Chapter 84: Chapter 84| Blown Cover
They’d covered both exits.
Damian was off the couch before the thought finished forming.
No lights. No noise. He crossed to Kira’s door and knocked twice — fast, sharp, the specific knock that said now rather than soon. Then to the bedroom door. Same knock.
Kira’s door opened in eleven seconds.
She was dressed. Jacket on. She’d slept in her operational clothes which was either paranoia or professionalism and at 3:07 AM the distinction didn’t matter.
He held up four fingers. Pointed at the floor. Made the circle motion, which indicated surrounding.
Her eyes sharpened. She nodded once.
The bedroom door opened. Sable stood in it with her tablet already in her hand and the specific expression of someone who had been pulled from sleep and had arrived at full function faster than most people managed fully rested. Elena was behind her. Less fast, more disoriented, but moving.
He looked at Sable.
"Secondary exit," he said. Barely above a breath. "Now. Both of you. Kira’s second backup location. She gave you the address last week."
Sable nodded. Took Elena’s arm. Moved toward the secondary exit at the back of the unit. The window onto the fire escape that Kira had identified on their first night as the non-primary route out.
He looked at Kira.
She was already looking at the front door.
[Flux: 41%]
"How long," she said.
"Sixty seconds," he said. "Maybe less."
She looked at him. At his Flux reading she couldn’t see but had learned to read from his face with the accuracy of someone who had been paying attention for weeks.
"Ember Shell," she said. "Now. Before they’re inside."
He activated it.
[Flux: 29%]
The barrier came up in 0.7 seconds. The fastest yet, his pathway having apparently decided that 3:07 AM with four combat Subjects sixty seconds from the door was an appropriate time to perform at its ceiling. The shimmer settled across his entire body. Heat distortion. Trace suppression locking into place.
The front door came off its frame at 3:08 AM.
BOOM!
Not broken, totally removed. Something had hit it with enough concentrated force to take the hinges out of the wall rather than the lock out of the door. The door came inward and the first Subject came through behind it without slowing down and the safe house received them the way safe houses received things that weren’t supposed to be inside them.
Damian moved first.
Forward. Always forward. The lesson that had arrived in the safe house hallway and had apparently decided to be present at 3:08 AM in the actual safe house when it mattered most. He closed the distance to the first Subject before it had fully assessed the room. Three steps, inside its reach before it registered he was moving, his right palm driving base Pyros output into its sternum at point blank range.
[Flux: 26%]
The Subject went back into the doorframe. Stayed upright. Terris-class, he felt the density of it in the impact, the specific resistance of a body that had been reinforced at the pathway level. Not going down from base output.
He didn’t give it time to reset.
Pyros Surge.
FWOOOM!
[Flux: 14%]
The output hit it in the chest at full upgraded force and the Terris-class Subject went through the doorframe and into the corridor wall outside and did not get up.
The second Subject was already inside.
Aeros-class. He felt it in the Flux Read before he saw it move, the specific output signature of a wind-class asset at operational capacity. It was fast. Faster than anything he’d faced since Kira in the farmhouse yard and Kira had been choosing not to engage.
This one wasn’t choosing.
It closed the distance in a burst that left the air in its wake displaced and wrong and hit him with something that the Ember Shell absorbed maybe forty percent of. The other sixty percent arrived anyway and put him sideways into the kitchen counter with enough force to take the breath out of him for a full second.
FWOOOSH!
Damian used the counter to push off.
Came back toward it instead of away. Forward. Into the threat.
The Aeros-class Subject had not expected that. Most targets moved away from the hit. The half second of recalibration it needed was the half second Kira used.
She came from its left. Compressed air at precise pressure, the pathway disruption technique she’d used on interior Subjects at Facility Seven. The Aeros-class Subject was wind-class itself which meant it could feel the atmospheric manipulation coming and had a partial defense against it.
FWOOOSH!
Partial.
Its coordination dropped forty percent instead of the eighty the technique produced on non-Aeros targets.
Forty percent was enough for Damian to close the remaining distance and drive his elbow into the back of its neck with everything his body weight could produce without Flux behind it.
The Subject went down.
[Flux: 12%]
Two down. Two more coming through the service entrance at the back. He felt them in the Flux Read, inside the building now, moving up the service stairs.
He looked at Kira.
She was breathing harder than usual. Her left arm was pressed against her side. The dressing, the injury that hadn’t finished healing, the specific cost of using an arm in a real engagement before it was ready.
"Back entrance," he said.
"I know," she said. She was already moving toward the service corridor.
He followed.
The third Subject came through the service door at the same moment they reached the corridor.
Glacis-class. Ice. He felt the temperature drop in the air before the Subject fully manifested. The specific atmospheric shift of an ice-class asset pulling Flux into its environment. The corridor went cold. His breath showed.
He activated Ember Shell again.
[Flux: 0%]
The number hit zero and his body registered it immediately. The specific cliff edge of complete Flux exhaustion, the sensation he’d felt on the facility floor in year three and had been trying not to repeat ever since. His vision didn’t blur this time. He was too focused for blur. But the specific weight of empty was there, unmistakable, the feeling of a system that had run out of what it ran on.
Then..
Ding!
[Flux Synchronization: Activated.]
[Trigger: Flux level critical — 0%.]
[Condition: Sable Wren — bond proximity range exceeded. Secondary trigger: Elena Vasquez — Grade A bond active.]
[Emergency transfer: +5% from compound bond depth.]
[Flux: 5%]
Five percent. From nothing. The bond pulling across whatever distance Sable had put between the safe house and the secondary exit.
