Chapter 183: Chapter 183: The Possibility of a Supreme Calyrex

"According to my research, energy can generally be divided into three categories."

"Life."

"Mental."

"And material."

Life energy required no explanation.

Mental energy was also easy enough to understand.

As for material energy, it referred to energy unrelated to living beings—pure physical energy.

Cosmic radiation.

Combustion.

Electricity and magnetism.

These natural phenomena were all forms of energy.

The distinction between life and matter in the Pokémon world, however, was rather subtle.

Take Regieleki, for example.

Was it a living creature...

Or was it lightning itself?

Or Pokémon like Geodude and Onix.

They looked as though rocks themselves had come alive.

So in this world...

Matter and life could transform into one another.

As for the exact mechanism...

Sora still hadn’t figured it out.

If he ever truly understood that process...

He felt he might one day create Pokémon himself, just like the ancient people had.

"Aura..."

"At its core, is resonance."

"Life resonating with life."

"Matter resonating with matter."

"In theory..."

"It should be capable of detecting any kind of energy."

Yet...

Faith was nowhere to be found.

It belonged neither to matter...

Nor to life...

Nor even to the mind.

The first two were understandable.

But if it wasn’t even mental energy...

Then Sora was completely baffled.

If it had nothing to do with the mind...

Then why call it Faith?

Wasn’t faith, by definition, something born from the hearts of living beings?

"So..."

"My Faith exists independently of all those?"

Calyrex had never considered such a possibility.

He had always assumed Faith was simply a form of spiritual energy.

"Then..."

"What exactly is it?"

"Well..."

Rubbing his chin, Sora searched through everything he knew for something comparable.

Finally...

A possibility surfaced.

"Faith may not be a form of energy at all."

"It might be..."

"A pathway."

"A pathway?"

"Exactly."

Since Aura couldn’t perceive it...

Then perhaps the most unlikely explanation was actually the correct one.

Calyrex’s Faith wasn’t a tangible energy.

It was a connection.

An invisible path linking living beings to him.

"Through this unseen connection..."

"You’re able to link yourself with other living creatures."

"And from that connection..."

"You receive strength from them."

The reasoning also worked in reverse.

Calyrex had bestowed the King’s Power upon Zacian and Zamazenta.

Making them incomparably stronger.

That implied...

The King’s Power itself ultimately originated from living beings.

Pokémon and humans alike.

The two could be converted into one another.

United.

"So instead of calling it Faith..."

"It would be more accurate to call it..."

"A contract."

"Through that contract..."

"Countless lives acknowledge your existence."

"And willingly lend you a portion of their strength."

A king was only a king...

Because the people recognized him as one.

They willingly followed him.

Contributing their own small share toward the nation.

"A contract isn’t coercion."

"It’s recognition."

"Only those who genuinely acknowledge you from the bottom of their hearts..."

"Will share their strength with you."

It resembled mutual support.

Calyrex protected Pokémon.

Pokémon supported their king.

"So Faith is capable of gathering together life..."

"Mind..."

"And matter."

That...

Was where Calyrex’s true greatness lay.

He was a Pokémon with no upper limit.

Earn the recognition of an entire forest...

And he became that forest’s king.

Then...

A kingdom.

A region.

The entire world.

If one day...

Every human and every Pokémon in existence recognized Calyrex...

Just how powerful would he become?

Perhaps...

One universe.

Several universes.

Or even...

All universes.

If Calyrex gathered together the strength of every living being throughout the entire multiverse...

Sora felt...

At that point...

Perhaps the title of omniscient and omnipotent would no longer be an exaggeration.

He still might not rival the true body of the Great One of Sinnoh...

But beneath that supreme existence...

He would undoubtedly rank among the strongest.

A truly multiversal Calyrex.

"I... do not fully understand."

"But I trust you."

Calyrex had never possessed such ambition.

He really was that simple.

The little rabbit who rode horses...

Only wished to live happily.

Everything else...

He could safely leave to Sora.

"The next thing we need to determine..."

Sora said,

"...is what the prerequisite for forming this Faith actually is."

If simply knowing Calyrex existed was enough...

Then Sora already had countless ways to make him stronger.

"Judging by the fact that our prayers were able to provide you with power..."

"Knowing about your existence must at least be a necessary condition."

"I don’t think that’s all."

Calyrex shook his head.

"The prayers all of you offered that day..."

"Did restore some of my strength."

"But compared to now..."

"The difference is enormous."

Faith wasn’t a fixed quantity.

Its strength varied.

The more devoted someone was—

Or perhaps, more accurately...

The deeper the bond they shared with Calyrex—

The greater the strength he could draw from them.

And what made Calyrex unique...

Was that although Sora and the others had offered him Faith...

None of them felt as though they had lost anything.

Which was very strange.

Sora couldn’t observe anything leaving their bodies.

Nor could he detect anything entering Calyrex’s.

"So you’re saying..."

"The Faith we’re providing is actually increasing?"

"Yes."

Calyrex nodded.

"By themselves..."

"You and those two girls..."

"Don’t contribute very much."

"Compared to them..."

"They’re the primary source."

He looked toward Ogerpon, Magearna, and Victini.

Which wasn’t surprising.

After all...

They were vastly stronger than ordinary humans.

"Mm."

"Another clue."

"The stronger the individual..."

"The more Faith they provide."

Sora pondered this for quite some time.

Eventually...

He proposed another hypothesis.

"What if..."

"What Faith gathers isn’t energy in the conventional sense..."

"But..."

"A form of existential authority?"

"Existential authority?"

"What does that mean?"

Calyrex stared blankly at Sora.

She didn’t quite understand.

"You can think of it..."

"As authority."

"The authority of a king comes from the people."

"A ruler governs because the people acknowledge his right to rule."

"The same principle applies here."

"If every individual represents one unit of authority..."

"Then once those individuals acknowledge you..."

"Wouldn’t you gain the authority to wield the strength contained within that recognition?"

"It almost feels..."

"As though you’re competing with that Great Existence over ownership of the world."

Sora quickly shook his head.

He didn’t think that was actually possible.

After all...

Calyrex was still one of that Being’s creations.

And no creation...

Could ever truly surpass its creator.
