Chapter 517 - The Land of War.
Chapter 517: The Land of War.
The sunshine was obscured making the sky seem like a long-lasting haze. It was grey and depressing, with numerous buildings destroyed by artillery bombardment everywhere. The Gobi desert expanded into part of Libya, but it was only covered in dust as the wind would blow them all over the sky adding to the already dreary atmosphere.
Five military vehicles, trailing each other as they roared down the road. If one was to look at them from the sky, the vehicles would look like a long snake. Inside the vehicles were the special operations team and, of course, Xiao Luo.
At the very end of the tail was a Jiefang truck, with twelve soldiers riding on it. The other four vehicles were jeeps, each jeep carried four people. If one was to add all the people in all five vehicles, the number almost reached thirty. It was basically a platoon of troops.
This was a land of war, a real battlefield. Everyone was armed to the teeth. Xiao Luo was wearing a camouflage uniform, a bulletproof vest and a military helmet. He was also equipped with a sniper rifle, and several grenades on him.
The China flag swayed in the wind on the very front military jeep. The white forces – that is the government forces– in Libya, would not attack the foreign soldiers who entered the hinterland of Libya to evacuate people. They couldn’t make enemies with these foreign forces because the added pressure from the black forces’ tremendous pressure would make the situation unfavorable to them.
“The rebels in Libya are often unprincipled. As long as someone is not their own, they will immediately target them.”
Inside the second to the front military jeep, Jiang Zhiming told Xiao Luo. He was cleared about the situation because it was not the first time that he led the team to evacuate overseas Chinese. Nevertheless, it was also his first time to travel this far to meet his compatriots in Steining City.
Xiao Luo nodded to show that he understood. As he looked out of the window, he would occasionally see the rotting bodies of civilians on the roadsides, attracting many flies with its decomposing corpses.
He also saw some fleeing Libians. Their clothes were ragged and their bodies were covered with a thick layer of dust. Their eyes were full of fear, dull, numb and lifeless, despairing amidst the world they’re in.
Most of them were scarred by war and death, so when they realized that military vehicles were passing by, they subconsciously raised their hands to surrender…
Seeing these scenes, it was impossible to say that Xiao Luo felt nothing in his heart. Being under the same sky and living together in a civilized world, people in most countries could live a comfortable life without worrying all the time about losing their lives. But in this corner of the world, this war-torn land, the people here were displaced and separated from each other, just like rootless weeds swaying in the wind. They didn’t know where they’d end up or where to seek refuge. Perhaps at some point in the future, they would also become corpses, disappearing from this world forever, and become a wisp of dead souls in the war.
“No one knows the cruelty of war better than us. Only after experiencing war will we understand the value of peace!” Jiang Zhiming sighed.
“Don’t think too much…” Xiao Luo suddenly comforted, “We only need to remember our respective tasks, and everything else is regarded as a cloud that dissipates at a glance.”
As long as he had some humanity, he would be touched by the tragic images here in Libya, but it was only a feeling. He had no energy to spare and didn’t want to worry so much about it. He was not superman. Besides, other than Libya, there were many tragedies happening in the world. So if you worry and keep on sighing, won’t you worry yourself to death?
Jiang Zhiming nodded his head in approval. Indeed, they were not the almighty savior. They just have to complete their tasks well. They didn’t need to put much care and attention to other matters. Even if they sighed and felt for the people and their situation, it wouldn’t change anything.
“Mr. Mei, I heard that all the people from NSA are capable. You must be very powerful, right?”
Sitting in the front passenger seat, a soldier turned to Xiao Luo excitedly. He had an immature face. This man was already introduced by Jiang Zhiming before, his name was Kong Yunhong, and he was Jiang Zhiming’s deputy.
Xiao Luo smiled but didn’t answer.
Kong Yunhong continued with a smile, “You have a sniper rifle with you, you must be very good at this. Our captain is also good. Once, he shot and killed the head of the Blue Army from a kilometer away and accomplished the assassination excellently. He then escaped from the encirclement of hundreds of people from the Blue Army, and made the Blue Army think that they had encountered a ghost because they found no trace of him. From then on, Captain was crowned with the title ‘Ghost Killer’.”
“Ahem…”
Jiang Zhiming gave a dry cough and reprimanded with a straight face. “Why do you love gossip so much? Will you die if you don’t talk?”
Jiang Zhiming was not some flamboyant arrogant person that could just flaunt his achievements. Moreover, his intuition told him that this NSA Mei was not simple. Normally, soldiers venturing deep into the hinterland of Libya would feel more or less nervous. However, this Mr. Mie appeared unaffected and extremely calm, as if he was already accustomed to such scenes. Such a reaction could not be feigned. In addition, his eyes were also good at measuring people.
“How can this be called gossip? What I said was the truth.”
Kong Yunhong frowned and waved his hand innocently. His relationship with Jiang Zhiming was very close, so he wasn’t really scared by Jiang Zhiming’s scolding appearance.
“All right, shut your mouth. If you have nothing to do, then sleep instead of talking.” Jiang Zhiming said.
Kong Yunhong said, “Captain, you know that this is a land of war. How can I sleep? I won’t even know it when I get shot.”
“At least you know that you can die at any time.”
Jiang Zhiming shook his head and said with a light snort.
But when he turned around, he suddenly saw Xiao Luo leaning against the window and seemed to be asleep!
Oh my dear uncle, this Mei gentleman has some big balls to actually sleep!
Kong Yunhong was shocked with his mouth wide open. Jiang Zhiming also felt distressed. If he was his subordinate, he would’ve already slapped him in the face … but Xiao Luo wasn’t. Plus, their tasks were different. He couldn’t do anything to Xiao Luo even if he wanted to.
Of course Xiao Luo was not really sleeping. He just did this to have some peace and quiet inside the care. Jiang Zhiming was fine, but this Kong Yunhong was one noisy cricket.
And it seemed that his method was very effective as the car soon became quiet.
He opened his eyes again, and paid close attention to the situation outside. After arriving at the edge of the Gobi Desert, the ground was slowly turning into drought-resistant vegetation. After driving for nearly three kilometers, he found that there was a sign on the roadside engraved with some special symbols. As they kept moving forward, another sign appeared again, with the same special symbols inscriptions.
Xiao Luo had a bad feeling and immediately shouted, “Stop!”
Almost at the same time, a situation occurred…
