their current problem.

The easiest solution would be to eradicate the elf race and be done with it. But it would be unethical...

And speaking of elves, there was one person who still needed to be told what had happened.

"Adrian, did you inform Lady Kana about what happened? Corrupted or not, she is your fiancée and she deserves to know the truth behind what happened."

Kael reminded his eldest brother, who had a sour look on his face. Even though he knew what he needed to do, that did not mean he was happy to perform his duties.

"I was going to talk to Kana next. Now that you are awake, I should get to it."

He said to Kael, and Kael nodded in acknowledgment. But he had a weird feeling in the back of his mind regarding this situation. Something was nagging at him that they were forgetting something important.

It was likely not important, but...

"Brother, how long has it been since we came back?"

"A day."

"Hmm, and have you seen Lady Kana anywhere during this time?"

Kael asked, causing his brother to frown.

"I have not seen Kana, but that is nothing new. She does not like to come out often, as she prefers solitude and peace. Why? Are your instincts picking up on something?"

Adrian asked, his eyes sharpening all of a sudden. But Kael shook his head before his brother could take any action.

"No, it’s nothing. If you are sure that you know where Kana is, then I will not question you. After all, I am sure you know your fiancée better than all of us."

Kael tried to reassure himself, but something in the back of his mind kept nagging at him. And he finally got his answer during dinner.

Adrian had a grim expression and avoided eye contact with everyone. His usually confident brother was acting strangely, and Kael decided to point it out.

"Adrian, what is going on?"

The man in question finally sighed and put his spoon down on the table.

"Kana...has gone missing. None of the guards seem to know where she is. I am afraid we might have another disappearance on our hands."

Everyone stiffened at this news, and uneasiness began to spread across their faces.

Had it been a day ago, no one would have batted an eye at Kana’s behavior, taking it as part of her personality and chalking it up to her wanting to be alone. But this current situation was different.

Kael had an especially bad feeling about this.

"I think we should find Kana as soon as possible and also inform the rest of the elves. We might not be able to drive the corruption out completely, but we can weaken it so that it can be purified over time."

It was going to take generations to cleanse the elves, but it was something worth doing. And he was sure the elves would understand and agree as well.

Heck, anyone would when the alternative was the mass genocide of their entire race.

"Alright, I will go draft a letter to be sent."

Adrian agreed while the others kept eating. Kael noticed how quiet everyone else was while they discussed such an important matter.

One look at Seraphina’s face made him realize that none of his party had any interest in this. Only Leon looked mildly interested, but even he looked like he could not care less whether the elf race lived or died.

’Darn it! I can understand why the others look uninterested in what is going on, but how can you ignore it as well, Leon? Don’t you realize that you are the Hero? It’s your duty to look after this kind of thing!’

Kael almost yelled before he realized where he was and decided to control himself. He also felt unsettled, almost as if he was about to do something stupid, and even he knew it.

’My instincts are messed up. This must be a side effect of the corruption. Ugh, I had better get some more sleep and fight off the lingering effects as soon as I can.’

Kael’s instincts were telling him that danger was about to arrive soon. And he wanted to be prepared for it.

But to do that, he needed to finish his recovery first.

"Emma, please show our guests to their rooms for now. We can discuss what to do tomorrow."

Adrian instructed, and a fight almost broke out before everyone nodded in agreement. Kael did not even realize he was holding his breath until he watched things settle down.

Nathan passed by him with an annoyed sneer, but even he looked sympathetic toward Kael.

"You have rotten luck, brother. But at least you are alive after all this. I guess we should be satisfied with that."

Somehow, that sounded more like Nathan was cursing him than reassuring him. But Kael did not mind that in the slightest.
