Chapter 374 Auction
Chapter 374 Auction
Godfrey sat in his room, gazing at his phone. He had postponed going to see his parents for a week now and woke up this morning.
Although Godfrey had made up his mind to go see his parents, especially his mother, he just couldn’t get himself to go there.
Deep within his core, he was afraid her words would break him, that he wasn’t strong enough like Arthur to bear it all. He was afraid he would run away while his mother chased after him.
That pain, the despair she would feel from her child running away.
He was imprisoned by these thoughts, with the fear of the future, even when he had made up his mind to change it.
Unfortunately, that change had nothing to do with the fact that the mana tree was his mother and its objective would never change.
So now, this alert gave him something to look forward to. It diverted his attention from his parents, bringing life and positive expectations to his heart.
‘What am I going to do? I’ve never had this much money. It won’t take up to five million to get that orphanage into shape and that’s even too much.’
Godfrey left the bedroom for one of the small living rooms. He picked up a tablet, fell onto the sofa and began to browse.
It had been a while since he was here, browsing through the internet. After spending the past two years avoiding it so as not to be captured, he was finally back to scrolling through the net like every other human.
At least, even with the pain, strength gave him some advantages. He was certain of being able to at least fend off most attacks and survive lethal skills.
While browsing, he found an online auction. Its main item for today was an apple with an absurd price.
Twenty-five million!
‘Is this a joke?’ Godfrey tapped it and the description opened. ‘Recovery Apples? Three of them, and each could recover a decade’s worth of mana. All three of them meant three decades’ worth of mana.’
He squinted.
Mana was like fuel, it didn’t change when a Summoner grew stronger, rather the summoner’s consumption increased. Like they moved from homes to industrial factories. This growth required an immense amount of mana.
Of course, skills were the primary cause, they were like the gadgets in homes. At first, they were small and required little mana but later on, they became huge, requiring a massive amount of mana.
They could drain months or years’ worth of mana depending on the skill, especially against foes with higher points. Bridging the gap required more mana.
The body of a summoner had no limits to how much mana it could store but the problem lay in gathering that amount of mana. Meditation couldn’t sustain a life of constant battle.
Godfrey had three mana cores, each of them limitless like the human body, and they absorbed mana on their own while he had to absorb mana to store in his body.
This meant he had four times as much as any summoner but his summons had grown to surpass what he could gather.
Sustaining the Golden Order had its drawbacks and this was one of them. The Alchemist managed themselves with the Royal Apostles, who were literally bastions of mana, and they recharged fast, most likely because they were made from the mana tree’s sap.
And it could also be that those Apostles kept the Alchemist from going mana-depleted. They were also their protective barrier in some sort of way.
Godfrey stared at the apple. ‘That aside, mana absorption is a problem for every summoner. You could never absorb decades’ worth of mana in one day, not even in one or two years, and that’s without fighting for a single day. Doing that would stagnate your growth too.’
The mana jade in paradise usually had a few days to a month’s worth of mana, sometimes more, but that was it. There was also a quota for everyone due to the populace, which was why the cohort used it as mana recharge batteries on the battlefield.
All this made these apples even more tempting.
Godfrey sat up, entwined his fingers and read further.
‘I was wondering where they got it big. There’s a demigod plant summoner whose summon can produce this. They’re hot cakes, which must be why they kept their identity a secret. I would have gone after the person if I knew who it was.’
Now, three decades’ worth of mana would give him courage when the Ruination came. Right now, four of his summons had the strength of Titled gods, their mana consumption was immense, and two were progenitors.
It was already much. Without these apples, he would have to fight alone or restrict the skills his summons could use.
‘I have to buy it.’
Godfrey waited. What he was about to do wasn’t fair but he would do it anyway!
He watched the numbers grow and grow. Hours trickled by and when the final minute came, the price had settled at 69 million!
Godfrey had never felt so focused in all his life. He rubbed his forehead. This was an intense battle, a battle of the rich.
Here, money threw the blows and he might as well be a Low Tier trying to earn the rewards after the big guys slaughtered themselves.
Right at this moment, he placed his bid, increasing the amount from 69 million to 69.1 million.
But there was a soft close, as if the auction planners expected shrewd people like him. Time extended by a few minutes.
Godfrey almost collapsed.
Instantly, it shot to 70 million!
His breath trembled. He increased it to 70.05, it rose to 70.5!
‘Whoever is bidding against me must not have much money left.’
Godfrey increased it again to 70.55. His hands shook as time kept ticking until it finally closed and he received a notification.
He exhaled heavily, then looked at the second auction. It was the second apple.
Time for another battle. He had just become rich but from the looks of things, the arms of poverty were not too far away.
