Chapter 53: Chapter 53| Few Minutes to Breach
Damian looked at the adjusted approach line.
"Run it again," he said. "The perimeter read. I want to feel that stationary signature one more time before we move."
Kira sent another current.
He closed his eyes and felt it return. The same three signatures, the same suppressed quality on the eastern face, the same stationary weight of something that was actively managing its presence in the environment. He stayed with it longer this time. Let his pathway read the specific texture of it rather than just the location.
Ding!
[Flux Read: Active.]
[3 Flux-active signatures detected within range.]
[Signature 1: Mobile. Eastern perimeter. Standard output — Pyros-class probability high.]
[Signature 2: Mobile. Northern perimeter. Standard output — element class unconfirmed.]
[Signature 3: Stationary. Eastern face — approach corridor junction. Output suppressed. Deliberate reduction detected. Classification: Unknown. Recommend close range assessment.]
He opened his eyes and looked at Kira.
"The system flagged the third one," he said. "Output suppressed deliberately. It can’t classify it at this range." He paused. "Recommends close range assessment."
"Which is exactly what the bypass gives you," Sable said from the car without looking up.
Kira looked at him. "The system flagged all three?"
"Yes," he said. "Flux Read. It detects active pathway signatures in the surrounding environment." He looked at the tree line. "It’s been running since we stopped."
Kira was quiet for a moment. The specific quiet of someone filing a variable they hadn’t known existed until thirty seconds ago.
"That changes the close range assessment," she said. "If the system can flag signatures you can navigate by it inside the facility rather than purely by feel."
He looked at the edge of his vision where the system sat patient and present.

Passive dissipation had been running through the perimeter assessment. He noted the number. 2:00 PM was ninety minutes away. 68% going into the approach was lower than he’d wanted but workable with the Milk Memory ceiling holding the floor.
"One more thing," he said. He looked at Kira. "The asset on the eastern face. If it moves... if it comes off the stationary position during the window.."
"Then the bypass becomes an engagement," she said. "There’s no other branch."
He nodded. Filed it.
Sable closed the decision tree and opened the operational file and ran a final check against the updated approach line. Methodical. Complete. The specific thoroughness of someone who had learned to love the last pass before the lock.
"We’re good," she said. "The update holds across every branch."
Damian looked at the tree line.
Beyond it the approach corridor ran along the eastern face of Facility Seven’s outer perimeter. Beyond that two hundred meters of open ground. Beyond that the facility itself — research labs, archive room, suppressed designation files, one analyst who managed them on rotating shift.
The ring was warm on his finger.

"Ninety minutes," Kira said. She pulled her jacket back on. The specific movement of someone transitioning from assessment to operation. "We move into the tree line at 1:45 PM. Fifteen minutes of final positioning before the window opens."
Damian looked at the time.
Then at the tree line.
Then at Sable in the car. Her tablet was closed on her knee. She’d stopped working, which meant she’d done everything she could do from her end. She was watching him with the direct unhurried attention she’d had since the loading bay.
He held her gaze for a moment.
She gave him the nod. Not the crisp decisive nod of conclusion, the quieter one. The one that said she’d done everything she could do from her end and the rest was his.
He looked back at the tree line.
Few minutes left.

1:45 PM.
They moved into the tree line without speaking.
Kira led. Damian followed. The trees received them the way trees received things that knew how to move through them. Without ceremony, closing around them as they went, the forestry track disappearing behind the first line of trunks. The light changed immediately. Greener. Quieter. The specific quality of a space that had been left alone long enough to develop its own rules about sound.

Damian moved through the undergrowth and felt the facility ahead of him the way he felt things through Flux Read. Not with his eyes, with the low level environmental awareness that had been running since they stopped the car. Three signatures beyond the tree line. Two mobile, one stationary. All present. All in the positions the perimeter read had mapped them.
Nothing had changed.
That was either good or the kind of good that was actually bad and hadn’t revealed itself yet. He filed both possibilities and kept moving.
Kira stopped at the tree line edge. Held up a closed fist.
They stopped.
She looked at the open ground ahead. Two hundred meters of flat exposed terrain between the tree line and the outer perimeter fence. No cover. No blind spots except the one created by the shift change coverage gap that existed for exactly eight minutes starting at 2:00 PM and not a second longer.
She checked her watch.
"Twelve minutes," she said. Her voice was barely above a breath. "We hold here until the window opens."
Damian stood beside her and looked at the two hundred meters and thought about the stationary signature on the eastern face and the two meters of clearance on the western edge and the specific math of getting through both without being detected.
[Flux: 61%]
Passive dissipation running. He noted it. At 61% with an Ember Shell activation coming the moment they crossed the perimeter he was going to be at 49% before he reached the inner fence. He’d worked with less.
Sable was behind them probably ten meters back, positioned at the base of a large oak that gave her a sightline to both the tree line edge and the forestry track. Her tablet was open. The decision tree pulled up. Her role was here, at the extraction point, managing the operational picture from the outside, ready to adapt the branches if what happened inside diverged from the plan.
