Primordial Heir: Nine Stars
Chapter 526: Beneath the Borrowed Sky Finale
After dinner, they didn’t immediately clean up.
Khione lay on the blanket with her head resting in Nero’s lap, looking at the artificial stars above the trees.
Nero ran his fingers through her damp hair, gently separating the strands that had become tangled during their playful time in the river.
She seemed perfectly content.
Every so often, she would reach for his hand and hold it against her cheek.
He never objected.
The remaining food could wait.
The dishes could wait.
Even the trial could wait for a little while longer.
Nero looked down at her.
Khione’s eyes were half-closed, her expression peaceful in a way he rarely saw during their battles. Without the cold focus she carried into combat, she looked almost detached from the world around them.
He brushed his thumb across her cheek.
She opened her eyes and looked at him.
A small smile appeared on her face.
Then she shifted upward, sat beside him, and rested her head against his shoulder again.
Nero wrapped an arm around her.
They remained like that for a long time.
Eventually, Khione’s gaze drifted toward the bottle of wine.
There was still some left.
She reached for it.
Nero handed her the bottle and watched as she poured a little more into their glasses.
She returned the bottle to its place and passed him his glass.
They drank slowly.
The wine was no longer as important as it had been during dinner. It had become part of the atmosphere, another small pleasure to enjoy while the evening stretched around them.
Khione rested her glass on the blanket.
Then she took Nero’s hand again.
Her thumb moved gently across his knuckles.
A silent question.
Nero looked at her for a moment.
Then his gaze shifted toward the river.
Something about the peaceful surroundings reminded him of the things he had been postponing.
There were matters he needed to tell her.
Not because she had demanded an explanation.
Not because he feared her reaction.
But because he wanted her to know.
He turned toward her.
Khione immediately noticed the change in his expression.
She straightened slightly, giving him her full attention.
Nero took a breath.
Then, without embellishing the story, he told her about Barak.
***
He explained the encounter as simply as he could.
The confrontation had taken place after Barak’s connection to the dangerous entity had become apparent. The entity had possessed Barak’s body, using him as a vessel while exerting a power that didn’t belong to an ordinary awakener.
It had marked Nero.
The mark was no ordinary trace of mana. It was connected to something far more dangerous, and its presence suggested that the entity had taken an interest in him.
The battle had been unavoidable.
Barak had attacked.
Nero had fought back.
He described the clash of Lightning, the immense pressure released by their powers, and the moment he severed the entity’s connection to Barak.
He told her how the confrontation had ended.
Barak had died.
Nero had killed him.
He didn’t attempt to justify the result with grand words or pretend the battle had been simple. He explained what had happened and what he had learned from it, including the fact that the entity had remained active even after losing its hold over Barak.
Then he fell silent.
The river continued flowing beside them.
Khione looked at him.
She wasn’t shocked.
She had known Barak was dangerous, and she had long understood that Nero’s path would eventually bring him into conflict with people and beings far beyond the ordinary.
She had also known that Barak’s connection to the entity could end in tragedy.
Perhaps not in that exact way.
But something like this had always been possible.
Her expression remained calm.
She reached for Nero’s hand and held it between both of hers.
He looked down at their joined hands.
Khione gently squeezed his fingers.
There was no accusation in her eyes.
No fear of him.
No attempt to force him to explain himself further.
She understood that the encounter had not been something he could simply walk away from.
And she knew Nero well enough to understand that he would not hide the truth from her merely to make himself appear better.
She leaned closer.
Nero met her halfway, resting his forehead against hers.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Khione wrapped her arms around him.
Nero returned the embrace, holding her quietly against his chest.
The conversation had not changed anything between them.
If anything, it had brought them closer.
There were many things about Nero’s circumstances that remained uncertain. The entity that had marked him was still a threat, and neither of them could know when it might make its next move.
But Khione wasn’t going to leave simply because his life had become more complicated.
She had never expected their future to be easy.
She only wanted to walk beside him for as long as they could.
Nero rested his chin lightly against her hair.
After a while, Khione leaned back enough to look at him.
Her frosty blue eyes met his.
"I love you."
Nero’s expression softened.
"I love you too."
He kissed her forehead.
She closed her eyes and leaned against him once more.
No further explanation was necessary.
***
The night grew colder.
Khione noticed first.
A faint layer of frost had begun forming along the edges of the blanket, though she had kept her Law of Ice under control throughout the evening.
She raised her hand, and the frost disappeared.
Nero watched her.
Then he reached into his spatial ring and retrieved another blanket.
Khione accepted it with a small smile.
He draped it around her shoulders before sitting beside her again.
She moved closer until her side rested against his.
The empty plates remained scattered across the blanket, and the bottle of aged wine stood near the tree. The fire had burned down to a bed of glowing embers, casting a faint orange light across the grass.
Above them, the artificial stars shone steadily.
Khione looked at the sky.
Then she glanced at Nero.
He followed her gaze.
For a moment, they both wondered what the real night sky looked like beyond the boundaries of the pocket world.
Perhaps the stars were brighter there.
Perhaps the moon looked different.
It didn’t particularly matter.
They were here.
Together.
Khione slipped her hand into his again.
Nero intertwined their fingers.
Then she leaned against him and closed her eyes.
He rested his head against the tree and allowed his own eyes to close.
Neither was in a hurry to sleep, but neither felt the need to remain awake simply to fill the time.
They had spent the previous two days fighting, hunting, and pushing their abilities further.
Now they could rest.
They could enjoy the warmth of each other’s presence and the quiet rhythm of the river.
They could exist without needing to prove anything to anyone.
Nero gently brushed his fingers through Khione’s hair one last time.
She responded by squeezing his hand.
A faint smile crossed his face.
He had accumulated thousands of points during the trial.
He had discovered new ways to use his Laws.
He had grown stronger, more capable, and more dangerous.
Yet, sitting beneath the artificial stars with Khione resting against him, he found himself appreciating something far simpler.
Time.
Time without battles.
Time without enemies.
Time with the person he loved.
For all the power he had gained, these were the moments he wanted to keep.
Khione opened her eyes briefly and looked up at him.
Nero looked back.
She smiled.
He returned it.
Then she settled against his shoulder once more.
The river continued flowing through the valley, carrying the reflections of the artificial stars toward the distant waterfall.
And beneath the borrowed sky, the two remained together in silence, perfectly content to let the night pass at its own pace.
