Polluted Zone Live: The Useless Guide Stole the Show!
Chapter 61: The Doctor’s Favorite Mystery
"Miss Beaumont!" Dr. Rinko exclaimed the moment Summer stepped into the room. "I’m so glad all your limbs are still attached!"
Summer narrowed her eyes because that was such an odd thing to say. Still, Dr. Rinko had been a little eccentric from the beginning, so Summer decided not to question it too much.
"Captain Noctis already told me about what happened," Dr. Rinko continued. "And Miss Beaumont, the only thing I can say right now is..."
She looked Summer up and down, then suddenly clapped several times. "You are the most interesting case and one of the most amazing people I’ve ever seen in my entire career!"
"I’m really not that amazing," Summer said.
She walked over to the examination bed and sat down before Dr. Rinko even had the chance to tell her to.
"Miss Beaumont, you seriously underestimate yourself!" Dr. Rinko said. "Someone suddenly rising in rank? I’ve seen that before."
Then she leaned forward slightly, her eyes almost shining with excitement. "But someone who used to be an F-Rank Guide suddenly had two elite Sentinels wrapped around her finger?"
She clapped again. "Now that is impressive."
Summer gave her a flat look. "Maybe I just have been awakened and easy to have a relationship with people."
Dr. Rinko laughed. "Oh, I doubt that. I believe you’re such a type of person who’s hard to please." She added before Summer could say something, "But well, it’s not my place to judge your character. My job is to make sure your body is still functioning normally."
Dr. Rinko finally sat down in her chair and rolled closer to Summer. After that, she picked up a scanner from the table beside her.
"Now, let’s talk about the part that actually matters. Captain Noctis said you guided him when his pollution level was really high and unstable."
She paused for a moment before adding, "You mated with him and also had direct contact with his bodily fluids. Is that correct?"
Summer took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a moment.
Well, Dr. Rinko was a doctor anyway, and a patient was supposed to be honest with their doctor.
At last, she nodded. "That’s right."
Dr. Rinko’s cheerful expression faded slightly. "Did you feel anything strange afterward? Pain, dizziness, numbness, fever, a metallic taste in your mouth, anything?"
"No."
"Are you sure?" Dr. Rinko asked. "About the metallic taste in your mouth. Did you swallow his—"
"No, I didn’t swallow his sperm," Summer cut her off.
"Alright," Dr. Rinko said as she noted down her answer on her tablet.
"Lie down, please," Dr. Rinko said as she stood up. "I’m going to do a full-body scan on you."
Summer did as she was told and followed all the other additional procedures as well.
After almost half an hour had passed, Dr. Rinko stared at her for a few seconds before resting a hand on her chin.
"That is exactly why you’re interesting," she said.
Summer sighed. "You keep saying that."
"Because you keep giving me reasons to say it."
Before Summer could answer, Dr. Rinko showed her the results of the full-body scan.
At first, Summer did not understand what she was looking at. There were too many numbers, lines, and strange symbols covering the screen.
Then Dr. Rinko pointed at one section. "Your organs are fine, your blood looks normal, and there are no signs of damage from foreign energy," she explained.
"Even the places where Captain Noctis’s energy should have left some kind of reaction are completely stable."
Summer looked at the screen, then back at her. "So I’m fine?"
"Yes, but that is exactly the strange part."
Summer frowned because Dr. Rinko had said the same thing the last time she examined her.
Dr. Rinko enlarged another part of the scan. "Most Guides who are exposed to that much unstable Sentinel energy would show something. It could be exhaustion, fever, internal damage, or at least some kind of stress in the body."
She tapped the screen again. "But you have none of that."
Sometimes, Summer felt like every doctor in this world would be thrilled if they could find something strange inside her body.
"Miss Beaumont, I really think we should consider doing a biopsy," Dr. Rinko said. "There’s still something inside your body that the normal machines keep reading as an error."
"No biopsy," Summer said firmly. "I already told you that during our last session."
"Yes, but if we consider all the possibilities—"
"I said no." Summer cut her off before she could finish.
"You’ve already done so many tests on me, and every single one says my body is completely normal," she continued. "So maybe that’s a sign that there’s nothing wrong with me."
Dr. Rinko opened her mouth, but Summer lifted a hand before she could speak.
"I know you’re curious," Summer said. "But curiosity is not enough reason to cut a piece out of me."
Dr. Rinko slowly closed her mouth. For once, she actually looked a little embarrassed. "I wasn’t planning to take a large sample."
"That does not make it better."
"It would be really small." Dr. Rinko held her fingers close together to show just how small she meant. "You probably wouldn’t even notice any difference in your body."
Summer looked her dead in the eyes and gave the same answer. "Still no."
Dr. Rinko let out a long sigh and finally raised both hands in surrender. "Fine. No biopsy."
Summer narrowed her eyes. "You’re not going to ask again five minutes from now, right?"
Dr. Rinko sighed even louder. "No, I’m not."
Then she turned back to the screen. "And I think that’s all for today. I still can’t give you an official rank yet because you haven’t finished your mental evaluation."
"Aren’t you the one who’s going to do that for me?" Summer asked.
"Oh, absolutely not." Dr. Rinko actually shuddered. "I’m not sane enough to spend my days looking into that many people’s mental seas."
Summer stared at her for a second. Well, at least she was self-aware.
Dr. Rinko tapped a few things on her screen, and a notification appeared on Summer’s terminal.
"Your mental assessment is scheduled for one hour from now with Dr. Rory," she said. "Her room is on the top floor."
Then Dr. Rinko clicked her tongue and muttered under her breath. "What a lucky bastard."
