Chapter 1481: Chapter 443: Chaos in the North and South Districts
What’s even more surprising is that as the smoke spread, from the north the sound of sporadic "bang bang" noises could be heard every now and then.
Chen Yan, having used quite a few guns and experienced battlefields over the past two years, immediately recognized those sounds as gunfire.
An explosion and gunfight occurred in the North District, the wealthy area of the city?
As the smoke spreading in the sky grew larger and brighter, the gunshots suddenly became more frequent.
The crowd initially watching the commotion on the street, gradually shifted from surprise and curiosity to a sense of fear.
After all, this wasn’t one of those consistently peaceful nations; quite a few people were capable of identifying gunfire.
Gradually, murmurs broke out among the crowd, followed by a bit of chaos.
Many people began to retreat, originally doing so in an aimless, instinctive manner. They moved based on intuition, attempting to subconsciously distance themselves from the smoke-filled direction in the north.
When the gunfire intensified, the crowd started to retreat significantly, some responding quicker, exclaiming as they jogged south, looking back while running, but more simply left without turning back, heading south.
Chen Yan stood by the side of the street, thoughtfully gazing north, suddenly his mouth turned up, revealing a slight smile.
He patted Haid’s shoulder: "Look, that direction seems like where our hotel is?"
Haid couldn’t understand Chen Yan, but his face was filled with deep worry—a natural reaction when witnessing chaos, smoke, fire, and hearing gunfire.
However, soon Haid looked up to see his "demonic" owner’s face showing neither fear nor worry, instead exhibiting a peculiar and meaningful grin.
Haid felt a chill in his heart.
Right, what is there to be afraid of! Standing beside him was a demon!
As a demon’s servant, what should he fear?
·
Chen Yan made a simple judgment: A significant incident occurred in the northern city; although unknown what it exactly was, with smoke, fire, and explosions and gunfire, it was definitely major.
Since so, as per usual practice, as long as the city’s authorities, its official control over the city hadn’t completely collapsed, the next step would be deploying military and police forces, and starting a large-scale lockdown—a common procedure by governments worldwide.
"Well, we can’t continue shopping anymore." Chen Yan sighed regretfully.
Two hours later, Chen Yan, taking Haid, returned from the South District to the North District.
On the way back, they encountered some hurdles, as the North District police deployed entirely. They blocked the two roads connecting the South and North Districts in Gusanka City—the only two traffic bridges across an ancient, artificially structured canal dividing the city into north and south.
Police set barricades and roadblocks on the bridges, prohibiting traffic between north and south, specifically forbidding South District inhabitants from entering the North District.
Yet, thanks to Chen Yan’s transformation technique changing his face to a Caucasian appearance, police didn’t obstruct him—Caucasians here still received some privileges.
Little Haid, however, faced strict scrutiny by the police since he was a local.
Fortunately, Little Haid presented a hotel room card. Police glanced at the card and recognized it, knowing it belonged to the city’s poshest hotel, owned by the mayor’s wife—a well-known fact in the North District.
Using the local language, Little Haid explained to the police that he served this Caucasian gentleman.
The police looked at Chen Yan’s white skin, and then at Haid’s small stature, considering his young age, deemed him unlikely a hostile criminal, thus allowed them to pass.
Chen Yan and Haid walked back to the hotel, but soon found the street leading to the hotel completely blocked.
This time, even Chen Yan’s Caucasian appearance was ineffective, as the road-blocking police insisted they detour.
Chen Yan had no choice but to lead Haid around the street, walking an extra kilometer before finally reaching the hotel’s main road and entering the hotel.
Upon approaching the front gate, it appeared there were twice as many armed security guards as usual.
The hotel’s front entrance had barriers preventing vehicles from entering.
Even entering the hotel required identity verification.
Displaying his room card, Chen Yan, accompanied by Little Haid, passed the guards at the hotel’s entrance—he noticed their demeanor was far more serious, cautious, and responsible compared to those guarding the blocked streets.
They seemed more imposing in physique and expression.
·
Inside the hotel’s lobby, many guests gathered at the reception, persistently asking the staff for information about the situation outside. A suited manager attempted diligently to soothe the guests’ emotions with a gentle tone, seriously explaining something.
However, it was evident from his helpless expression and the agitated crowd that his soothing efforts weren’t very successful.
Chen Yan joined to listen for a bit, realizing the manager failed to calm the crowd due to being unable to provide much information, despite his sweaty efforts. He could only offer vague official rhetoric to appease everyone, urging them to remain in the hotel and affirming enhanced security and attempts to ensure everyone’s safety.
