Chapter 192: …We’ve Been Here Before
ADRIEN’S POV
"Not just in the state," Niko says, zooming in on the satellite map grid. "Look at the property registration tied to that local tower sector. It’s a small residential parcel listed under an old corporate alias."
I stare at the address, the familiar letters burning into my mind and sending a sharp, icy chill through my chest.
She’s not at that lake house...she’s at the other one.
"That is my mother’s old property," I whisper, my throat constricting so tightly I can barely force the words out. "Alice took control of it after she died. She told my father that she sold it because she didn’t think we would need it anymore."
"She lied," Orion says softly, his voice cutting through the hum of the computers. "She kept the house off the main record of your family’s assets as a quiet place to store things... or hide people."
The realization hits me like a physical blow to the solar plexus.
Alice was perceptive enough to recognize the danger of this scandal before the rest of us even realized the weight of it.
She saw that a public attack on the Vassilis family would trigger a swift, violent response from Orion. So she scrubbed her personal records, pulled her assets, and left Louise behind at a house only family members would know about.
Alice left her to take the immediate fallout. She used her own daughter as a human shield to buy herself time to vanish.
"She abandoned her," I say, the words coming out flat, devoid of any warmth or surprise. "Alice left Louise at the lake house to face whatever comes."
"It changes nothing about the threat," Orion says, his voice cold, steady, and immovable. "Louise is still the person sitting at those coordinates. She is still the one who gave the go-ahead for that media leak."
"We go there now," I say, turning on my heel toward the exit.
Orion catches my arm, his grip firm and unyielding, holding me in place before I can take a single step.
"You don’t walk in alone, Adrien," he says, his pupil-less eyes locking onto mine with an absolute, terrifying weight. "My men will surround the property. Niko will secure the entrance. You will stay behind me until the house is completely clear."
"I am not sitting in a car down the road while you and your men storm the building," I say, pulling against his grip, but his fingers do not budge an inch.
"You will be present," Orion says, his voice leaving no room for argument or debate. "You will get your confrontation. But you will not put yourself in a position where she can pull a trigger on you. Do you understand me?"
I look at him, seeing the line he has drawn. He is allowing me to face Louise, but he will not give up control over the tactical reality of the situation. He is still the same Orion, still the man who manages threats with dangerous precision.
"Fine," I say softly, the word bitter on my tongue. "Just promise me you won’t kill her the moment the front door opens."
Orion doesn’t make promises. He simply releases my arm, dropping his hand back to his side, and turns to Niko.
"Get two units ready," Orion commands. "We move on to the location immediately."
Niko nods, his sarcastic grin completely gone as he begins giving quiet, sharp instructions into his headset, his voice dropping into the professional tone of a man who deals in violence.
As the intelligence center breaks into rapid, controlled motion, with men checking gear, double-checking weapon clips, and pulling up blueprints of the lake house property, I walk over to the wide glass window overlooking the city below.
The rain has stopped outside, but the sky remains a heavy, bruised grey, hanging low over the skyscrapers like a dark sheet.
I look at my reflection in the glass. I look pale but healthy, and worn down by the non-stop chaos of the past few weeks.
My brown eyes look hollow in the ambient light of the room. But beneath the bone-deep tiredness, I feel that strange, cold resolve settling deeper into my spine.
I know, with an absolute and sickening certainty, that finding Louise will not magically clean up this mess. It will not wipe the news reports; it will not repair the damaged business contracts, and it will not fix the deep, dangerous tension hanging over the Vassilis family.
My presence beside Orion has dragged me into a far wider, far more lethal conflict than I ever imagined when I was sitting in that locked room in his mansion.
Whether I like it or not, I am part of this world now. Every move I make carries consequences that go far beyond my own safety.
Once again, I am standing on the precipice.
The air around me feels thin, charged with a strange static that makes the skin on my arms prickle. Something fundamental is about to break, and I am walking straight toward it without a map or a light.
Confronting Louise is not going to give me a neat, peaceful ending. It is not going to grant me the soft closure I used to dream about when I was still a child.
It is simply going to force me to stand face-to-face with the child of the person who helped destroy my life, and force me to decide what kind of monster I am willing to become to survive the aftermath.
"Adrien," Orion’s voice calls softly from behind me, breaking through the terse silence of my thoughts.
I turn around slowly. He is standing by the open doorway, holding out a new wool coat for me. His expression is calm, unreadable, and terrifyingly patient, watching me as if he can read every single fear racing through my mind.
"The cars are ready," he says gently.
I take a slow, deep breath, forcing the air into my tight lungs. I walk across the room, slip my arms into the coat, and step out into the hallway beside him as Orion’s people prepare to move on the lake house.
