Chapter 3156: I Need a Break

Chapter 3156: I Need a Break

There was no room for negotiation; the response they received to their actions was exceptionally forceful.

More and more armed forces gathered in the city to sweep through it completely.

With the situation as it was, Ning Shu became more convinced that someone significant had arrived, someone with enough power and status to mobilize the armed forces.

She wondered who the task-taker was.

Ning Shu sat down, removed the medical kit from her back, and said to Wen Xing, “I need a break.”

The two of them had been tirelessly running through the city for some time. They had barely even slept.

Wen Xing handed Ning Shu a bottle of water. “Then let’s rest for a bit.”

Wen Xing was also starting to feel physically exhausted. However, since Ning Shu hadn’t mentioned taking a break before, Wen Xing was too embarrassed to suggest it himself, especially because he was a man.

Ning Shu took a sip of water and pulled out a fasting pill. Then, she asked Wen Xing, “Want one?”

Wen Xing accepted the pill and swallowed it.

Ning Shu took another pill and swallowed it.

“How long have you been a task-taker?” Ning Shu asked Wen Xing.

Wen Xing, who was holding his water bottle, thought for a while before saying, “I can’t remember. Probably a long time. For task-takers like us, time doesn’t really matter, does it?”

As long as a task-taker isn’t eliminated, they would essentially live forever.

Ning Shu responded with a nonchalant ‘Oh. ’ Then, she looked at the starry sky above them. She said, “Suddenly, I feel like we’re living in an apocalyptic world.”

They were certainly fighting for survival.

“If we don’t wipe out these creatures, this world will definitely become one of those,” Wen Xing said.

“Why don’t we rest for the night? We’re both exhausted,” Ning Shu said. She rubbed her shoulders, which had been chafed raw by the strap of the medical kit.

She took out some ointment from the kit. She intended to apply it to the wound.

She had alternated the strap between both shoulders, but both were now chafed.

However, she couldn’t afford to leave the medical kit behind. If she needed to perform surgery and she didn’t have the tools at hand, she would be utterly helpless.

“Let me help you apply it,” Wen Xing said. He took the ointment, squeezed some onto his finger, and gently rubbed it onto Ning Shu’s shoulders.

“Thank you,” Ning Shu said in gratitude.

The ointment felt both cool and flaming hot on her raw skin.

Then, Wen Xing’s phone rang. He answered it and said, over and over again, that he was fine and would be back in a few days.

It was probably a call from his family.

It made Ning Shu wonder why the entrustor’s parents hadn’t called her.

Even if they lived in a remote, mountainous area, this sort of news should have reached them.

After hanging up, Wen Xing tore a piece off his sleeve and handed it to Ning Shu. “Wrap this around your shoulder so the strap doesn’t dig into your skin.”

Ning Shu looked at him in surprise. However, Wen Xing simply said, “We’re in this together now, come what may.”

Ning Shu took the sleeve and tied it around her wound, securing it under her arm.

For the first time, she felt the comfort of having a companion—a comrade who could offer help when needed, someone with the same goal, providing mutual support.

She needed to become stronger, and fast.

“I’ve relied on you a lot in this task. Honestly, I didn’t expect this task to be so difficult,” Ning Shu said. Wen Xing had provided them with advanced weapons and was also the one who tracked down the monsters.

Wen Xing smiled warmly. He seemed as gentle as a jade as he said, “It’s fine, we’re in this together. And I’ll get a portion of the merit points every time you save someone anyways.”

Ning Shu: …

Haha. Well, even though he had a gentle appearance, that didn’t mean he wasn’t clever.

Indeed, they had a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Ning Shu leaned against the wall and rested. She closed her eyes while cultivating the Unsurpassable Martial Arts.

This was where her strength came from.

Meanwhile, Wen Xing fiddled with his coins. Ning Shu got curious and asked, “Can you predict the future?”

“My abilities are limited. I can only predict what will happen in the next quarter of an hour, and even then, I can only predict a vague outline of events,” Wen Xing replied.
