Chapter 340: Chapter 340: Coming Straight To His Door

Julian narrowed his eyes slightly.

As Salamence’s opponent, this Poliwrath was still quite lacking.

But as Combusken’s opponent, he was very suitable.

Julian waved his hand and commanded, "Combusken, Bulk Up!"

Combusken began tensing his muscles.

Poliwrath also realised that the Combusken in front of him would not be easy to deal with.

Poliwrath could only use the move he had prepared for Salamence, even though he had not fully mastered it yet.

Poliwrath raised both hands, and a dark cloud immediately appeared in the sky.

Rain fell with a patter, nourishing Poliwrath’s body. His muscles swelled at once.

Wrapped in flowing water, he charged towards Combusken.

Waterfall!

Julian said, "Dodge. Thunder Punch."

Combusken exhaled.

Was he supposed to avoid Poliwrath’s charge?

If he did that, then all his training at Veilstone Gym would have been for nothing!

Perfect

In his spare time, Combusken had learned one of Veilstone Gym’s secret techniques from his older brothers.

Using it now was the perfect way to compete against Poliwrath.

Poliwrath charged in aggressively.

Combusken also rushed straight at him.

Julian raised an eyebrow, curious as to why Combusken had not followed his command.

In the blink of an eye, Poliwrath saw Combusken vanish from in front of him.

Then Combusken suddenly appeared at his side and slammed him away with his arm.

Julian was somewhat surprised.

"Aerial Ace? Combusken learned this too?"

Combusken was a bird Pokémon, so learning Aerial Ace was indeed a little easier for him.

Should he still let Annihilape learn a Flying-type move?

Although Annihilape could not learn Aerial Ace, he could still learn Acrobatics.

If he learned Acrobatics well, the effect would not be much worse than Aerial Ace.

Poliwrath did not understand.

Combusken should have been a Fighting-type Pokémon like him.

So why could Combusken use Aerial Ace?

Is that allowed?

Poliwrath climbed up from the ground, puffed out his chest, and fired Hydro Pump at Combusken.

Combusken kept cartwheeling across the ground, nimbly avoiding the sweep of Hydro Pump.

But the raincloud created by Rain Dance still affected Combusken.

Poliwrath stopped Hydro Pump and launched Waterfall again.

Combusken had only just regained his footing, and the rain kept stealing the heat from his body.

That made his next Aerial Ace activate just a little slower.

Meanwhile, in the rain, Poliwrath’s speed was becoming faster.

Combusken’s second use of Aerial Ace instead gave Poliwrath an opening.

Poliwrath punched him away.

Combusken landed in a muddy puddle and climbed up in a sorry state.

The rain made even Combusken’s fighting spirit weaker than usual.

Julian clenched his fist and encouraged him.

"Combusken, are you going to give up here?"

Bagon shouted, "Bagon!"

Bewear clapped her paws.

"Bewear!"

Everyone was cheering Combusken on!

A red glow lit up around Combusken’s body.

"Combusken!"

He could not possibly fall here!

Julian nodded.

"Use Flare Blitz towards the sky and break apart the raincloud!"

Golden-red flames surged out from Combusken, and his body shot into the sky wrapped in fire.

He crashed into the raincloud, and flames exploded outwards.

Scorching sunlight fell from the sky.

Combusken landed steadily on the ground, spread his arms, and looked at Poliwrath.

"Combusken!"

This move from Julian had not only shattered Poliwrath’s raincloud, it had also created a weather effect similar to Sunny Day.

Now it was Poliwrath’s turn to experience Combusken under sunlight.

Poliwrath, however, did not continue fighting Combusken. Instead, he turned and jumped into the lake.

Combusken unwillingly rushed to the lakeside and spat a pillar of fire into the water.

Apart from raising a cloud of steam, no sign of Poliwrath appeared.

Julian rubbed his head.

"Don’t rush. Poliwrath fought Salamence today and lost quite a bit of stamina. Once he recovers..."

"We’ll go to his door tomorrow and have him battle you again."

Combusken nodded.

That was all they could do.

Julian found Octavius and asked him to arrange a medic for Poliwrath so that Poliwrath could recover to full condition.

Octavius arranged it with a smile.

"Other people hope their opponents are as weak as possible, but you want yours restored to peak condition."

"I really don’t know what goes on inside your head."

Regarding Combusken’s recent condition, Julian actually had a guess.

Combusken might be close to evolving!

That was why his appetite had increased again. He was storing energy for evolution.

Julian looked at Combusken, who was still somewhat gloomy, and rubbed his head to comfort him.

"I’ll make you two extra dishes tonight, so you can eat properly."

"Then tomorrow, you can battle Poliwrath."

Combusken jumped up excitedly.

His jump exceeded three metres.

That leaping ability was actually already a sign.

Combusken ate a very full meal. After Kommo-o and Annihilape learned that Combusken was going to spar with Poliwrath tomorrow, they all gave Combusken advice.

Aerial Ace and Thunder Punch would definitely be the key to defeating Poliwrath.

But he absolutely could not use Aerial Ace casually like he had today.

Aerial Ace needed to be unexpected.

Once it was used too many times, it could no longer play a decisive role.

Fire-type moves were indeed not very effective against Poliwrath.

But they were still very useful for harassment and blocking enemy attacks.

And besides, how could Combusken not properly use such a sharp pair of claws?

During the day, Julian had not commanded seriously. More or less, he had wanted to see how Combusken would perform on his own.

Especially after Combusken used Aerial Ace, Julian had let him act freely even more.

But Combusken’s results had not been ideal.

Tonight, after his older brothers gave him advice, Combusken finally realised how many mistakes he had made in the battle during the day.

Kommo-o patted Combusken on the shoulder.

Combusken was still young and had experienced relatively few battles.

Once he battled more in the future, he would improve.

Through everyone’s explanations, Combusken’s tactical understanding of battle rose rapidly.

Compared to before, when he purely battled under Julian’s commands, Combusken was now not only thinking during battle, but also reflecting on gains and losses afterwards.

This kind of experience was a first for him.

Combusken finally understood why, while he had always been busy eating, his older brothers had seemed to be constantly thinking about something.

So they had been thinking about battles.

Combusken had always wondered how, with food this delicious in front of them, they could resist eating mouthful after mouthful like he did.

But even that confusion would be washed away by the next bite of food entering Combusken’s mouth.

That night, Combusken thought for a very long time.

He finally came up with a complete strategy to deal with Poliwrath.

Early the next morning, Julian brought the eager Combusken to eat breakfast, then went to Poliwrath’s clan.

Standing on dry ground, Combusken shouted at Poliwrath.

"Combusken!"

Poliwrath looked towards the road and saw Julian and Combusken, who was overflowing with fighting spirit.

Had he not only ruined some Berries?

There were so many more in the grove.

Was there really a need to come straight to his home to fight him?

But since Combusken had come, Poliwrath could not back down.

Poliwrath had originally wanted to challenge Salamence to protect his clan.

Since he had stepped forward, then he would start by beating Combusken first!
