Chapter 1474: Chapter 441: [Gusanka, the Small City]
Chapter 441 [The Town of Gusanka]
The town is not small in scale, but like all the towns in this area, it is old, rundown, and backward.
The roads are dilapidated, and when cars drive through, clouds of dust rise up. On the sidewalks, children are playing; they’re dressed in old clothes donated by various international charities. Although the styles seem relatively new, the clothes appear worn.
Everyone looks thin, especially the children, some even running barefoot on the streets.
The buildings alongside the roads are not tall; they are of a clay-stone mixture, resembling products from last century.
Between some buildings on the roadside, narrow paths emerge, and there seem to be furtive figures lurking within.
Once Chen Yan’s luxury RV drove into the town, it immediately attracted considerable attention—it’s not every day one sees such a luxurious vehicle in a place like this.
On the way here, Chen Yan used Haid’s mobile to search for the town of Gusanka and found a hotel that appeared decent.
It barely qualifies as a "hotel."
After wandering the town for half an hour, they finally found the place—not because the town is too large, but because the roads are too narrow, and the road conditions are too poor.
This road, who knows how many years ago it was built, probably assisted by foreign infrastructure donations, but clearly lacked regular maintenance over the years. Some sections of the road surface are now full of potholes, with cracked asphalt broken into pieces, forming various depressions, even places where the road surface has worn away, exposing the damaged foundation underneath.
Coupled with the fact that locals appear to have no concept of traffic laws, pedestrians run chaotically along the roads, and some ride ragged motorcycles that zip through gaps between people. This chaotic road condition left Haid, who was responsible for driving, covered in a cold sweat.
He feared damaging his master’s car.
·
The hotel has three floors, making it the best and most luxurious hotel in the town of Gusanka.
The exterior architectural style is clearly French—this place was a French colony many years ago, and the buildings were likely left from that colonial period.
Not surprisingly, it is also rundown.
The hotel entrance features wrought iron doors wrapped in rust, the fountain inside is dry, but Chen Yan noticed while driving by that it was relatively clean, probably not running to conserve water.
After parking in the lot, Chen Yan and Haid walked into the hotel lobby.
Haid, assuming the role of a servant, walked slightly hunched, sycophantically shadowing Chen Yan, half a step behind.
It was Haid who handled the check-in, directly requesting the best suite in the hotel.
As for the registration, no identification was needed; Chen Yan simply had Haid flash a few US Dollars to settle everything.
In places like this, rules are unlikely. Perhaps the national structure exists, but it’s merely a fa?ade as background.
During the half-hour drive to the hotel, they passed a local police station.
The building was also dilapidated, with uniformed officers coming and going, looking dispirited, uniforms worn disheveled, lacking any spirit whatsoever.
Chen Yan also noticed the police cars parked on the roadside outside the station.
How to put this—one was a car, but looked older than Chen Yan and Haid combined.
The other "police car" was even more laughable, an adorable three-wheeled vehicle with a nickname back in Dragon Country: "san-beng-zi."
Only the sheet metal was painted with police station insignia.
It’s hard to imagine local police chasing criminals in "san-beng-zi"; what a picturesque scene that would be.
Clearly, this place lacks effective laws and systems.
·
The hotel is much more orderly than the streets.
At least there’s security at the hotel entrance, their uniforms looking much more neat and clean compared to local police, worn properly.
The lobby is very clean, even carrying a scent of incense.
Guests coming and going are decently dressed, including white travelers.
Once Haid finished the check-in and received the room key, Chen Yan, originally resting in the lobby, suddenly stood, walking to the front desk, revealing a note, swiftly exchanging it for the item he desired from an employee in uniform.
A paper map of the local area.
·
The suite was unexpectedly better than anticipated, fully equipped. Wind the clock back twenty years, and it could definitely be called luxury.
Yet evidently, in this impoverished and backward area, these amenities not only lag behind the times, but their usage rate is also concerning.
The bathroom’s clearly copper-crafted faucet doesn’t dispense any hot water.
Due to energy shortages, even the best local hotel is subject to power and water restrictions.
According to signs in the room, hot water is provided only between eight and twelve at night.
As for electricity, it’s even more intriguing; most rooms in the hotel have power supplied only after six in the evening.
The expensive suite Chen Yan booked has the privilege of unrestricted electricity use.
Once in the room, Haid eagerly turned on the air conditioning, then hurried into the bathroom, gulped down mouthfuls of cold water from the faucet, emerging to stand under the air conditioner’s vent, panting to cool down.
