OutBreak Survival
Chapter 189: Akane, and Yugito’s acceptance. Esdeath’s defeat.
"Like Asia said, I'm trying to gather and protect people like you," you tell Tatsumaki, your voice carrying to all five. "But if you don't want to be here, you're not prisoners. Now-" You gesture toward the space between two of the floating women. "I'd ask you to move a bit away from the four, in case one of them decides the attacking-me option is appealing."
Tatsumaki's green eyes flicker with resentment, but she shuffles sideways without argument. Her ring glints on her finger. She positions herself between Emilia and Musashi, arms crossed, watching with sullen intensity.
You lower Akame to the deck. Her black hair pools around her shoulders, her red eyes tracking you with the focused stillness of someone who has spent years controlling every micro-expression. The Anchoring Band hovers toward her, spinning gently.
"Your stomach's been growling for the last two minutes," you observe.
A flicker of something crosses her face. Acknowledgment.
"The enchantment for sustenance keeps everyone properly fed and healthy," you explain. "But there's a mental aspect to eating that it can't replace. It's why I celebrated having the Heroes' Feast available." You gesture toward the laden table behind you. "Dispel Paralysis."
The spell releases. Akame's body relaxes incrementally. She remains kneeling for a moment, testing her limbs, then rises with fluid grace despite her malnourished frame. Her red eyes meet yours directly.
"Can you tell us what you experienced in this world?" you ask.
Her voice is quiet. Measured. "I joined a group that needed help. Survivors. There were... many of them. Children." Her jaw tightens. "It was going well. We cleared buildings, found supplies. Then they poisoned my food."
Silence in the galley. Mikasa's hand moves to her blade.
"Their leader feared me," Akame continues, her tone flat. "Said I was too dangerous to keep around but too valuable to release. So they sold me." She holds out Murasame sideways, the industrial lock-pins glinting against the dark scabbard. "They put me to sleep after that."
"We'll get the locks off now," you say, reaching for the pins. Your telekinesis find the first one and pull, it slides free with a metallic click. The second follows. The third. The scabbard's mechanical restraints fall away, clattering to the floor. "I'm sorry you experienced betrayal so quickly."
Akame looks at the freed blade in her hands. Her fingers wrap around the hilt with the familiarity of a limb returned. She doesn't draw it, doesn't need to. The weight of it in her grip is enough.
She just nods, taking the hovering ring from the air and putting it on. Then she moves to the Heroes' Feast table without another word, her torn Night Raid uniform hanging loose on her slender frame. She reaches for a plate with the deliberate focus of someone who has learned that food is never guaranteed.
Asia approaches quietly, setting a full plate of eggs, rice, and grilled fish beside Akame's reaching hand. The assassin glances up - brief, assessing - then nods again. She eats with mechanical efficiency at first, then slower, savoring.
Behind you, three women remain paralyzed and floating. Hancock's dark eyes burn with barely contained fury, her slave tunic hanging loose. Esdeath watches Akame's departure with ice-blue calculation, her gaze tracking the freed Murasame with predatory interest. Yugito's golden eyes have softened fractionally - watching how Akame was treated, how the food was offered without demand or condition.
Tatsumaki stands apart, arms crossed, her small frame rigid. She hasn't spoken since accepting the ring. Her green eyes dart between the remaining three, cataloging, calculating her own position in this unfamiliar hierarchy.
"Who's next?" Albedo asks from your shoulder, her gold eyes gleaming with quiet interest.
"Yugito," Answering Albedo without looking away from the three remaining women. "Esdeath is almost guaranteed to need a rougher approach, and Hancock is clearly pissed."
You lower Yugito's feet to the deck. Her blonde hair hangs in matted tangles around her face, her torn Cloud kunoichi wraps barely covering her athletic frame. Golden eyes watch you with feline intensity, her pupils narrowed to vertical slits despite the galley's bright lights.
"Yugito Nii," you say, floating the Anchoring Band toward her. "I'm about to release your paralysis, but before I do, I'll confess that among the current five, you're the one whose personality I understand the least. Simply because I've seen the least of you. So please ask questions before you resolve to attack us."
You dispel the paralysis.
Yugito's body relaxes. She doesn't move immediately - instead testing her limbs with the controlled precision of someone trained since childhood. Her golden eyes sweep the room once more, then settle on you.
"What do you mean," she says, her voice rough from disuse, "you've seen the least of me?"
Her question is direct. No posturing, no threats - just information gathering.
"The fact that you're asking that tells me you haven't spoken properly with any survivor groups since arriving here," you reply. "The worlds you are all from are famous here as both novels and television series. While you weren't one of the primary characters followed in the series, your name is recognizable to many fans."
Yugito's expression doesn't change, but her pupils dilate slightly.
"You were sold by name across the slave market," you continue. "Someone managed to combine your Cloud insignia, blonde hair, and non-G-cup breasts to conclude you are Yugito Nii, Matatabi's Jinchūriki."
A sound escapes her throat - somewhere between a laugh and a growl. "My chest size was a identifying feature."
"To exclude you from being Samui, the other beautiful pale blonde of Kumogakure."
"So you know what I carry," she says, her voice dropping lower. "The beast inside me."
"I know. She's suppressed right now, along with your advanced techniques. This world caps everyone from other universes at a lower tier of power."
Yugito's jaw tightens. "How long?"
"Unknown. Months at least, likely until the world catches up to your power. The enchantments on this ship have accelerated your recovery while you slept. Congratulations you get a clean bill of health."
"And the people who sold me?"
"Living in an airport as they try and get the world they lost to recover. If you want to kill them, I'll leave that to your choice."
She processes this in silence. Her golden eyes flick to Akame eating peacefully at the Heroes' Feast table. To Asia setting plates. To Tuka and Emilia standing together without fear. To the way the armed women around you don't point their weapons at anyone.
"The civilians," Yugito says. "They're not afraid of you."
"Why would they? They live here."
"And if I want to leave?"
"Same offer as everyone else. The door's there. Just the warning that outside is zombies, slavers, and no food."
Yugito reaches out and takes the Anchoring Band from the air. She slides it onto her finger with deliberate motion, her golden eyes never leaving yours. Then she walks past you toward the galley table, her bare feet silent on the metal deck.
She stops beside Yoruichi, who's lounging against the wall with her purple hair smoothed. The former Soul Reaper captain tilts her head, yellow eyes meeting golden ones with feline recognition.
"You smell like cat," Yoruichi observes with a grin.
"So do you," Yugito replies flatly, and sits.
You exhale slowly, rubbing the back of your neck as you regard the two remaining women floating an inch above the deck. Hancock's dark eyes burn with fury barely contained behind regal pride, her tattered slave tunic hanging loose on her frame. Esdeath watches you with ice-blue calculation, her lips curved in something predatory.
"Well, now I'm in a pinch," you say, half to yourself and half to the room. "I'm afraid of both of these two."
A few snorts from the gathered women. Mikasa's expression doesn't change, but her shoulders shift slightly.
"Hancock has understandable traumas which this situation isn't helping," you continue. "If I simply leave her sitting there for a week, would she get infinitely madder while we walk around her, or like a child's tantrum, would her anger simply disappear into angry pouting?" You gesture vaguely. "Esdeath is just as likely to attack me for leadership through combat as challenge you all for position as the alpha-female of the group." You shake your head. "This will be exhausting either way."
Albedo's wings rustle. "The answer to your first question is 'both.' She will become angrier AND pout."
"Helpful."
"Ladies," you announce, turning to face the semicircle of your gathered allies. "I've chosen the order of the first three and am certain they'll both be more eventful than the other three. Let's have a quick show of hands. Left hand for Hancock, right hand for Esdeath."
Hands rise immediately.
Left hands: Asia, Tuka, Emilia, Hinata, Kurumu, Riveria, Roxanne, Violet, Liza, Priestess.
Right hands: Albedo, Mikasa, Erza, Yoruichi, Musashi, Nami, Robin, Maria, Sinon, Rika.
"Huh," you say, counting. "That's... almost perfectly split."
"The gentle ones want the traumatized one first," Yoruichi observes from her seat beside Yugito, grinning. "The fighters want the predator."
"It's not that simple," Robin says, her right hand raised. "Hancock's petrification ability makes her more immediately dangerous if mishandled. Esdeath is said to respect strength. Hancock requires emotional navigation that could take hours."
"Hours we don't necessarily have," Albedo adds, her gold eyes gleaming. "Esdeath will test us. Once she determines you're stronger, she'll fall in line. Hancock's trust must be earned through demonstrated, a challenge that can't be done quickly."
"Ten to Ten," you mutter. "with another ten not voting." non-voted: Rin, Kurumi, Bulma, Nova, Rei, Shinobu, C.C., Tatsumaki, Akame, Yugito.
Akame speaks from the Heroes' Feast table, her mouth full of rice. "Do Esdeath." Her red eyes flick to the floating ice-user. "She's watching you calculate. She respects decisiveness. Hesitation reads as weakness to her."
Yugito nods beside Yoruichi. "The rags woman's pride will survive waiting. The ice one will not."
Tatsumaki's green eyes narrow from her position between Emilia and Musashi. She hasn't spoken, but her expression says clearly: I don't care, just get on with it.
Esdeath's ice-blue gaze hasn't left you. Her paralyzed lips are curved in that predatory almost-smile, and even frozen in place, there's something unsettling about the way her eyes track your every movement - patient, hungry, waiting to see what you'll do.
Hancock's dark eyes flick between the raised hands, processing the vote. Even paralyzed, you can see the moment she registers the split - the confusion that these people are debating how to approach her rather than simply doing whatever they please.
"Thank you for tipping the vote, Akame," you say, glancing back at the assassin who's still methodically working through her second plate of rice.
She doesn't respond. Just keeps eating.
You turn to Esdeath. Her ice-blue eyes lock onto yours with predatory intensity, even frozen in place. There's no fear there. No confusion. Just pure, calculating hunger.
"Esdeath, As per our group's already decided rules," you say, meeting that winter gaze without flinching, "if you attack without attempting conversation, your future will simply be my choice."
You pause, letting that settle. Then you lower her gently to the deck and dispel her paralysis.
Esdeath doesn't move immediately. She stands there, her torn white top and dark pants hanging loose on her athletic frame, ice-blue eyes sweeping the room once before returning to you. A slow smile spreads across her face.
"You're interesting," she says. Her voice is lower than you expected. Controlled. "You want to command me. Prove you're capable."
You hold up one hand, three fingers extended. "Then, you have three choices: First choice doesn't require a challenge. Accept my support and go wherever you want - land, your own ship, whatever doesn't bother us."- you lower one finger - " Second, a simple one-hit challenge. If you lose, you join our group without starting fights. If you win... there's not much to win that we're not already offering."- you lower one finger - " Third a victory challenge. If you lose, you accept a master-servant contract. If you win, you decide what actions we take as a group."
"What is a master-servant contract?" Esdeath asks, her head tilting.
Maria steps forward from the semicircle, smoothing her black dress. "A magically binding agreement between two people. The master gains abilities over the servant, Brad specifically gains certain abilities through the connection. The servant gains access to a system of power growth, sustained health, and protection." She gestures to herself, to Albedo, to the gathered women. "Several of us have the same contract willingly, without having challenged for it. It is not slavery as most know it - though the name is identical. It is a bond that strengthens both parties."
Esdeath's ice-blue eyes flick between the contracted women. She sees no chains. No collars - except Riveria's, which the long-eared woman wears with calm pride.
"Victory challenge," she says immediately.
You stand. Two more invisible barriers snap into existence between you - layered, overlapping, each one dense enough to stop a semi-truck. Your Observation Haki screams a warning the instant Albedo raises her hand.
"Begin."
Esdeath moves. She's fast - even reduced to Tier C, her body moves with the predatory grace of someone who hunted danger beasts in frozen wastes. An ice spear materializes in her hand mid-stride, crystallizing from moisture in the air, and she hurls it while closing the distance.
"Stun."
The spear punches through your first barrier. Cracks the second. Stops dead inside the third, suspended three feet from your face, crystalline shaft vibrating with residual force.
But you've already spoken.
The word barely leaves your lips. Esdeath's legs buckle mid-stride. Her momentum carries her forward and she hits the floor face-first, skidding across metal with a wet scrape, her body going limp as the spell locks every voluntary muscle.
She lies on her side, ice-blue eyes wide and unfocused, a thin trail of blood running from her nose where it struck the floor. Her fingers twitch involuntarily. The spear hangs in the air before you, frozen mid-flight, beautiful and lethal.
The galley is silent.
Tatsumaki's green eyes have gone wide. Yugito's golden pupils are dilated to full circles. Akame has stopped chewing, rice halfway to her mouth.
Albedo lowers her hand with a satisfied smile. "That was approximately one point three seconds."
Esdeath's eyes find yours from the floor. There's blood on her upper lip, smeared across her cheek. Her expression isn't angry.
It's fascinated.
You reach out and pluck the ice spear from the air, the crystalline shaft cold against your palm even through the barrier's residual shimmer. The three invisible walls dissolve as you carry it to the nearest table and set it down with a deliberate clink.
"That was much more dangerous than I'd like it to have been," you say, turning back to Esdeath's prone form. Blood still smears her upper lip and cheek. "If I didn't already have Telekinesis active to make those barriers, I wouldn't have had time to make any other defenses. While I could have survived and recovered from most injuries, if that spear managed to kill me outright, that would have been the end."
You cast "Hold Person." then release Stun, replaced by the gentler magical restraint that locks her body in place while leaving her conscious and capable of speech. Remaking the invisible barriers between you and doubling them.
Esdeath's ice-blue eyes track you. Her jaw works, testing the new constraint. "You're... telling me you nearly died?"
"Terrifyingly yes. I need to add more precautions." You crouch slightly, meeting her gaze. "Do you accept your loss and the master-servant contract that it entails?"
Silence stretches. Esdeath's pride wars visibly with the undeniable evidence of her defeat - the blood on her face, the spear sitting harmlessly on a table, the fact that she never came close to touching you. Her ice-blue eyes flick to the gathered women, few of whom show surprise and concern. This is normal to them.
"...I accept," she says finally. The words come through gritted teeth, but there's something underneath the reluctance that isn't anger. It's hunger of a different kind.
You release Hold Person. She rises slowly, deliberately, wiping the blood from her nose with the back of her hand. You pull an Anchoring Band from your pocket and hold it out.
Esdeath takes it. She turns the silver ring over in her fingers, examining the faint engravings, then glances at the identical bands on every wrist in the room. Her predator's assessment is swift and thorough.
"Everyone wears one," she observes.
"Many effects, which Asia will be putting in detail on the wall later." you confirm.
She slides it onto her finger without further hesitation. The metal warms to her skin.
Esdeath's gaze sweeps the room once more - cataloging threats, allies, positions. She moves not toward the combatants clustered around Albedo and Mikasa, but toward the Heroes' Feast table where Akame sits eating. She takes a seat across from the assassin without a word, reaching for a plate.
Akame doesn't look up from her rice. "The bread is better than it looks."
"..." She nods.
You settle back into your seat between Mikasa and Albedo, exhaling slowly. The adrenaline is fading, leaving a dull throb of awareness in your temples. You glance at the last remaining figure - Hancock, still paralyzed and floating, her dark eyes enormous with something that isn't quite fear anymore.
"Well," you say, letting a wry smile cross your face. "Now everyone stares at the last beautiful woman suspended in the middle of the room. Nothing weird about it at all."
A few chuckles ripple through the gathered women. Yoruichi's grin is widest. "At least she can't throw anything at you."
"I'm not convinced she won't develop telekinesis to do that for her, those eyes are scary mad right now."
Hancock's jaw tightens. Even paralyzed, her regal bearing is unmistakable - the way she holds her chin, the fire behind those dark eyes. But there's something else there now. Something calculating. She watched Esdeath charge and fail in under two seconds. She watched the ice-user accept defeat and sit down to eat bread.
Her gaze finds yours across the room. The fury is still there, but underneath it, you can see the question forming: What kind of place is this?
