Lucien and Kamiko linger at the threshold of her room, the introductory meeting officially concluded.

The smoky haze has returned, curtains drawn back just enough to let a slice of moonlight cut across the floor, and her twin tails have clearly not received word that negotiations are over as they twirl lazily around his leg, one looping higher than strictly necessary, like she’s not quite ready to let the deal end here.

"I’ve never heard of half of what you just described," she says, tilting her head, studying him with the particular fondness of a woman who suspects she’s just been thoroughly, expertly played and doesn’t mind nearly as much as she should. "And honestly, I don’t believe half of that could ever actually happen. Roads through three separate territories. A standing garrison funded by trade tax. A postal system, for gods’ sake."

Lucien reaches up, tracing a slow finger along the line of her jaw, unbothered by the skepticism. "I’ve heard those exact words from countless people before you." His voice drops, easy and warm. "Every last one of them ended up working for me. Or crushed under my ambition. There isn’t really a third option, in my experience."

"And the ones that end up in your bed?"

"I supposed there have been exceptions." A small, knowing smile. "Rare ones. Memorableones."

She bites her lip, gaze dropping briefly to his mouth before dragging back up. "I look forward to our next meeting, then. Especially the finer details of that friends-with-benefits arrangement you mentioned earlier." One tail curls higher, brushing deliberately behind his knee. "Sounds like a lucrative deal for both of us."

"You’re going to love the benefits," he says, grinning like the devil.

"Are there many?"

"Just the one, really." He leans in slightly. "A big one."

She laughs, low and delighted, and slaps his chest hard enough to rock him back a step, ordering him out of her room before she does something she’ll regret in the morning.

He sighs, theatrical, already backing toward the door with his hands raised in mock surrender. "Pity. I had some very regrettable things in mind for tonight."

She snorts a laugh, grabs his shoulder, and shoves him through the doorway. The last thing he sees before the door swings shut is her sinking back into the chaise, still chuckling to herself, one tail flicking lazily through the air like a cat pleased with the evening’s hunt.

Lucien strolls out through the front room with his hands in his pockets, swagger fully restored, grinning, a man completely satisfied with the first deal that would build his empire.

Behind him, a small platoon of exhausted, thoroughly satisfied women lean out of the doors they pass to wave him off, and he waves back at each one individually, leaving a trail of swooning and goodbye kisses behind him.

Serenith is waiting by the front desk, arms crossed, wings tucked in tight, wearing the exact expression of a woman who has had several hours to compose a lecture and is very much looking forward to delivering it.

"I genuinely cannot believe this," she says, falling into step beside him the moment they’re through the door and out into the cool night air. "Three hours of methodically breaking beast-kin backs, and somehow that translates into a foothold in the regional market through a well-connected brothel owner. You didn’t even sleep with her."

He raises a finger, as if defending an accusation buried in her tone. "We’re still discussing the friends-with-benefits clause. I’ll be in that bed soon enough. These things take take time."

She groans, dragging a hand down her face. "Of course. My mistake. Forgive my doubt."

"Forgiven," he says warmly, slinging an arm loosely through the air beside her, not quite touching, since she’d probably combust, as they walk. "It’s been a long day. I’m starving. Let’s find food."

"That," Serenith says, "is the single smartest sentence you’ve spoken all day. Possibly since we left the Ashlands.."

The street outside the brothel has gone quiet, most of the village long since retired for the night, lanterns flickering low along the posts of shuttered stalls, the occasional distant bark of a dog the only sound besides their own footsteps on packed dirt.

Lucien walks with his head half-turned toward the sky, already deep in mental calculation. Trade margins, staffing costs, exactly what a two-tailed Kitsune with powerful illusion magic is capable of in bed.

He barely notices the wolf-kin rounding the corner ahead of them until she yelps and jumps back a full step, nearly dropping the small bundle she’s carrying.

He looks up, recognizes her instantly. The scruffy furred, gold-flecked eyed wolf-girl he saved three days ago.

"Oh, hey! You’re that wolf—"

She stiffens visibly, shoulders hunching, tail curling tight against her leg.

He stops walking, head tilting. "What’s wrong?"

"A-Are you stalking me?"

His jaw drops open.

Behind him, Serenith bursts out laughing, attempts to stop herself, and just ends up making it worse.

"I’m on business," he says, hand pressed to his chest, thoroughly affronted.

"In a brothel?" she says, one eyebrow arching skeptically.

"Yes. Business. And the other type of business. Lots of business activities, actually. Multiple kinds, all very legitimate." He sniffs, turning his nose up half an inch. "I don’t owe an unappreciative wolf-kin an explanation."

He turns his nose up fully and starts to walk off, his ego thoroughly rattled.

she scrambles after him almost immediately, "Wait! wait! I’m sorry." she apologizes in a rush, "Thank you! Again. For the rescue." she adds, genuinely. And then, slightly sheepish, she says,"I’m sorry if I offended you, but, you’re just really, truly weird, and it’s thrown me off my usual manners. Please, forgive me."

Serenith snickers, drifting along above them both. "I like her already."

Lucien gasps, wounded to his very core, one hand flying to his heart. "I refuse to stand for this slander! I left two dozen women screaming my name today and laid the first brick of my empire beyond the Ashlands in the same afternoon. I will not let one tiny, rude wolf-kin spoil the achievement." He gives her a curt, formal nod. "Good. Day!"

He storms off and makes it about three strides before Kamiko’s voice comes drifting down from a window above them, warm and amused.

He turns to find her leaning half out of it, gown slipping loose off one shoulder, silhouette framed by candlelight, grinning down at the pair of them like she’s been watching the whole exchange and thoroughly enjoying it.

"If you need anything in town," she calls, "talk to the wolf-girl standing beside you. She works for me. She’ll show you around, get you whatever you need, keep you out of trouble... assuming that’s even possible."

The wolf-kin’s whole face falls, ears drooping flat. "Please don’t make me babysit the weird guy!"

"I can hear you!" Lucien gasps, glancing sideward. "You’re standing right next to me."

"He’s my honoured guest," Kamiko coos from the window, "and by extension, an honored guest of the entire village, to be treated accordingly, no exceptions." She turns a pair of enormous, deliberately pitiful eyes on the wolf-kin below. "You wouldn’t want to upset your Madam, would you, Brin?"

The wolf-kin’s tail drops flat against the backs of her legs, ears pinning further. "Of course not, Lady K." She bows, resigned to her fate, shoulders slumping.

Kamiko turns her attention back to Lucien. "I eagerly await our next meeting." she reminds him, voice dropping low and syrupy before flashing him a brief, deliberate glimpse of skin as she tugs the gown back into place.

He gasps, clutches his chest theatrically, staggers half a step like he’s been physically struck, and "Tomorrow!" he calls out, hand over his heart, "I promise, Madam. On my heart!"

"Till then..." Kamiko calls back, laughing fondly, and disappears back into the room, curtain falling shut behind her.

Serenith throws both hands up into the night air, entirely speechless, wings flaring in pure exasperation.

The wolf-kin clears her throat.

"I’m Brina. I work in Lady Kamiko’s employ." She introduces herself properly this time, straightening her spine and offering a small, formal bow.

Lucien looks her over properly for the first time, scruffy in an oddly adorable way, fur a touch unkempt, clothes practical rather than decorative, cocking a brow, genuinely surprised. Nothing about her screams brothel.

"You don’t look like a—"

"I’m not," she says quickly, pouting slightly at the implication. "Lady Kamiko has businesses all across town, a few nearby villages too. I mostly run messages between them. Means I know the area pretty well... roads, shortcuts, who to trust and who to avoid."

"Oh... well then." Lucien says, beaming, already extending a hand. "We’re going to be great friends,"

"Do I get benefits too?" she asks, shaking it, clearly and entirely missing the implication behind the word.

Serenith bites back a laugh hard enough to make a small, strangled sound.

"Entirely up to you," Lucien says, delighted, eyes glinting.

She shrugs, unbothered. "I like benefits."

"I’m addicted to them," he says solemnly. "Might be my favorite thing in existence, if I’m being honest. I basically run off the stuff."

"What exactly are the benefits of your friendship, then?" She frowns at him, genuinely puzzled by his amusement, tail giving a confused twitch.

"Plenty of time to get into the details," he says, patting her shoulder as they start walking together, falling into an easy pace down the quiet street. "Right now I need to make sure my business partner hasn’t eaten any of the villagers while I was occupied."

She laughs, a short, surprised bark of a sound, then notices, a second later, that he isn’t laughing along with her, and asks, slowly, warily, if he’s actually serious.

He holds the look a moment too long, solemn, letting the silence stretch just past comfortable, before breaking into a wide grin. "No. But better safe than sorry. Val’s had a long day too."

Brina gulps audibly and falls into step beside him, hurrying to keep up, ears swiveling nervously toward every closed door and darkened window they pass, as though already bracing herself for the very real possibility of a half-eaten villager.
