Plugged In: Reincarnated As A Demon Lord (Now I'll Conquer The World)
Chapter 61: Testing The Trial Period
The clearing is still settling around them, bark dust drifting down in slow, lazy spirals from the tree she just tore through, a felled branch still creaking somewhere off in the dark as it finishes falling, the after-tingle of whatever divine transformation just took place prickling along Lucien’s bare skin like static clinging to him even now.
He’s fully, distantly aware that he is standing naked in the middle of a forest that doesn’t exist on any map he’s ever seen, in front of a demigoddess who was, ninety seconds ago, a wolf the approximate size of public transit.
He decides, on reflection, almost idly, that this is roughly average for a Tuesday since his resurrection.
Maybe slightly above average.
The Beast Mother looks him up and down, slow and unhurried, cataloguing him the way a butcher might size up a particularly unusual, possibly interesting cut of meat, smirk widening the longer she takes over it.
"Are you insane?" she asks, voice layered with a slight growl, "Or just stupid?"
Lucien chuckles, rolling one shoulder like he’s shaking off the question. "That’s come up a lot lately, that particular query. But I promise, I am many things, but never stupid. Reckless, certainly. Occasionally self-destructive in the short term. Never stupid."
She averts her gaze a moment, some private thought crossing behind her eyes, collecting herself before turning back to face him properly.
"Good. You don’t taste like stupid." She says, considering, tongue flicking briefly along one fang. "You taste... interesting."
"Lucky for you," he says, spreading both hands slightly, "I happen to be a very interesting person. Layered. Lots to learn. Lots to experience, if given the chance." He shifts his weight, hands settling comfortably on his hips, entirely unbothered by that his member was dangly directly at her eye level.
"I’ve been watching you all week, you know." She says, biting back a laugh at the sheer nerve of him, shaking her head slightly. "Most interesting thing to wander into my land in a very long while. Perhaps also the maddest."
Then, in a blur too fast to properly track, her clawed hand closes around him... intimately.
He yelps, a high, entirely undignified sound that echoes off the surrounding treeline and probably carries for miles. But he holds his ground regardless, smiling through gritted teeth, refusing to flinch even as sweat beads fast along his temple.
Her grip is warm, impossibly strong, claws resting just shy of actually breaking skin, and every animal instinct screaming somewhere in the back of his skull tells him that one wrong twitch from her ends this entire business venture, his manhood, and quite possibly his life, before it properly starts.
"I saw how interesting you are," she says, voice dropping low, almost purring now. "Plowing through the women of my land, one after another. Every last one of them singing your name afterward." A slow shrug, claws flexing just slightly against him thigh, enough to make his breath catch sharp in his throat. "Cute. I don’t care much about cute."
"I respect your position," he manages, voice noticeably strained now. "And I appreciate the observation, genuinely. Might I kindly request a gentler grip, though?" he asks, smiling, gesturing with his eyes to her massive hand wrapped firmly around his most intimate possessions. "I’m rather attached to... all of it. It’s an important assest."
She laughs despite herself, a real laugh this time, and lets go of him entirely.
"Not generally how handshakes go, where I’m from." He exhales hard, doubling over for a long second to properly catch his breath, both hands braced on his own knees. "But I’ll allow it. As a professional courtesy."
She laughs again at that, and she rises in front of him then, unfolding to her full height.
Taller than him by a considerable margin, built like a monument to raw power and fertility both at once, breasts that defy physics outright, thighs that could crush kingdoms without much effort, a body built equally for breeding and for mass destruction, and clearly capable of both without missing a step between them.
Moonlight catches along the black sheen of her fur as she moves, every muscle underneath it shifting like something coiled and endlessly patient, and Lucien finds himself cataloguing every inch of it with the same helpless, thorough attention he usually reserves for particularly promising business ledgers.
Her ears swivel toward some faint sound in the forest he can’t hear at all, tracking it automatically, and even that small, idle motion carries an unmistakable weight of command behind it.
He shudders as she looms over him properly now, eyes like a pair of black holes hungry to swallow him whole, and for the first time all night he seriously, genuinely entertains the idea that this particular negotiation might actually be the one that kills him.
"Apologies in advance," he says, voice only slightly trembling now, "if my body reacts unprofessionally to any of this. I am, unfortunately, only mortal, and you are, quite unfairly, an enormous amount to take in all at once."
A huffed grin curls over her fangs in response, muscle rippling visibly across her whole frame, and he gulps audibly at the sight.
"I-I was hoping to discuss a business opportunity, actually," he manages, pressing forward despite himself. "Between the Ashlands and the tribelands, specifically—"
A massive clawed paw settles heavily over the top of his head, stopping him mid-sentence.
He freezes completely, falling silent at once, and gulps harder still as she tilts her head back, gazing up past him at the star-strewn sky instead, apparently no longer particularly interested in whatever he’d been about to say.
"I live for two things," she says, soft now, almost distant. "The hunt. And my hunting grounds." Her gaze drifts slowly across the treetops, the moonlit canopy stretching in every direction, the whole silent cathedral of the forest surrounding them both. "Everything else is a distraction. Mortals and their fleeting little wants included. I’ve lived this way for eons... since long before the gods ever decided to scatter mortals across my lands and task me with keeping them."
"Sounds lovely," he says carefully. "Noble, even, put that way. But if you’d just take a moment to actually hear—"
"I know every living thing that’s ever crossed this domain," she cuts in smoothly, not remotely interested in letting him finish. "Mortal and divine alike, every single one. The smell of them. The taste. The exact texture of everything that breathes here, down to the last detail."
He keeps his eyes locked firmly on hers throughout, physically restraining himself from letting his gaze drop anywhere else across her body, however briefly.
She tilts her head at that, genuinely intrigued now, like a curious puppy sizing up something new. "I’ve never tasted anything quite like you before. Not once, in all my years."
His grin widens immediately. "I’ve got a whole kitchen of flavors for you to sample properly, if you’d just give me—"
"Never tasted a demon lord, either," she continues, entirely unbothered by the interruption, talking straight over him. "None have ever dared set foot here before you. You’re the first."
She lifts him clean off the ground by the head without further warning, sniffing him over thoroughly from every angle. Along his throat first, then his collarbone, down the full length of one arm, and across his chest.
Her nose brushes cold against his skin with each pass, breath warm and heavy right behind it every time, and every single hair on his body stands on end. Their eyes meet at one point mid-inspection, and Lucien bites his lip hard enough to nearly draw blood, eyes watering slightly from the effort.
She assumes, for a moment, watching his face, that he’s simply panicking.
Then she glances down further and spots exactly what his body is actually, quite visibly doing about the whole situation as Lucien tries hopelessly to hide a blossoming erection.
She bites back a laugh immediately.
"I assure you!" He apologizes at once, profusely, "I know precisely how unprofessional this is under the circumstances, but your body is quite literally divine and I am quite literally not, and there’s only so much a mortal constitution can reasonably be expected to control."
He smiles up at her innocently, seemingly unbothered, all the while, by the fact that a wolf-woman twice his size is currently holding him up entirely by his own scalp.
The Beast Mother cackle a laugh at that, sets him back down onto his feet, and begins circling him slowly, carefully, the way a predator circles something it’s already privately decided isn’t going anywhere in a hurry.
Her tail drags lazily through the grass behind her with each pass, claws leaving faint, curling crevices in the earth as she moves, and Lucien turns carefully in place to keep facing her the whole time, entirely too aware of exactly how thoroughly outmatched he is in every conceivable category except, perhaps, sheer, stubborn resolve.
And his way with words.
"You’re funny, if nothing else." she says. "But if you truly are the Demon Lord, you understand I have little real choice but to kill you. Regardless of how entertaining you’ve been so far."
Both his hands shoot up at once. "I’ve heard as much, believe me. But I’m not like the others before me. I swear it, on whatever you’d like me to swear on."
"A demon lord’s word means nothing at all," she says, chuckling low. "And even supposing you’re telling the truth, I kill you on principle regardless. I can’t be known to let one roam my lands freely, whatever his personal intentions might be. Reputation matters, even for goddesses."
"Fair," he says, nodding slowly. "Can’t argue the logic there, honestly. But if you’ll give me just a moment more, I might have something to offer that genuinely benefits us both."
She looks him over one final time, steps in close enough that her shadow swallows him whole entirely, and licks him from chin to forehead in one long, deliberate, unhurried stroke, tongue warm and rough as sandpaper dragged slowly through honey.
He blinks hard, swaying slightly on his feet from the sheer sensation of it.
"You need to stop doing that." he says, fighting back a smile that threatens to ignite his face, "I’m starting to genuinely like it. A lot."
She cackles again, shoving him back, gently, by her considerable standards, though it still sends him stumbling a full three steps across the grass,
"Stop with the jokes." She demands, one clawed hand pressed to her own ribs.
"Just talking," he says, shrugging easily. "I did warn you earlier, I love it. Can’t really help myself."
She shakes her head slowly. "You taste so strange. Strangest mortal I’ve ever encountered, in all my years here." She looks him over again, considering. "I know the taste of everything, you understand. Even feelings, given the right attention. Demon lords are always built around a single one, without exception. Rage, lust, pride, greed. Never more than one, or so the stories go."
"So what am I, then?"
"All of it. And none of it, somehow, at the same time." She licks her lips slowly, reaching for some lingering taste of him. "If I had to put a single name to it... ambition. The very essence of it, distilled down. Strong." A small, sharp smile spreading on lips. "Spicy, actually, now that I properly think about it."
He beams at that, entirely too pleased with himself, chest puffing out visibly like he’s just received a glowing performance review from the single most terrifying supervisor he’s ever had the pleasure of working under.
She notices, chuckling, shaking her head slowly at the reaction. "Who are you, really? Underneath all of... this."
"Lucien Vale. Long story, honestly. Right now, Demon Lord of the Ashlands, trying to build an empire that—"
She waves him off mid-sentence, entirely unmoved. "Can’t let you leave here alive while you keep insisting on that particular title, you understand. Rules are rules." A pause, something almost fond creeping into her expression despite the words. "Pity, really. You make me laugh. I like that about you, whatever else you are."
She looks him over one very last time, claws tapping idly against her own thigh, something almost like genuine curiosity flickering behind those black-hole eyes... the first real crack, however small, in several thousand years of unbroken indifference toward anything that happens to actually die when she kills it.
"For making me laugh..." she purrs, "five minutes."
She settles back onto her haunches at last, tail curling neatly around her feet, the picture of a predator granting a temporary stay of execution purely because the entertainment’s been genuinely decent so far tonight.
"Say your piece, Lucien Vale. And make it count."
