Chapter 1476: Chapter 441: [Small City Gusanka]_3

There are shops, hospitals, churches, schools, and areas where the local rich reside—even the police station is in the north.

According to this fellow, if you want to tour around, you can walk north after leaving the hotel and within a few minutes reach the former Governor’s Mansion from the colonial era, now the City Government. The nearby shops and restaurants are quite good.

Most importantly, the security is relatively good.

Chen Yan pondered this, took out a map, spread it on the table, and pointed with his finger: "What about the south?"

The fellow instinctively showed a dismissive expression: "The south, that’s the place for poor people. I don’t recommend visiting the south.

In that place, the air is filthy, and on the street, maybe a child brushing past you will pickpocket your wallet. In every alleyway, there might be someone with a knife ready to snatch your phone."

·

According to this fellow, the south is not only poor but most importantly, chaotic.

This so-called "poor area" occupies two-thirds of Gusanka City.

The reason for the chaos is firstly poverty, of course.

Poverty breeds numerous crimes, with the lower-tier gangs, bandits, extortion, robbery, theft, and of course the traditional enterprises of gangs, such as operating prostitution and illegal casinos.

Another rather sensitive reason for the chaos is ZJ.

The local people’s beliefs are quite complex. In fact, the beliefs in this region, and even in nearby countries, are quite complex.

Initially, there were indigenous religions, then Arabs occupied this land and brought Islamic teachings.

Then, during the colonial era, the whites brought the cross.

With the migration of ethnic groups, the local population has become increasingly mixed. As different ethnicities and religions intersect, many conflicts arise.

According to this fellow, the southern area is a place "where even the police are reluctant to patrol."

However, this only piqued Chen Yan’s interest!

He brightened up his eyes.

Religion?

According to normal logic, seeking mysterious powers would naturally lead one to look toward the path of religion.

·

"If..."

After finishing his narration, the fellow lowered his voice somewhat, using a probing tone, "If you want to find women, or want to gamble at a casino, I wouldn’t recommend going south... There are similar places in the north, only the fees are higher. Of course, it’s much safer!"

At this point, he looked expectantly at Chen Yan, his facial expression implicitly meaning: I can recommend, but naturally, there should be some perks.

Chen Yan, however, finished his final sip of beer, stood up directly, and turned to leave.

Watching Chen Yan’s back shadow, the fellow curled his lips, somewhat disappointed.

But he fondled the US Dollars in his pocket.

Hmm, still considered it a gain.

·

Chen Yan walked straight out of the hotel lobby, through the yard, and onto the street.

Recognizing the direction, he leisurely walked south.

The border between Gusanka City’s North and South Districts is very clear. According to the map and the hotel fellow’s earlier explanation, the boundary line is a river.

To be precise, it’s an artificial river.

This river was constructed during the colonial era, sourcing water from a branch of the Nile River, channeling it into Gusanka City, while boats could be carried along to transport resources to the town.

But that was over a hundred years ago.

Nowadays this artificial river is abandoned, especially as water resources from the Nile’s branch have dwindled, leaving the river dry for half of the year.

Nonetheless, this river runs through Gusanka, dividing the town into northern and southern zones. Its surface forms roadways with two arched bridges, becoming the only two pathways connecting the North and South Districts.

One of them is the most famous, marked on the map as "Revolution Road."

It’s said that when the colonial era ended, the local insurgents gathered from the south, crossing this bridge road to attack the Governor’s Mansion and overthrow the colonial rulers.

Ten minutes later, Chen Yan was already walking on this "Revolution Road."

The bridge surface is wide, accommodating two cars driving side by side, and the artificial river beside is dry, showing a silty riverbed. During the dry season, with constant sunlight exposure, the riverbed’s silt becomes cracked.

There’s also quite a lot of trash thrown down by local residents.

Standing on this road looking north, one can see the architecture of the Governor’s Mansion—though now it’s the City Government.

Crossing the bridge and reaching the southern end of Revolution Road, it instantly feels like a totally different style from the north.

The buildings on both sides, it’s hard to see that kind of concrete structures anymore; timber and earth constructions become the mainstream.

Houses are lower, more dilapidated, roads narrower, and road conditions worse.

The originally narrow street, with shops occupying space on both sides, compresses what could accommodate two cars into a single carriage lane.

But it doesn’t matter because there are rarely cars driving here.

Those three-wheeled contraptions have become mainstream, alongside people riding motorcycles.

Chen Yan has seen similar backward street areas in many places in the past few months.

India, the Middle East, North Africa—the old street areas in the world’s backward regions are almost identical, dirty, chaotic, and poor.

In fact, it was the same in Dragon Country’s cities decades ago, only Dragon Country later developed better.

·

Continuing south through Revolution Road, Chen Yan wandered aimlessly in the South District, not knowing where he was heading or arriving.

Carefree without pinpointing any exact area, he jaunted around carelessly, just taking chances.

Despite the poverty and decay in the southern filthy and chaotic street area, from a certain angle, it’s more imbued with low-tier vitality.

On a particular street, Chen Yan even saw a rumored "street food."

In Dragon Country, in the movie "The Wandering Earth 2", a type of food called grilled mosquito cake was mentioned at the start.

This thing really exists.

In resource-poor regions, ways to supplement protein are scarce, and mosquitoes, as long as there are enough, can somehow provide the poor with some protein.

However, looking at those stalls on the street with black speckled cakes—the dense black dots are mosquitoes.

He sped up his steps without hesitation, with no intention of tasting it.

Encountering such almost baseline-challenging food, after descending Mount Everest, throughout his journey in India, Chen Yan has seen enough.

Nonetheless, Chen Yan did not look down upon this phenomenon.

In this world, all such dirty, chaotic foods stem from a common root: poverty!

No one likes poverty willingly, nor willingly chooses dirty or chaotic foods.

Chen Yan strolled in the South District for quite a while, until the sky gradually darkened when he intended to return to the hotel.

After crossing just one street, Chen Yan sighed, realizing he was being watched.
