Chapter 321: Chapter 321: King AZ

A/N:4/5 Bonus Chapters

-----------------------

Although they had lost quite a bit of food on the road, Julian and the others still managed to bring back roughly forty tonnes of grain from this transport mission.

This was the Kalos region, where having one village was enough to call yourself a king.

Forty tonnes of grain was already a great deal.

After delivering the grain back to the warehouse, everyone returned to the kitchen to rest.

Croconaw was still excitedly asking Mr. Mime, "Captain, we performed so well this time. I can be transferred to the army now, right?"

Mr. Mime sat tiredly in a chair, casually grabbed a carrot, rubbed it against his body, took a bite, and said, "Indeed, our performance was excellent."

"So our next mission will definitely still be transporting food."

Croconaw loudly questioned, "Why? Was my performance still not good enough?"

Julian said coldly, "Because food is important, so powerful Pokémon are needed to transport it."

When they had returned earlier, Croconaw had not seen how pained the minister’s expression was after hearing that two Machoke had died.

Croconaw also stuffed two tomatoes into his mouth.

When he bit down, scarlet juice splashed everywhere.

Bayleef frowned.

"Watch how you eat!"

Julian said calmly, "Instead of complaining about impossible things, you should strengthen yourself as much as possible before the next mission."

"Captain, I was wondering whether we could choose more ingredients suitable for us."

Croconaw also spoke confidently.

"That’s right. We risked our lives to bring these ingredients back. What’s wrong with eating a little?"

Mr. Mime glared at Combusken, then stood and looked outside the door.

"Don’t talk nonsense! What we eat is only leftover ingredients from cooking!"

Mr. Mime looked towards Oshawott.

Oshawott hurriedly waved his hands.

"I don’t know anything!"

Then Oshawott looked weakly at Mr. Mime and asked, "Can you give me a portion too?"

Bayleef suddenly stretched out a vine and tied up Quilladin, who was secretly eating food.

"Why are you in our kitchen?"

Quilladin frantically twisted his body.

"Let me down! No one arranged work for me, so I followed you back."

"Don’t worry, I won’t talk nonsense. Just give me something to eat. Anything is fine. I’m not picky, and I have a very small appetite!"

Mr. Mime frowned.

"I’ll speak to the minister later and have him stay in the kitchen."

"Right, what can you do?"

Quilladin hurriedly said, "I’m very strong. Back on the farm, I was responsible for carrying heavy things. I can also dig soil and help with ploughing."

Mr. Mime nodded.

"The minister plans to reclaim the empty land inside the castle and plant some short-growth coarse grain."

"Go report there tomorrow. Normally, you’ll sleep in the kitchen with us."

Quilladin hurriedly nodded.

"Alright, Captain!"

Mr. Mime valued Quilladin’s defensive ability.

Keeping him here meant that at critical moments, he could help everyone withstand attacks.

Combusken looked around the kitchen.

"The space here is a little small. After we finish work tomorrow, should we go help reclaim the empty land too?"

Mr. Mime thought for a moment.

"Our whole kitchen will go together. Even if we don’t go, the minister will assign it to us sooner or later anyway."

Oshawott asked weakly, "Captain, has the situation already become this bad?"

Mr. Mime’s expression turned serious.

"I originally shouldn’t tell you this, but when I went to deliver food to the minister, I overheard a sentence or two."

"This time, it isn’t only our old enemy attacking us. Even the Galarian barbarians across the sea have sent an army to attack."

Julian frowned.

"Then aren’t we being attacked from both sides?"

Mr. Mime nodded.

"Fortunately, the kingdom has a deep foundation, and the king’s bloodline is the royal blood most skilled in battle in all of Kalos."

"The king is already preparing to personally set out and crush the Galarian barbarians in one strike. After that, he’ll turn back and wipe out everyone from the rival Kingdom!"

Julian sucked in a cold breath.

Thinking about it, that seemed right.

After Floette died, AZ had actually been able to research the ultimate weapon to revive her.

No matter how one looked at it, AZ could not possibly be an ordinary person.

Over the next half month, Combusken and the others reclaimed the empty land inside the castle and planted a type of bean that only needed two months to mature.

It was not picky about soil, and its yield was not low. Aside from tasting awful, it was practically a treasure that could keep people alive.

That day, most of the castle’s army was led west by King AZ towards a place called Geosenge Town to attack the Galarian barbarians.

Julian saw AZ from afar.

AZ was still young then.

He stood at the head of the army with Floette on his shoulder, tall and imposing, his face bright with the confidence of a king at the height of his power.

This was not the weary giant Julian knew from history.

This AZ was a conqueror.

The way he carried himself made it easy to understand why his soldiers trusted him, and why his enemies feared him. He had the presence of someone who believed victory was not a hope, but the natural result of his arrival.

Floette rested quietly beside his neck.

Her presence softened him.

Julian could see it clearly. The Pokémon in the castle were treated well not simply because AZ was a gentle ruler, but because Floette cared about them.

As long as she stood on his shoulder, there was a line AZ would not cross.

Once she was gone, that line would disappear with her.

Another two and a half months passed.

Every day, Combusken diligently trained his body and flames. He believed he would soon reach the limit of this stage as a Combusken.

That day, a human soldier rode a Rapidash into the castle.

"Great victory! Great victory! The king successfully drove all two thousand Galarian barbarians into the sea and is returning to Shalour Castle!"

Driving them into the sea did not mean letting the Galarian barbarians escape.

It meant defeating them, then throwing them all into the sea to dispose of them.

Croconaw looked at the soldier with envy.

"I really want to see with my own eyes just how powerful King AZ is!"

AZ returned to the castle three days later, and a grand celebration was held.

That was because after hearing of King AZ’s feat, the army of the rival Kingdom had voluntarily retreated.

This war was already over.

Julian, however, only ate a little before walking to the city wall in a restless mood.

A Weavile also walked up onto the wall.

"Combusken, you feel something wrong too?"

This Weavile was the Sneasel from the bakery kitchen after evolving.

Julian nodded.

"It feels very similar to what we sensed at the orchard last time. The enemy is hidden in the dark, ready to launch a fatal strike against us at any moment."

Weavile gathered a Shadow Ball in his hand and threw it below the castle.

The noise from the explosion did not make even one soldier alert.

Because everyone was celebrating noisily, that bit of commotion was not noticeable at all.

Purple light bloomed.

Julian keenly saw something in the grass below the castle reflect the light of the Shadow Ball.

He opened his mouth and spat scorching Ember into the grass.

Several sparks crossed the hundred-metre distance and landed in the grass.

The flash of silver shields immediately made Weavile’s eyes change.

Julian said seriously, "You go call reinforcements again. Leave this place to me!"
