Chapter 3526: Owner (7)

Chapter 3526: Owner (7)

“Brother, go bring Ying Zhi back,” Chen Hong said to her brother. “Ying Zhi and I aren’t in that kind of relationship anyway. Dad didn’t even bother to find out the truth first.”

They hadn’t even had a frank conversation yet, and her father had already gone and crudely poked a hole through the paper window. He had scared the man off.

“If he left just like that, it means he doesn’t really like you. If he truly liked you, he would definitely come back for you. To be honest, I don’t approve of two blind people being together,” Chen Hong’s father said.

“It’s our daughter who has to live her life. Can you stay with her forever? Who she wants to be with should depend on her own wishes,” Chen Hong’s mother said. “You didn’t even let the man stay for a meal.”

Ying Zhi was in a complete daze as he left the residential compound. Ning Shu stopped and stood by his feet. Ying Zhi remained motionless, gripping the leash.

Ning Shu sat down. She wasn’t sure if Ying Zhi wanted to go back inside or go home. Now that they were already out, did he really want to go back? Based on Ning Shu’s brief understanding of him, he definitely didn’t have the thick skin required to go crawling back now.

“Beibei, let’s go home.” Ying Zhi’s face was flushed from the sun. It was noon, the time when the sun was at its most vicious. His skin was turning red, and his sweat glistened in the sunlight.

Protect your skin, young man. Even if your love life is gone, don’t let yourself get sunburned and ugly.

Ning Shu and Ying Zhi took the bus home. Ying Zhi was out of it the entire time, relying completely on Ning Shu to lead the way.

As soon as he got home, Ying Zhi lay on the bed and pulled the covers over his head. He was silent. Ning Shu couldn’t tell if he was crying or just mourning his lost love.

Ning Shu lay by the bed, her tongue lolling out as she panted.

She originally thought Ying Zhi was just sad, and that after he finished grieving, he would either pull himself together or go find Chen Hong again. Instead, he stayed in bed for two days without getting up, and he didn’t even go to work.

He had no appetite. Occasionally, he would get up to pour some dog food for Ning Shu, but then he would go right back to bed.

Ning Shu: …

Ning Shu didn’t know what he was trying to achieve. She jumped onto the bed to see if he was sick, but Ying Zhi just pushed her off. “Beibei, don’t mess around. Let me be alone.”

He’d been ‘alone’ for a few days. That was enough.

Ning Shu thought about it, pushed the door open, and ran out. She even managed to pull the door shut behind her. She ran out of the compound and headed to the bus station.

When the Route 58 bus arrived, Ning Shu hopped on and found a seat.

Quite a few passengers stared at her. Fortunately, she was just a dog, so nobody asked her for a ticket. The weather was too hot, and Ning Shu couldn’t stop her tongue from hanging out as she panted.

When she reached Zhoushan Road, Ning Shu hopped off the bus and made her way toward Chen Hong’s house, following the familiar path.

She began barking and scratching at the door while pressing the doorbell. When Chen Hong opened the door, her eyes strained to see, but she couldn’t find Ying Zhi’s blurry shadow. She only saw a dog.

“Where is your owner?” she asked.

Ning Shu bit Chen Hong’s sleeve and started dragging her toward the door. “Did something happen to Ying Zhi?” Chen Hong asked.

Chen Hong felt for her cane by the door and let Ning Shu lead her.

Ning Shu guided Chen Hong through the process of taking the bus, getting off, and arriving smoothly at Ying Zhi’s front door.

Ning Shu stood up on her hind legs, pawing at the door and pressing the doorbell while barking loudly. As long as Ying Zhi wasn’t dead, he would be able to hear her.

Ying Zhi got out of bed and fumbled to open the door.

“Where did you go off to get so wild?” he grumbled.

“Ying Zhi, what’s wrong? Did something happen to you?” Chen Hong asked.

Hearing Chen Hong’s voice so suddenly made Ying Zhi feel like he was dreaming. He pinched his thigh.

Ow, that hurts.

He had just crawled out of bed. He hadn’t washed up or brushed his teeth, and he probably still had sleep in the corners of his eyes. Even though she couldn’t see him, Ying Zhi felt that he shouldn’t appear before her looking like this.

With a sudden bang, Ying Zhi slammed the door shut and rushed toward the bathroom. In his haste, he slammed right into the dining table, hurting his stomach.

Chen Hong: …

Ning Shu: -_-||

So useless!

Chen Hong stroked Ning Shu’s head while waiting for Ying Zhi to open the door again. Ying Zhi changed his clothes, washed his face, brushed his teeth, and shaved before finally reopening the door. “Come in and have some water.”

Ying Zhi’s home was unfamiliar to Chen Hong. She reached out with her arms and ended up touching Ying Zhi. She took the opportunity to feel his face. “You’re a bit thinner than I imagined.”

Ying Zhi’s face turned bright red. It was a good thing he had shaved, or else Chen Hong would have felt a hand full of stubble.

Ying Zhi also reached out and touched Chen Hong’s face, letting his fingers trace over her eyebrows, eyes, nose, and lips. Finally, he said, “You are more beautiful than I imagined!”

Ning Shu watched the two of them perform this tactile exploration of each other’s features. When they finally exchanged compliments, the atmosphere actually turned quite harmonious.

Chen Hong sat on the sofa, and Ying Zhi poured her some water. “Is there a reason you came over?”

“Beibei ran to my house and dragged me here. I thought something had happened to you,” Chen Hong said.

“I’m fine. Nothing happened at all,” Ying Zhi said defensively.

Ning Shu let out a bark. Chen Hong said, “About what my father said to you that day… he didn’t understand the situation. If it caused you any distress, I want to apologize.”

“No, it’s fine…” Ying Zhi was still being as stubborn as a dead duck.

Ning Shu gave a whine and lay on the floor, covering her ears with her paws. She truly couldn’t bear to listen to this anymore.

Chen Hong frowned. “Did it really not cause you any distress?”

“No,” Ying Zhi said.

Chen Hong stood up. “Since you’re fine, I should head back. Can you let Beibei walk me home?”

“I’ll walk you,” Ying Zhi said. “Beibei is already familiar with the way to your house.”

“Alright then, thank you,” Chen Hong said, lowering her head. She looked a bit disappointed.

Ning Shu: …

I’m the one who’s exhausted here, okay? -_-||

Even though Ning Shu couldn’t speak, there was one thing she felt she had to say—’You deserve to be single!’

Perhaps the physical disability had brought uncertainty and low self-esteem to his heart. Chen Hong had repeatedly tested the waters with Ying Zhi, but he kept backing away. Although he had said some firm words in front of Chen Hong’s father, he had ended up shrinking back into his house without taking any action.

Ning Shu led the two of them out the door. Instead of heading toward the bus station immediately, she led them on a detour through a quiet park, walking in circle after circle.

Ying Zhi finally felt that something was wrong. “Beibei, why haven’t we reached the station yet?”

It felt like they had been walking for a very long time.

Chen Hong had never been to this area, so she wasn’t sure about the distance. Hearing Ying Zhi say this made her heart sink. She hadn’t felt like they had been walking for that long.

Ning Shu almost couldn’t stop herself from rolling her eyes. Perhaps in the future, it would just be the man and the dog depending on each other.

Ying Zhi’s path to finding a partner was going to be difficult. The main issue was that he was a total blockhead. While he wasn’t a bad person, it was still going to be hard for him to find a girlfriend, let alone a lifelong partner.

A dog’s lifespan was short. A working dog like Ning Shu would only work for eleven or twelve years.
