Old Sofu lived on Poni Ancient Path, where he ran a farm along the mountain road.
There was a large field planted full of fresh, juicy Poni radishes.
Seeing Mohn arrive with his family, Sofu, who was working in the field, enthusiastically waved the large radish in his hand.
"Mohn, come and try one! These Poni radishes have just ripened!"
The professor smiled and said, "Old man, how did you know I came here just for a bite of your Poni radish?"
Mohn introduced him to Julian.
"The radishes grown on Poni Island are the best in all of Alola, and old Sofu’s skill is the best on Poni Island!"
Sofu tossed the radish in his hand to Mohn and laughed.
"Stop flattering me. Hurry up and wash it. The two little ones can’t wait to eat."
Poni radishes were truly big, long, and white.
After washing away the dirt on the skin, Mohn brought the knife down cleanly and cut the Poni radish into thick slices.
The juicy radish carried a unique, refreshing sweetness.
For the children, he removed the slightly spicy part near the skin. Even Lillie hugged a slice of radish and ate with her eyes narrowed.
"So sweet!"
Gladion attacked from both sides, holding one slice of radish in each hand and taking bites from left and right.
"Delicious! I like Grandpa Sofu’s radishes the most!"
Sofu chuckled.
"If you like them, eat more."
Cynthia also took a slice. When she bit down, there was a crisp crunch.
It was crunchy and sweet.
The slight spice near the skin added another layer to the texture.
Cynthia nodded in satisfaction.
"This really is the best radish I’ve ever eaten."
Julian ate a slice and smiled.
"This kind of radish would be excellent in soup. Stewed with meat, preferably with an old hen raised for at least three years."
"If making a vegetarian soup, you could add soaked dried shiitake mushrooms, corn, and kelp. The umami from the mushrooms and kelp would replace the meat, and the sweetness of the radish itself would stand out even more."
Sofu nodded.
"Mohn, the young man you brought today isn’t bad. He’s a proper food expert!"
"He only took one bite of Poni radish and already came up with a way to cook it. I happen to have corn planted here too, and I cut some kelp by the sea this morning."
"There are dried shiitake mushrooms at home as well. Young man, why don’t you show off your cooking? If the soup you make isn’t good, I won’t help you."
People said old age brought wisdom. Before Mohn had even spoken, Sofu had already roughly guessed why they had come.
Two young Trainers who looked obviously strong had come looking for him, the island kahuna. What else could it be for?
Julian smiled faintly and took various cooking utensils from his backpack.
He directly set up a temporary kitchen beside the field.
"Old man, would you mind if I first took a look at the kelp and shiitake mushrooms?"
Sofu nodded.
"Follow me."
Beside the field were three wooden buildings: a bedroom, a living room, and a kitchen.
Inside the kitchen were all kinds of ingredients Sofu had collected. He also cooked here regularly.
There were quite a few treasures from both mountain and sea!
Julian ignored the others and calmly selected the kelp and dried shiitake mushrooms.
First, he washed away the dirt on the surface of the mushrooms. Then he covered them with forty-five-degree warm water, added a spoon of sugar and a spoon of starch, and shook them rapidly for ten seconds.
Then he let them soak for twenty minutes.
After that, Julian went out to choose corn and large radishes.
Seeing the ingredients Julian selected, Sofu nodded in satisfaction.
Good eye
Enough to gain the approval of him, the island kahuna.
By the time Julian had prepared the radish and corn, the shiitake mushrooms were almost soaked.
He sliced the mushrooms, then added ginger slices and a thin layer of oil to bring out their fragrance.
Then he took the clear upper layer of the mushroom soaking water and mixed it with spring water, adding corn, radish, and six pitted red dates to stew together.
After bringing it to a boil over high heat, he skimmed off the foam, then turned it to low heat and simmered it for thirty minutes.
A rich aroma spread out, making Gladion and Lillie keep twitching their noses.
Just as the soup was finished, a bright, energetic girl’s voice rang out.
"Grandpa, I smelled something delicious! What are you secretly eating this time?"
Sofu cheerfully said, "Come in, Hapu. Today, Grandpa isn’t the one cooking. This guest made it."
With this many people, one pot of soup was definitely not enough, so Julian also made scallion oil noodles!
The noodles were a local speciality he had brought back from Paldea last time.
Julian had discovered that this firmer type of noodle, once cooked and mixed with his scallion oil, tasted no worse than Paldea’s ragu.
This Paldean noodle was rather similar to pasta.
But Julian still preferred adapting the flavour a little more to his own taste.
He boiled the noodles, drizzled them with scallion oil, added salt, and mixed them evenly.
"Please enjoy. Scallion oil noodles. They pair perfectly with this corn, radish, and kelp soup."
Mohn took one sip of soup and one bite of noodles, then directly gave Julian a thumbs up.
After tasting the noodles, Sofu drank a mouthful of soup and nodded in satisfaction.
"To make food like this... young man, you have gained the recognition of me, Sofu, the island kahuna of Poni Island."
"I can taste the feelings you poured into your food. Tell me why you came."
After Julian explained the situation, Sofu looked somewhat conflicted.
"Tapu Fini is not easy to meet. I’ve been the island kahuna for decades, but I’ve seen Tapu Fini fewer than ten times."
"Unless it’s an especially important matter, Tapu Fini won’t show itself."
Cynthia frowned and asked, "Is there really no way to meet Tapu Fini?"
Sofu stroked his beard and looked at the scallion oil noodles in front of him.
"With noodles this delicious, how could I not give you an idea?"
Hapu ate the scallion oil noodles in big mouthfuls, nodding constantly in satisfaction.
Looking at his granddaughter, Sofu showed a kind smile.
"There are two Totem Pokémon on Poni Island. Those two Pokémon can meet Tapu Fini several times a year."
"Tapu Fini understands the situation on Poni Island through them."
Julian nodded.
"Old man, you mean I should use the same method to gain the friendship of the two Totem Pokémon, then ask them to bring me to Tapu Fini?"
Sofu nodded.
"They won’t be as easy to convince as me. You’ll need to defeat them in battle first, then become friends with them."
Cynthia immediately asked, "What Pokémon are the two Totems, and where are they?"
Use this:
Cynthia was not an impatient person.
She simply understood Julian well enough to know when he needed someone else to ask the sharper questions.
He had come here to ask for help. Pressing too hard himself would make him seem demanding.
If Cynthia asked instead, it gave him room to stay respectful without letting the conversation stall.
Sofu said unhurriedly, "Don’t rush. If you want to meet Tapu Fini, the most important thing is patience!"
"The two Totems are Ribombee and Kommo-o. Which trial do you plan to choose first?"
"Ribombee is in the flower field near the safe Seafolk Village. Kommo-o is deep within the dangerous Poni Canyon."
Julian took out a Poké Ball and released Hakamo-o.
"I choose Totem Kommo-o!"
Sofu nodded approvingly.
"Using Hakamo-o to challenge Totem Kommo-o? Very interesting choice."
