The ambulance arrived quickly. Charles Reed was already unconscious and was wheeled straight into the emergency room.

At the doors, Annie York kept them company. She held onto Chloe Reed’s arm, her expression a mix of worry and complexity. Chloe slightly lowered her eyes, her small face devoid of any excess emotion.

Daniel Hayes paced back and forth nearby, looking extremely irritated. He felt the whole situation was just pure bad luck. He had thought Charles’s karma had finally caught up with him, but what was the result? The man simply wouldn’t die. Since Chloe was soft-hearted, she couldn’t possibly ignore him. He figured that perhaps this would be the only time she ever intervened in her life.

The surgery took quite a while—nearly three hours. When the doctor finally came out, Chloe forced the words out, "How... is... he?"

The doctor said, "We managed to save him. He has fractures in his leg and ribs, along with a severe concussion. He needs to be hospitalized for observation."

Chloe nodded. She asked Daniel to handle the admission procedures, and Charles was transferred to a regular ward.

The sky had turned completely pitch black.

Chloe stood by the hospital bed, looking at his unconscious, aged face. The emotions swirling in her heart were exceptionally complicated.

At that moment, Daniel returned. "I’ve hired a caregiver. Chloe, it’s getting late, so let’s head back first. With the caregiver keeping an eye on things here, there won’t be any problems."

"Okay." Chloe nodded. She turned and left the hospital.

Outside the hospital.

Annie said, "Chloe, my house isn’t far from here. I’ll just walk back."

Chloe typed out a message on her phone to reply: "Let us give you a ride. By the way, have you thought about what I told you before?"

Annie smiled slightly. "I have to have lunch with my mom tomorrow before I can come out."

"Alright, we’ll wait for you." Chloe put her phone away and pulled her straight into the car.

Annie was already very worried about her. She asked with concern, "Chloe, are you okay? Are you upset?"

Chloe lowered her eyes slightly and spoke, emphasizing every syllable, "I’m... fine."

Her disappointment in Charles and Autumn Linton had accumulated far too much. When something happened to them, she would feel a momentary daze and a fleeting sense of sadness, but she would not feel anything more than that. She had long since grown accustomed to facing problems on her own.

Annie held her hand, her expression heavy with worry. Chloe gave her a faint smile to show that she was fine.

After dropping Annie off at her home, she returned to Jardinelle.

When Fiona Linton saw her, she immediately asked, "Chloe, how is everything?"

Chloe typed out her reply on her phone: "Nothing major. I’m a bit tired, so I’m going to rest first."

"Okay, okay." Fiona nodded, a bit more concern in her eyes.

Chloe went back to her room, took a shower, and lay down. She fell asleep in no time. However, she slept very fitfully that night and woke up at five in the morning.

She kept her eyes open, staring out the window. For some unknown reason, a deep sense of sorrow kept building up in her heart. She knew perfectly well that she wouldn’t let things be like this anymore, yet she wondered why she simply couldn’t control these feelings.

Just then, there was a knock on the bedroom door.

Daniel’s voice came through. "Chloe, he’s awake, but something isn’t right with him."

Chloe got out of bed, changed her clothes, and walked out. Daniel’s expression was complicated. "The caregiver told me there seems to be a problem with his brain."

Confusion appeared on her face. She wondered what kind of problem there could be, and if he could have actually gone mad.

She and Daniel headed straight to the hospital.

Upon entering the ward, they saw Charles lying on the hospital bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. He kept muttering a single name over and over again. "Chloe, my daughter... Chloe..."
