Chapter 1485: Chapter 444: [Chaos] (Part 2)
Also, what did he just say?
Discrimination?
Whoa, isn’t this the typical behavior of Americans that everyone talks about?
"Um, Chief, should we..." The hotel manager next to him hesitated, "knock again?"
This police officer—more accurately, the local police chief—looked a bit flushed as he glanced at the hotel manager beside him: "What’s the point of knocking again? Are you blind? He’s a white man! A white man!! Those crazies in the South District were looking for an Asian with yellow skin, and we’ve completely got the wrong person—are you guys that blind that you mistook a white man for someone with yellow skin?"
After speaking, he cussed using the local language.
The hotel manager rolled his eyes and didn’t bother to engage with the outraged police chief.
So what if he’s the police chief? In the eyes of the big shots in the North District, a dump like Gusanka’s so-called police chief is just like a street dog.
Perhaps those small business owners who are extorted by these policemen might fear them.
But as the manager of this hotel, my boss is none other than the Mayor’s Wife!
This so-called police chief, only has dozens of policemen at his command, most of whom patrol with just batons, and only a dozen have guns—nothing worth a damn!
Even if you paraded the whole police station out, if it came down to a real fight, they couldn’t even take on an ordinary gang from the South District. A police chief like him is merely the Mayor’s lackey.
And a toothless one at that, just a dog that can only bark in assistance when something happens.
"...Let’s go!" The police chief snorted, turned, and left, and the hotel manager followed behind him with a look of disdain.
After going downstairs, the hotel manager watched the policemen leave and immediately handed a note to an attendant nearby.
"The guest in that suite... what did he just say about a mining company?"
"I didn’t catch the specific name clearly; my English isn’t that good. But he did indeed say it was a mining company, that’s for sure."
The hotel manager hesitated for a moment.
A mining company?
Within a few hundred kilometers of this area, the biggest mine owner is the Mayor of this city.
An American mining company might be here to do business with the Mayor?
My boss is the Mayor’s Wife, which makes the Mayor my boss’s boss!
This is not someone I could afford to offend.
If, during a business talk with the Mayor, they casually complain, would that be the end of me?
After struggling to climb up to become the manager of this hotel, enjoying the perks—if the Mayor gets angry and sends me off to dig in the mines, wouldn’t that be like falling straight into hell?
No way, absolutely not!
As for whether this is really the case, how could I dare to ask?
The Mayor’s mining business and dealings, do small fries like me have any right to pry into it?
Hmm, whether or not it is, better schmooze just in case! Staying out of harm’s way is key!
"Deliver a bottle of our best wine to the guest in the suite and say that we sincerely apologize for disturbing his rest!"
·
Chen Yan stood behind the door, listening to the people outside leaving, curling his lips.
This could only happen in this shabby little country; if it were in Dragon Country, would he dare to be so arrogant with the police?
What does being a cultivator matter? Back when I was with Young Lady Gu and the police checked the hotel rooms, we opened the door and let them check our IDs just the same.
But just now, there wasn’t any choice—how could I provide identification when I don’t have any?
This appearance is something I’ve conjured as a white man, where would I find documents for the local police to inspect?
Luckily, by pretending to be a domineering American, I managed to bluff these folks.
·
At lunchtime, Chen Yan went to the restaurant, and as soon as he sat down, the hotel sent over a bottle of wine. The waiter who brought it was probably the one with the best English in the hotel, as there was only a slight local accent, and surprisingly, it was even a woman.
The person very respectfully conveyed the hotel’s apology to Chen Yan, presenting him with the bottle of wine, claiming it as the hotel manager’s personal collection and hoping to earn some forgiveness from this esteemed guest, Chen Yan.
In between the lines, the underlying message hoped Chen Yan wouldn’t complain about the minor unpleasantness that occurred today. They also dropped a ’special’ hint, suggesting that if Chen Yan needed anything else ’special’, he could also let her know.
Chen Yan didn’t pay much mind to this; after accepting the wine, he sent the person away.
The wine wasn’t top-tier, but not bad either. In a dump like Gusanka, having wine of this level was a mark of genuine intention.
Moreover, even the lunch was complimentary now.
Chen Yan opened the bottle of wine and generously poured a glass for Haid.
This little fellow can’t be treated like a child, even though he’s only twelve, but... this kid already knows how to kill, set fires, bury bodies, repair cars, and latch onto influential people.
When at the repair shop, Chen Yan had already seen him smoking.
For the lower underclass in chaotic areas, many start this way from a young age.
The restaurant had a window facing outside the hotel. Chen Yan sat in a window seat and wasn’t overly concerned with savoring the meal—the skill of the chef was just so-so, and the local-flavored cooked beans and cheese were just passable.
The beef wasn’t steak, but stewed, though it seemed slightly tough by Chen Yan’s standards.
But it didn’t matter.
