Chapter 3198: Was a True Dragon Among Men

Chapter 3198: Was a True Dragon Among Men

Even a resolute woman feared a persistent man. Yin Qing realized her situation was becoming increasingly dangerous.

Her father was just a minor official, while Zhuo Cheran was a noble scion. His father was Prince Xin, and he was the nephew of the emperor, who favored him.

Yin Qing worried that the military force and weapons in her hands might either be her life-saving talisman or her death sentence.

Zhuo Cheran was not a simple man.

He was a true dragon among men. Just from the hidden guards he had sent to protect her, it was clear that Zhuo Cheran was a man with ambition and deep strategy.

Just thinking about it gave Yin Qing a headache.

Ning Shu asked Lianqiao to bring out some pastries. “These are mung bean cakes, perfect for cooling off in this weather.”

“Thank you,” Yin Qing replied, before taking a perfunctory bite of one.

Seeing the worry on Yin Qing’s face, Ning Shu asked, “Is something troubling you, Miss Yin?”

Yin Qing shook her head. “It’s nothing.”

She had wanted to explain that there was nothing going on between her and Zhuo Cheran and to advise Miss Su to keep a close eye on him.

But then she remembered that in this era, women lived under the shadow of their husbands. How could she possibly control the actions of a noble heir?

After exchanging a few more polite words, Yin Qing bid farewell and left.

Ning Shu sipped her sour plum soup. When Lianqiao returned, she asked, “Did Miss Yin say anything to you?”

Lianqiao shook her head, a little confused. “Was she supposed to say something to me?”

To be honest, daughters of low-ranking officials didn’t warrant much deference from someone like Lianqiao.

Still, Ning Shu felt that Yin Qing had wanted to say something but had ultimately held back.

Ning Shu had seen many world protagonists. Some were so naively sweet to the point of being cloying, while others were arrogant and explosive. However, one as capable of reading the situation as Yin Qing was rare.

Perhaps it was because she had been a police officer before she transmigrated, someone used to dealing with criminals and playing psychological games.

Ning Shu took another sip of sour plum soup. “How is that cousin of mine doing now?”

Lianqiao pouted. “That girl Xiaoqing is taking full advantage of the situation. The young master is sick, and she’s attending to him every day.”

She was trying hard to make herself indispensable.

“Has he stopped practicing calligraphy?” Ning Shu asked.

“The young master isn’t feeling well, so he hasn’t had time to practice,” Lianqiao replied.

Ning Shu narrowed her eyes and went to see Madame Rongguo.

Madame Rongguo put down her embroidery. Ning Shu took a glance. It was an image of green bamboo, likely meant for Marquis Xuanping.

“How did your conversation with Miss Yin go?” Madame Rongguo asked.

Ning Shu wasn’t surprised that Madame Rongguo knew about the matter. Matters within the inner courtyard were always under Madame Rongguo’s control.

“Not great,” Ning Shu replied frankly as she sat down.

“Let’s not talk about Miss Yin. Mother, did Father pay the money yet?” Ning Shu asked directly.

Madame Rongguo nodded. “He submitted three million in silver and twenty thousand bushels of grain. Your father almost cried in court.”

He cried? Ning Shu didn’t quite believe he’d genuinely cried. However, the act probably played out that way.

Madame Rongguo looked at Ning Shu and said, “If only you were born a man, you wouldn’t be stuck in the inner courtyard, having to hope for harmony with your husband, staying above jealousy, and acting with grace.

“We women, what are we even striving for in our lifetimes? Our only matters are marriage and childbirth. Those are things all women go through.

“Do you understand what I’m telling you?”

Ning Shu nodded. “Yes, Mother, I understand. As a woman, I shouldn’t entertain rebellious thoughts. I should be content, because all women live this way.”

Madame Rongguo nodded. “Exactly. That’s the only way you won’t suffer. Those who stand out are always targeted.

“If there’s an easier path, don’t choose the harder one. I know this is all because of the prince’s heir.”

Ning Shu pressed her lips together and smiled at Madame Rongguo. “I understand, Mother.”

Once again, Ning Shu felt grateful to be a task-taker, free from societal constraints.

Even though the path she walked was harsh, hers was a world where only strength mattered. What distinguished one from others wasn’t their gender, only their strength.
